Are 19 year olds permitted to drink alcohol on the ship? Thanks!

No but they can drink in the Caribbean islands!

We were just on the 4 night wonder with our 19 yr old DS. If DH bought drinks on deck and brought them over to the table and DS had one, no one seemed to care. However, in the dining room our servers could not serve him anthing alcoholic, even wine (they said it would be their job). It was even designated on his room key. It didn't bother him as he just likes a sip of wine now and then with dinner. He was perfectly happy with soda or water.

Is the US the only country that has 21 as a drinking age? So all the ports of call that are not part of the US have a drinking age or 18 or 19?

(Just wondering....I am WAY over 21--in fact, then I was 18 we could buy alcohol here, so I never had to deal with the 21 age limit).

Coming from a family with severe alcohol problems, I'd suggest that the 21 and up rule is for everyone's good. My father died young because his parents were fine with their children drinking from a young age -- he couldn't handle it, and I could fill pages of the devestating results for me, my siblings, my mother . . .

Don't forget that bodies aren't finished growing on the inside by 19 -- especially young men's bodies. A little bit of alcohol "on a special occasion" does send the message that it's okay, and suddenly -- even with the best of intentions -- a little can become a lot. You won't find a single person who set out to become like my father, but you'll find plenty of people who thought they could handle "just a little." It's playing with fire.

What's that old saying? If you wreck your body, where will you live?

I don't mean to offend anyone, but this is a subject that I've lived through -- painfully lived through. Consider it carefully.

A teenager's room key card will have NA in the bottom corner of it - No Alcohol! My daughter's a few months away from 21, and she could drink on the islands. A lot of the waiter's on board never even questioned her - some were adamant about seeing an ID...

Something I just thought of........my DD will be a few months shy of 18 when we cruise........will she be allowed in the clubs with me?

DCL states you must be 18 to go into the adult pool and clubs and Palo. I know in the kids clubs if you are a month or two shy of the stated age you can talk to the counselor and they can make an exception.

MrsPete....Having grown up w/ an alcoholic father myself, I know where you're coming from. Unfortunately, unless you have lived through it, most do not understand our concerns and think we're overreacting...at least that has been my experience.

tezb (and MrsPete) - you sure got that right...

My DD19 mentioned that DCL is very strict about carding young adults on the ship. She was allowed in the clubs but could not drink. On Grand Caymen and Cozumel only, she was allowed to drink if she wanted to.

I just returned fron a 5 day cruise on Serenade of the seas. Ages 18 to 21 could drink beer and wine, but you had to be 21+ for any "hard" liquor. However, I saw several drunk 18 year olds in the common areas such as the decks and pools, so I am sure they drank their share of the beer and wine the ship had to offer. I did not see any bad behavior and I did not notice any real rowdiness, so perhaps the parents were keeping tabs on their under 21 kids. I am glad Disney follows US laws, one less thing to worry about when my teens stay out later than I do!!
