18 year old in a hotel without parent

My DD was driving back from college (over several states) for the summer with her roommate. They stopped along the way at a motel we had made a reservation for them to stop at. They gave them a lot of grief about not being 21 - they thought they were from a local area trying to have a party.

After much convincing and showing the guy their college ID from another state!, and their car packed to the gills with all their stuff, they finally agreed to let them stay. ugh

They're going to be coming home again soon and the roommate is now 21, so hopefully they don't have any issues this time.

Our DD and a few friends wanted to go to Mexico for a grad trip and I just had a bad feeling about it especially since it was not long after the whole Natalie Holloway incident. I had said no and she was upset. I was so happy and relieved when she approached me about going to WDW instead. They had no problem booking a room at All Stars and they were 18. They had a blast!!!

In the Orlando airport she discovered her flight was oversold. She volunteered for a "bump", & was given a voucher for a hotel that night along with compensation for flying home the next day.

She took a van to the hotel, relaxed and swam, got herself dinner & breakfast then took the van back to airport for her 0630 flight home.

AND she remembered to tip the van driver. I asked.

I am really glad to read that in the case of a bump, or flight delay the airport hotels will let am underage teen check in with a voucher. I will rest easier now when one of my kids is travelling (it is hard to avoid connections with the cities they end up going between)

18-21 is a tough age...technically adult, but in most cases unable to rent a car, drink or rent a hotel room

I think a lot of it is because of financial liability issues. An 18 yr old is technically adult, so no longer under their parents financial responsibility (except where college student aid is concerned.) But if that 18-21 yr old trashes the hotel room with their friends, or crashes the car, and they are in college, meaning no job, who is going to pay for the damage to the room or the car?

The courts can make the 18 yr old responsible, maybe even map out a long term payment plan, but that's not going to help the hotel or car company recoup monies right away to fix/replace items. Times that by hundreds of 18 yr olds trashing rooms & cars, and those companies are really out of a lot of money to make immediate fixes.

She did mention she had to put her credit card "on file" when checking in. And she did have ID. My kids all were started with a credit card at age 15. Just exactly for this reason, in case they ended up flying alone and needed 'something'. ((Our family has always traveled a LOT))

BTW, the teen ALWAYS was responsible for paying her card in full each month. It was a very rare month if any charge showed up. I never had to remind to pay, either. I just kept a silent eye on things.

I opened up a checking account for my son a few years ago. It is linked to my account and I can see all of the activity online. I can add money as needed. He has a Visa debit card. It has come in handy for him while traveling because he didn't have to carry a lot of cash.

He just graduated from high school yesterday and is using his graduation money to open up an account in his name.

This is just so good to know!

DD has had a credit card for a couple of years now, and DS has one coming right now--because we also travel often. DD17 flies (alone) to the US and to many cities once there, on her own, at least once a year, as well as some travel in Europe. This fall she is also going to Australia on her own--so I like them having back up $$ in the form of a credit card just in case. I figure I do not travel without one, why should they?

Can an 18 year old stay in a room alone?

Most are okay at 18 but I do agree it would be best to call the hotel to confirm

Wow, I never even thought of this before.

My DD is only a freshman in high school now, but she's been saying that she'd love to go to WDW with her friends for spring break of senior year (using our DVC). It just occurred to me that her birthday is in the summer, so she'll be 17 during spring break.

I guess she'll either have to wait until the summer to go with her friends or we'll have to go with them for spring break and get two rooms.

As long as one of her friends I’d 18 she can go.

She could buy a car, a house, vote, join the armed forces and die in war.

So yes, she can stay at a hotel alone.

But not buy a beer. Or rent a car.
At least up here you cannot rent at car at that age.

I find it so bizarre that you can join the army but not buy a beer in the USA.

Hotel Gm here. Major brand. 21 and over for my brand. 11 hotels in my market and only one allows under 21 and that is one seedy old hotel you would not want your kids at.

Just the way it is for many of the reasons folks pointed out.

Lol, I’m thinking everyone that is almost 18 should be rounded up & placed in a holding pen somewhere until their 25!
Those ages are so weird, you are an adult, you can join the military, but can’t buy a drink-but you can have pot. You can get married, & you can have a baby or many babies but you need your mom & dad to check into a hotel or rent a car.
They want their freedom & independence but it would be super nice if you could have their laundry fluffed & folded on their bed by Friday. Also. can you make me my supper, “it tastes better when you make it mom”.
As the parent of this age group it is like living in the twilight zone sometimes, haha!

I keep telling my daughter an adult chaperone will have to be in the room with three girls. She says not.

With the kids being under 18, wouldn’t that be the case?

It was of course booked thru the school.

I am not positive about current policy, but I do believe that WDW has special rules for chaperoned group youth trips which allow for the kids to be in their own rooms. (even then, many hotels will allowed kids in seperate rooms from adults when in the same hotel--that is not the same as travelling and checking in all on their own)
I would be very surprised if any school trip placed ONE adult in a room with other unrelated kids----any orginization I have ever been a part of would not allow that. Generally, the adults are not allowed to sleep in the same room as the kids, and if it cannot be helped (scout troop renting out one large bunk house and no seperate room available) there must be multiple unrelated adults in the room.
