.

When my girls were little, I remember them having a rash that coincided with a virus.

I have had two severe cases of hives in my life - one as an infant that almost killed me, and one when I was 16 and it lasted about 3 weeks! Neither time did I know what caused it.

My oldest DS has also had two severe cases of hives. His were more short lived, a few days, but his face swelled so badly with the hives that his eyes swelled shut. Some steroids took care of it for him.

My dd gets hives from nerves and when she gets sick. As long as there are no breathing problems it will be annoying for him.

I used to break out in hives over Christmas. Then I realized they started when we brought the tree in and went away when the Christmas tree got taken out. Now I take my allergy meds and I don't get them anymore.

I went through this about a month ago with DD6. It started on a Sunday with just a minor breakout. Over the next week, she continued to have breakouts about twice a day. The breakouts got progressively worse with Thursday being the worst day. On Thursday she looked like one big hive -- her whole face was completely red and the hives were on the bottoms of her feet and palms of her hand. I felt so bad for her!

We went to the doctor 2 times just to be sure it was viral. He said just keep giving her Benedryl and that I didn't have to wait until she broke out just give it to her every 6 hours as the label says.

Luckily, it only lasted a week and she hasn't had a breakout since.

This is fairly common but annoying. Do watch for any other problems. Swelling of lips/tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, any wheezing. Those are emergency situations.

Keep him cool and comfortable. Avoid tight restrictive clothing and things like tight waists that can increase itching. Baths with some baking soda in the water can be very soothing. Two TBSP will do. Aveno is okay but not neccessary. You can use cool compresses or ice packs to very itchy spots. Encourage him to press on the itches and not scratch. Keep up the benadryl.

He should avoid any pregnant women or infants just in case there is some contageous virus that is causing this. There are a number of viruses that cause rashes and a lot have names. Chickenpox, roseola, measles are a few. There are a lot we don't have names for as they are not occurring in outbreaks and have not been identified yet. Watch his comfort level and if anything worries you, get him seen right away.

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

I can totally sympathize w/ your DS. I've had hives three different times....twice from medication allergies (who know I was allergic to both penicillan and sulfa drugs). The third time I had hives it was for the first 6 months after I moved in w/ my gf. :rotfl2: I hope his hives don't last that long...but Benydryl is fabulous for the itch.

I hope he feels like raising the dickens again real soon.

Sorry your son is so sick. Yes, I've heard of this type of virus and we've had it. Those rashes/hives move around in a way it's almost eerie. Just keep up the benedryl for a day or so. No hot baths or showers as it increases or activates them. Fluids, rest, dress loosely and keep cool. Good luck. Btw, age is not a barrier. When my son got this one, I got it too. Wash your hands and stay clear as possible. Hard when you're trying to cure those viruses with tlc.

Has he been checked for strep? My kids often get a rash all over their bodies when they have strep.

I get hives at the drop of a hat. Could it be a food allergy? I got them once from coconut. I also get them from pollen, etc. in the air. I also get them with a fever.
