15mo DS might be having seizures...

Okay, I'm a first time mom here and I'm freaking out...

Saturday morning I went into my 15mo DS's bedroom and got him out of his crib. Brought him into my room and nursed him like normal. When he finished he sat up and started playing with my husband. Then he jerked his head to the right, his eyes went up to the right and he jerked his head back and forth for 2-3 seconds.

DH and I looked at each other and shrugged it off. DS then did it 5 more times over the next 45 min. Each "episode" only lasted 2-3 seconds. He's awake and alert after he does it each time. Not once has he acted tired afterward.

I took him to the doctor yesterday because he's had a cold for the last week and a half and he had been rubbing his ears since Friday. Dr told me he had clear fluid behind his eardrums and there was nothing to do for his ears.

Did any of your children ever do anything like this when fluid was on their ear? It's not an ear infection.

The doctor wants to do an EEG before we head to the world on Dec 13th.

I just don't have any experience with ear problems, let alone seizures...

If you've had any experience, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

No experience, just a Our older dd had chronic ear infections, and wound up with 3 sets of tubes. But she always had gunky fluid behind her ears.

google febrial seizures it happens with a hi fever or change in temp that may lead you somewhere

like the PP said, it might be febrile seizures or he might be having Infantile spasms( a type of seizure), which are head jerks. they usually occur in clusters. watch out for them. His arms might tighten while he's having them so watch out for that too. If you want, video tape his "episodes" and show it to his pediatrician.

If you have a camera with video or a video camera, try to get the "seisure" on tape. That way they can determine what type it is, i guess different types, have different components and if they see it, they can help find the cause.

My cat a had a seizure, and well, i know you kind of freak a little, my kitty was head and body shaking, the only thing i was doing was trying to protect her head from wacking the ground. If there are 2 people there, maybe one can run for the camera, and the other watch out for the safety of the baby.
cat only had one seizure we were aware or, and we don't think she has had more.Of course we rushed her to the vet 24 hour hospital, cause she was spacy after it.

There are many types of seizure activity ranging from mild "staring" episodes to the more familiar tonic-clonic where the person jerks all over. An EEG is an excellent place to start. There is a possibility that the ears and possible seizure are related. I would suggest a visit to an Ears, Nose, Throat Specialist. If he is really having seizures there are many medications available now to help. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions. Karen

It could also be the ears....my DD11 has "bad" ears.....she has a mondini defect, otosclerosis and chronic trouble with fluid (in fact she will be having her 13th set of tubes on Dec 23rd!).....when she was your son's age she still was not walking, and would shake her head funny. She wasn't diagnosed with the ear trouble until 2, and they did not really diagnose the hearing loss until 5 (she now wears bilateral hearing aids). Turns out, the head shaking and delay in walking was because she was having really bad dizzy spells. She can tell us now- but obviously couldn't then!

If you can, keep a video camera nearby you all the time, and try and capture it on tape- demand a consult with a good ENT and a good neuro (or even better, a neuro-otologist who is both). Both seizures and ear disorders are probable issues- but the underlying causes and treatment are VERY different and could have very different outcomes.

Listen to your maternal instinct and push until you feel the issue is resolved. DD11 is our 4th and youngest child- and even then I let the Dr. talk me into thinking it was nothing. IF I only had listened to my maternal gut instinct and gotten treatment sooner, maybe DD wouldn't have so many issues today!

My daughter did this once and it scared me to death. I called 911. It winded up being her reaction to a spasm of pain.

She was really backed up with feces and she had a stomach spasm. The doctor put a thermometer in her rectum and that started the poopy flow and she was OK afterward. Not saying your childs incident is stomach related but it may be a spasm of pain that comes and goes from his ear.

Sending lots of hugs too! The EEG will certainly show if it's infantile spasms as it will be very characteristic. I would second the taping of the episodes if you can. I had a really smart mom tape it on her cell phone which she just happened to have. A picture is worth a thousand words. You could do this if your cell phone gets a good enough picture and you are more likely to have your cell phone with you than a video camera.
