I know he's going to think this is "too girly" for a 14 y/o but buy a facewash and wash his face before hand (something with a scrub in it)...it makes shaving better because it will get rid of some of the dead skin on his face before he shaves.

That might be something to ease him into though.

Butch up, Jersey! The kids got to drag one of those 3-stitch gash inducing single bladed disposable razors across his chin with a little old school foaming shaving cream like the rest of us guys and learn the hard way...you're taking it too easy on him!

Our DS14 just started shaving a few months ago right before he turned 14. Not daily, about every 2 - 3 days. My parents got him an electric rotary shaver (Norelco, I think).

I used an electric shaver from about 16 to about 32. Now I use a standard razor and shaving cream. I like the electric shaver for starting because there are less cuts to the face (usually just pimples being yanked off if a boy has acne) and less preparation required to use it. Just be sure to change the blades as indicated (usually 3 to 6 months -- check the owner's manual) -- it's no fun having your hairs RIPPED in two, nicer to have them cut in two.

Ducklite, is your son blonde/fair-haired? I swear I am fed up looking like a teenager at 29. I am the complete opposite of the apes described here, and still developing. Something tells me this is not quite right for my age.

My 14 year old received an electric razor for Christmas. I think my 18 year old started shaving around 14 too. He is like an ape though . He just started taking care to groom the unibrow. I told him he needs to trim the underarm hair next.

You are joking! Trimming underarm hair!

My DS as 15 and his arms and legs look hairier than me partly because he has very thick dark hair, he has been shaving every few days for some time, the hair is thicker under his chin than on it.

He's got medium brown hair, but a lot of what's on his face is still fine blonde fuzz. In the past year or so he's started to get some normal dark "whisker" growth, but not a whole lot. He doesn't mind not having it on most of his face, but I know he'd love to grow one of those little "dirt patches" on his chin. He can't because of his job though, so he might as well be happy for the lack of need to shave while it lasts.

DS is 21 and still gets carded going to an "R"-rated movie. He got carded at Sousa Family Cigars a few weeks ago when he tried to buy a pack of Romeo and Julietta's. You'll both be glad for looking younger when you hit middle age.

My husband has patches on his face that he never really got any beard on. He's got as much stubble on his face the next day as most guys do at 5:00 pm.

Hey I held back. I didn't describe his legs. He's a runner, let's just say he could probly trim 10 seconds off his time if he'd take care of the hair on his legs.

My friends son plays baseball (not professional) and all the guys (all 18-26) shave the hair off their arms and most shave their chests and trim their armpit hair! I am not sure about their legs. Hey just personal grooming, more people should do it!
I am fanatical about body hair, I can't stand it -and forget back hair, thats the deal breaker for me!

I keep getting told that because I'm medium/fair haired that the hair just doesn't show, but I have very little leg or arm hair; when you start going to Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon and see guys of 14 with more, it gets to you.

And, he sure hasn't been too happy with me about it either. lol But, with his upper lip looking 'dirty' all of the time and the under chin hair looking like he has the beginning of an Amish style beard....what does he expect?

Have you mentioned this to your doctor? It's probably just hereditary, but it could be a symptom of something more serious.

DS has hairy legs and "normal" hair on his arms and pits. It's just his face that seems to be taking it's time.

I wouldn't let it get to you though, "hairless" seems to be in these days.

Michael is 14 now??? Where does the time GO!? My DS Patrick was 14 and was growing a mustache, it was in patches and than he SHAVED!! Well, he is 24 now and has a "fade" and a chin tickler, you know, the stuff everyone has nicknames for...

awwww.. he's growing up.. I know the feeling.. my baby boy who is 13 is now taller than me too.. wears size 12 in mens shoes and his voice has changed.. I think Im starting to see some facial hair around the moustache area..

The sad thing is that 2 of my 3 kids are taller than me.. DD15 and DS13.. DD9 is catching up... the top of her head is at about my shoulders now.. it wont be long and she'll be taller than me.. and Im 5'5"..

Same here. My DS just turned 15 last week and I keep telling him to shave. Every morning I tell him to wash the "Gatorade Mustache" off, but its hair . He has very fine red hair and I swear it looks like he drank orange Gatorade. I think we'll go the electric shaver route.

I can accept the fact he will have to shave soon, but the drivers ed coming VERY SOON I can't accept. My baby driving

Ahh. I can sympathize with everyone. My DS is 14 and has pretty much a full beard this past year. He really didn't want to shave so I told him to try my eyebrow trimmer thing. (I know it has a name but it escapes me right now). He has used that to take care of the hair because it was bothering him too. He just left a bit on his chin like some of the baseball players have. So far this has worked out well but I know he will need to shave eventually. I just trimmed his eyebrows for him the other day because they were driving me nuts. My other DS is 12 and I don't think he will have the facial hair that his brother does plus he has maintained his very blonde hair. My oldest though has the beard and is about 5 feet 11 inches. We got asked for ID at the airport and at Sea World on our trip a couple of weeks ago and the cashier at Wal-Mart thought he was my husband and didn't believe that he was my 14yo DS! Time really flies doesn't it??

Wow, I hear ya The other morning I went in to wake up my son for school (he's 17) and I saw these manly, muscular hairy legs poking out from the covers I thought to myself.."when the hell did that happen????????" So fast, it seems like just yesterday I was cutting gum out of his hair He has been shaving hit and miss since age 14...he uses the Norelco cool skin .......I want my baby back Damn, thanks alot, now I'm depressed Just like the day my daughter got her first period, she was 12...when she went to bed that night, she was clutching a stuffed Eyeore These kids are growing up so fast, I blame the steriods in chicken

When I was 13 I was in Catholic school. I grew a beard. I grew it over Christmas vacation. When I came back I was told it wasn't allowed. They called my mom and told her. MY mom said "OK, if you can show me the rules that say it isn't allowed I will have him shave it". They said that they had no written policy, but they just didn't approve of it....

I kept it.

BTW, how can a school disappove of facial hair?

Yes, everyone who remembers the little 6yo kid who I wrote all those stories about, is 5feet 8 and a big MAN. There's very little about him that is a boy except the fact that he's still a "mama's boy"..

My problem is so many OLDER women come on to him.. We go to the supermarket and the checkout person totally ignores me and talks to him. He remembers the time we went to Best Buy and I screamed at the cashier "For the LOVE OF GOD, he's 13 years old!!!"

Last year some kids at his school asked if he was a TEACHER!!!

He has an amazing maturity, much more than MINE.. and it makes him seem much older than he is. The beard doesn't help...

Well, I think my problem is over.... for now.

I went to my neighborhood Publix for some groceries and asked if they sold razors. One of my friends there told me to try Magic Shave, a depilitory for Black males who get lots of razor bumps. He said it stinks but works great and will prevent him from getting the ingrown bumps AA men usually get when their beards grow back in.

The instructions tell me to test patch him first so I put a dollop right where his neck and face connect just in case. After 6 minutes I used a spatula to take it off (that's what they said to use!) and VOILA, he has a patch of NO HAIR there!!

The test patch is good for 36 hours so I'll try more areas on Tuesday.

He's happy, he sounded a bit sketchy about the razor ... and so was I!!
