If she is flying with the family, then she won't need an ID. If she is flying alone, then go get her a state ID today.

When my dd15 flew alone earlier this year she had to show her state ID.

I wonder why she had to show ID. My kids 16 and 12 traveled alone last year and neither was ever asked for an ID card. Under 18 aren't expected to have ID.

OP, no worries. Have a great vacation.

She could go to your nearest driver licensing center and receive a State ID instantly. Have her birth certificate and social security card. I would do that and she will always have it. I think it may have been free or $10.

The one reason a request for ID when traveling may be the age to travel unattended. Just a thought

Not doubt people here have good opinions/advice, but why chance it? Call the airline or TSA

For our family vacation in June, DD *WAS* asked for ID at two different airports. Now, yes, we could have raised a stink about her being under 18, but she had just gotten her driver's permit and was eager to show it off.

In both cases, she also got a pink "card" that allowed her to keep her shoes on (like her younger brother and sister).

That's weird that she was both treated as an adult and as a 12 or under.

"Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel."

Obviously this is only in regards to domestic flights.

+1

TSA only requires ID for passengers 18 and over. Airlines ask for ID if you're flying on an age qualified fare including "lap baby". Makes sense an airline would also ask for ID to make sure the child is old enough to fly "as an adult" not subject to unaccompanied minor rules and fees.

Does she have a valid passport? That would also be available as a back-up.

She shouldn't need an ID, but if you want to be safe, that is an option.

Not instantly in my state (Indiana). They print off a paper one then you receive the real one via mail in about a week.

Since she is 16, the paper one will be fine. It will show she is under 18 and allow her the rights as a 16 year old with not needing the photo ID.
