I feel like a hoarder. Weeks of decluttering and packing and we are still nearly 3000 pounds OVER their estimate. I actually feel kind of ashamed. Wow.

I do knowingly have contents on the truck that will be tossed. A box of papers to be shred for example. Didn't have time to purchase a shredder.
And a set of dishes that will be donated. But hat isn't 3000 pounds.

Looks like unpacking will be an exercises in ruthless tossing.

No wonder this took an extra day from the moving company.

Wow! :scared1:

We moved into our first home a few months ago after renting places since college - we ended up renting a van and I thought that was excessive! :rotfl:

The worst part is moving stuff we knew we were going to get rid of sooner or later - most of our furniture is hand-me-downs from very generous relatives, but slowly we are buying our own pieces of furniture which meet our needs (and co-ordinate!).

I have a policy that if I've not used it in a year, I probably don't need it any more (within reason!).

I always hate moving because we always have tons of boxes that have been moving with us from house to house to house. We always purge a lot of stuff before each move but we still have too much stuff. We have stuff from 5 moves ago that have been following us for 10 years and haven't been opened since that first move.

Moving is always a great way to declutter and simplify. We used to move so much we were always there! But now that we haven't moved in a long time, we need to!

Best wishes to you and your family with your move~

I hope you had a binding estimate to to exceed!:scared1:

OP, do you have time NOW to declutter ... that way you won't be dragging all the stuff you are planning to throw out to the new home after just paying for it to get there? ... :confused3

I built my Boston home in 2005, had lived in our previous home for 15 years ... I ordered those huge dumpsters from my curb side trash hauler and threw everything out we were not using anymore ... made donations to goodwill and had many yard sales. When we got to our new home, everything coming off the moving van was STAYING. I was so glad to have decluttered BEFORE I arrived at the new abode. :thumbsup2

2 things I hate about purging.
1. Filling a landfill with perfectly good stuff (junk).
2. Finding a place to take all the perfectly good stuff off my hands.

Sorry you're dealing with all this on top of the stress of a move. I remember the feeling of just throwing stuff in boxes to get it out of the house. And yes, some of those boxes are still sitting in my basement, 6 years later. :rotfl:

You're inspiring me, though. I've decided that when the kids go back to school, I'm going to start dedicating an hour a day (or maybe one full day a week?) to PURGING, one room at a time.

You can sell ANYTHING on Craig's List or Freecycle.
Also here, if you take good usable stuff to the dump, you can put it in the "good condition" pile and people can take it away.

I'm inspired, too. We've been living in our house for 12 years, and we're definitely starting to collect "stuff." I'm taking the week of Labor Day off and plan to purge!

When we were getting ready to put our house on the market, the best piece of advice our realtor gave us was to rent a dumpster. A big one cost $300 for 2 weeks (smaller one half that)--they delivered it and picked it up after it was full. Great way to de-clutter--just chuck it in.
