POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- A 200-pound python is now in custody after the snake turned up at a turnpike service plaza.

Jeff Harrod said he caught the 18-foot snake after chasing it for nearly a year. The snake was first spotted last year while state crews were cutting the grass around the Pompano Beach Service Plaza on Florida's Turnpike.

Since then, Harrod said he has been in a cat-and-mouse game to catch the snake.

Harrod will put the snake in his Vanishing Species Wildlife sanctuary in Davie. Harrod said the snake was probably an escaped pet.

Pythons are natives of China, the Malay Peninsula and the East Indies.

YOU KNOW WHAT THAT TURNPIKE IS LIKE-- ONCE YOU'RE ON IT YOU CAN'T GET OFF IT.......
