Yesterday we had to help our little Petey cross over the Rainbow Bridge. He was diabetic for the past 3.5 years. He lost his sight, lost his hearing. For the past few months we were seeing signs of dementia. On Saturday he ate his dinner and then about 3 hours later threw it all up, something he never did. The next day he refused to eat and without eating he couldn't have his insulin.
We took him to emergency and they told us that without a lot of testing they could not tell us what was wrong. We asked the vet if he was dying and his flippant response was "we are all dying" At that point we asked that they at least give him fluids and we would take him home and see out own vet the next day. Our vet saw him on Monday and felt he may have had a mini stroke. By then Petey was really out of it but we were not ready to give up. We took him home again, he still would not eat. We made the decision that if he did not eat by the next day we would put him to sleep and that is what we did.
We are sad but know that we did the right thing.
