Yesterday we had to help our little Petey cross over the Rainbow Bridge. He was diabetic for the past 3.5 years. He lost his sight, lost his hearing. For the past few months we were seeing signs of dementia. On Saturday he ate his dinner and then about 3 hours later threw it all up, something he never did. The next day he refused to eat and without eating he couldn't have his insulin.

We took him to emergency and they told us that without a lot of testing they could not tell us what was wrong. We asked the vet if he was dying and his flippant response was "we are all dying" At that point we asked that they at least give him fluids and we would take him home and see out own vet the next day. Our vet saw him on Monday and felt he may have had a mini stroke. By then Petey was really out of it but we were not ready to give up. We took him home again, he still would not eat. We made the decision that if he did not eat by the next day we would put him to sleep and that is what we did.

We are sad but know that we did the right thing.

I'm so sorry. We lost our dog last May, she was 15, and one of my very hardest days. I really miss her. She was our first 'kid' before our own kids and she thought she was my kids' second mom. 16 years is a great run and Petey was lucky to have you! You did the right thing. Sorry for this loss!!

I'm sorry, it's such a hard decision to make. We went through it a couple of years ago with our 17 year old kitty, and will soon face the same decision with his brother, who is 19.5. I am sorry that the emergency vet was so flippant with you- really unnecessary, and not at all helpful or soothing. You know that you did the right thing. I'm sorry for your loss.

You did the right thing, albeit so difficult to do. So sorry for your loss. Petey is in a better place.

Of course you did the right thing and I am so very sorry on the loss of Petey. Sounds like he was a wonderful pet. Your heart will be broken for awhile and that is because you loved each other so.

I am
So sorry to hear about your beloved Petey. We lost our jasmine kitty just a year ago today. She was 14. Maybe they met up on the rainbow bridge and are friends. It’s never an easy decision but you can just tell when it’s time. Take care

I am so sorry. Know that you made the right decision for your beloved family member Petey. It is so hard.

We recently lost our dog and it was said that dogs give you 5000 good days and 1 really bad one.

It sounds like you put a lot of thought into it and gave it time, etc. I agree he was one lucky boy to be so loved! FWIW, I think you did the right thing. I would not be seeing that vet again, what a dolt.

You did right, mrsstats.'s As P-n-M said above, you put a lot of thought into Petey's last days. You gave him 16 years of love, he gave you a lifetime of love back. And that ER vet, a total jerk for sure.

Know well, mrsstats, Petey will be there, at the Bridge, playing, waiting......

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.

Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge, together....

So very sorry. Another one of those hard things in life. Remember the good times and thank you for loving your dog with all your heart, thank you for the love and compassion you had for your sweet baby. Much love coming your way, God speed to you and your family during this hard time. Hugs

So sorry for the loss of your fur baby. He is now running free on the Rainbow Bridge, with all of the other departed DIS pets. In time, may happier memories of the years spent with him, replace some the sadness you feel in your heart today. He knew he was loved, and he loved in return, and I believe that is all we can ask of our pets. God Bless

I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanks for being there for him when he needed you most. :grouphug:

We had a diabetic dog many years ago. It's a commitment for sure.

So sorry for your loss. I had to do the same thing in 2018 for my 16 year old dog. They are such a part of our lives and, especially when you've had a pet for that long, their passing really leaves such a void.
