Hi all. My family and I just returned from our first DCL cruise. I thought I would share 13 thoughts about it. Your milage will vary, but here are some points:
1. It was amazing and worth the cost. My family of five, plus one, decided to go on the cruise towards the last minute. We booked 78 days out. We decided on the 5 night cruise on the Wonder with stops in Cozumel and Castaway Cay. The group was my wife, daughter age 13 (almost 14), daughter 8, and daughter and her friend both age 11. We booked two 9B cabins on the 2nd Deck right near the midship elevators. For the girls, it was their first cruise. My wife and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise for our Honeymoon 16 years ago. We have 4 previous Disney World vacations. While everyone agreed that either vacation was still an option, our family broke down the vote on which you would rather as follows: DW, DD13 and DD8 would take the cruise. DD 11 and I both slightly prefer the parks. DD11 and I are both “on the go” types and love changes to each day. The other 3 all are more “relaxed”. That being said, I will cruise Disney again.

2. Don’t miss the sunrise. I am an early riser and woke each day between 5:30 and 5:45. Watching the ship come alive in the morning was fun. Nothing beats a quiet walk around the fourth deck as the sun is rising.

3. The size of the Wonder was perfect. I was worried about how crowded the ship would “feel”. It never really felt crowded. We always were able to find at least 3 lounge chairs together. We had the late dinner seating, so we found prime seats for the shows on each night even though we only arrived 10 minutes early. For the pirate deck party, I arrived 30 minutes early and secured a prime spot on the 10th deck overlooking the Goofy pool with a great view of the show and fireworks. Castaway was great as it clearly is designed to accommodate many more than the Wonder could hold.

4. Be careful about what cabin you book. My biggest regret was that we did not book further in advance to give us a better cabin selection. We had cabins 2060 and 2062, right next to edge and the elevators. Edge was extremely loud as the tweens were constantly right outside our rooms until after midnight. More concerning on the noise was that the music from the lobby was very, very loud. In addition, we thought, incorrectly, that we would have one queen and two twins (the convertible couch and the pull down berth). Neither cabin had the pull down. Despite research which suggested we did and our travel agents belief that we did, we did not. The ship was full and they could not switch us. Not a big deal, but I did end up on the twin as the two 11 year olds shared the queen. That being said, I slept fine.

5. The design of the rooms more than made up for the lack of space. I was shocked at how well Disney has designed the storage in the cabins. We had plenty of space to unpack and store our belongings. The split bathrooms really worked well. Why the Disney hotels do not copy the bed heights to allow for storage of suitcases under the bed, I don’t know.

6. The food is good and at times great. I like a good meal. I enjoyed each meal. I have two extremely picky eaters and both were more than satisfied. My wife, who is not an adventurous eater, thought the food was good, but she did not try anything that would challenge her palate.

7. The dining room team is something else! Our server (Sinisa) and assistant server (Tita) were unbelievable. Sinisa would have two recommendations each night. I listened and he was spot on each night. But Tita, took things to another level. My girls literally wept while hugging her goodbye. She had a brain teaser for them every night, and seemed truly engaged in asking about their day. The two of them will be what we remember the most.

8. Take a drink class (or two or three). The best value on the ship (if you are a drinker) is the various tasting classes. I took three: mixology, martinis and whisky. I learned a lot and tried things I would never consider. In addition, I made some great friends who randomly bought drinks throughout the cruise!!

9. The kids clubs were great. Heed the advice to send your kids on day one. My girls made friends that will last past the cruise. Vibe was an amazing experience for my oldest. She had enough freedom to feel “grown up” but was supervised in a way where she did not feel it but I was comfortable.

10. Finally, Palo is overrated. From reading this board, this might be blasphemy, but I was not blown away. We did brunch and while the food was good, I found it stuffy. I am no stranger to five star restaurants, and it is not the level, not even close. The service in the main dining rooms was just as good and for the upcharge, ($90 for the two of us, 30 a person plus 30 dollar tip), it was not worth it.

11. Arrive at the port early. We arrived just after 10:00. We received boarding group 3. We were able to have almost a full day and avoided much of the crowds. This was despite a port arrival time of 1:30. No one ever asked what our arrival time was supposed to be.

12. Don’t be afraid to book your own excursions. We had originally planned to do the DCL Beach break in Cozumel. The price was high. After researching, we canceled that excursion and planned a day at Paradise Beach on our own. For literally half the cost of the DCL excursion, we had a great day that was better than the families that did the DCL excursion.

13. Be nice to the staff. While I pride myself on the fact that I think I have instilled manners in my kids and we do this without expecting anything, we found that the staff repaid kindness in many ways. We were chosen family of the cruise by three different departments: housekeeping, room service and guest services. We were shocked to find a note in our cabin saying that room service had chosen us family of the cruise. We would return to our cabin to find treats (chocolate covered strawberries, cupcakes, cheese plates. . .) at various times without being asked. Housekeeping left us 6 arcade cards. Guest Services sent us a note and three lithographs. When we asked our server how we were chosen, we were told that each department can chose families based on the interactions. The only things we did were simple. We said thank you and we talked with everyone about them, not us. What a lesson for my kids. Treat people with kindness and respect and it is paid back in ways you will never anticipate.

Happy to answer any questions. . .

Thank you so much for posting! One of my biggest questions is about Palo and Self-Excursions!

We are Golden cruisers and your comments are spot on!! We are so glad that your kids were appreciated for their kindnesses!! Hope to meet you all on the Wonder, Aloha, Karen

Great thoughts about your vacation. Thanks so much for writing them up! In addition to wishing Disney hotel rooms would allow under bed storage, if they could add a room dividing curtain, that would be most welcome as well!

Because of your post, I have a fancy new dress and shoes, and no where to wear them. :rotfl: :rotfl:

DH asked me to "kindly cancel" Palo brunch. We aren't "foodies", and he feels the money will be a waste. We've never cruised before, so we will be experiencing EVERYTHING that is already paid for with "new-ness". I won't mind eating at Cabanas or the MDR during breakfast, lunch and dinner personally.

I really appreciate your feedback! We are the April 30 Fantasy and were booked into the Palo brunch for our second sea day, I was on the fence about it and now I know it is not for us :) It is our first DCL cruise and we were feeling pressure like it would not be complete without Palo brunch....while in my head I knew that just wasn't the case! You have confirmed that for me :)

FWIW, the almond croissants are pretty much worth the cost of the brunch ALONE. If I ever cruise Disney again and I do brunch again, I'll likely just eat those and ignore everything else. They are THAT good.

We love the brunch as well and look forward to experience each time. I dont feel brunch is Palo is supposed to be supreme in service above what we experience in the dining room but the food selections are much different than what is offered in the dining rooms. The hot items are prepared fresh to order and we love the grape/gorgonzola pizza, chicken parm, and eggs benedicts. It is definitely not for everyone but it is most definitely for me.

I am also curious how a 1:30 pm port arrival time got a boarding group 3?? normally concierge is 1 and platinums would be 2. Boarding group 3 would be for 10:30 PATs.

I am not sure how we ended up with Boarding group 3. We arrived at the port, dropped our luggage off with a Porter, listened to him tell us where to lineup, were about 25 people back from the closed doors and followed the crowd. Like I said, no one ever inquired about what our Port Arrival Time was. We just went through the line and did what they said.

We are gold and request a 10:30 PAT, we get boarding group 2. Seems like we also got boarding group 2 when we were Silver with a 10:30 PAT (also using Disney transportation, in case that made any difference).

Glad you had a great time and couldn't agree more with comment number 2! I love getting up in the morning and watching the sunrise while enjoying my coffee. Once on the Fantasy, I was up in Satellite Falls waking up and someone called us over to the very front of the ship so we could see a school of dolphins escorting us into Cozumel, it was amazing!

I'm glad you enjoyed your cruise. Your number 9 point is so true. My kids still talk daily to kids they met over two years ago. Also appreciated your number 12 comment. We haven't been to Paradise beach, but we have been to Mr Sanchos and Chankanaab. I always encourage people to step away from the DCL excursions. There are so many better options that won't cost hundreds of dollars. I love exploring cities on my own.

Great tips for other newbies! We only have 2 cruises under our belts so are still "new" as well. We LOVED Palo dinner (which we did on a Tues), but were not equally impressed with the brunch (did on a Thurs). Would not hesitate to book the dinner again (was well worth the $$ IMO), but would pass on the brunch at the same price!

I agree with most of the OP's views but I would make a couple comments.

I love Palo Brunch. It's my favorite meal on the ship. In fact, we'll be there on Sunday. The view is fantastic and the service is great. Different strokes, I guess.

On the subject of booking your own excursion, it can be a hot topic on these boards, but I have seen enough YouTube videos of people missing or almost missing the ship that for piece of mind, I'll gladly pay extra and book through DCL, especially in a foreign country. It's kinda like flying in the day of your cruise, there is never a problem until there is a problem. Again, a matter of personal preference.

Your port arrival time suggestion may not work out so well for the Fantasy or Dream. With the Wonder and Magic, the terminal is much less crowded. I've heard stories of people arriving early for the newer ships and then having to wait a significant amount of time.

Completely agree on Palo. We did it for dinner, and while good, wouldn't book it again. I have way better ways to spend $100 onboard.

I agree with you on the view from Palo. That was a highlight, and there was something to be said for it being adults only. I can also understand why people like it. I wasn't intending to put down anyone who enjoys it. Like you said, different strokes.

I also find your point about the different ships on Port Arrival Time interesting. Not being experienced, I wonder if it is the ship or the port? We sailed out of Miami, might that have been the difference?

Lastly on the shore excursions. The way we handled it was to make sure we left at a time that we had plenty of time to spare. We had to be on the ship at 5:45. We left Paradise beach at 3:00. We had made sure that there would be taxi's available ahead of time. Missing the boat was easily my biggest concern!!
