13 Things a Newbie Cruiser Learned

THANK YOU. This is just the sort of thing I was looking for. It helps me have more open eyes when looking at booking and saving for the trip.

Question on the room service. I was under the impression that it is free. Am I incorrect? Your post seems to indicate otherwise.
Room service for most things is included in the cruise fare. Those items that cost extra on room service are sodas, snack foods (chips, nuts), and wine & beverage packages (including bottled water). And, of course, the gratuity.

I've been toying with a DCL and one thing that really keeps me from it is not really knowing what the 'additional expenses' will be. I know the ticket covers room and board and use of many of the facilities. But how else do they 'get you?' The DCL website is frustratingly vague about all of that. What is free and what isn't?
Here is what is not included:
-tips (average is $12 per guest per day - that gets split up between your stateroom attendant and your server, assistant server and head server in the main dining rooms)
-alcohol (but you can bring 2 bottles of wine/champagne or 6 beers on board per person and it is free to drink them in your room)
-specialty restaurants (Palo is $30 per person plus tip and Remy (only on Dream and Fantasy) is $85 per person plus tip)
-movie theatre style snacks by the theaters on the ship
-spa
-Bibbiddi Bobbiddi Boo boutique
-excursions
-tips for room service
-certain items on room service menu
-in room gifts
-tips for luggage porters at port
-souvenirs in gift shop

I think I got everything. Everything else is included in the price you pay to board!

Forgot to say parking! Parking at the port and transportation to/from the port is not included.

Something to remember...if you book through certain travel agents they will award you an On Board Credit which helps defray some of the "additional" costs.

I was scrambling around this New Years Eve cruise to spend all of mine. Now THAT is a fun "job." :)

PS Don't worry, I managed ;)

We just returned from our first cruise and found it to be a learning experience too. One thing I wasn't too sure about was the gratuities: Is standard "enough"? Or do servers/hosts expect more?

Is the auto gratuity enough or should I tip on top (for regular service)?

How much is a "good" tip for room service? We ordered milk, cookies and mickey bars and since the amount was $0... I was at a loss for what to tip.

Other than a few coffees at the cove cafe and a few drinks of the day, we didn't spend much at all once on the ship.

The suggested gratuities are enough. If you feel the service was above and beyond, you can tip additionally. But you don't HAVE to.

Room service - typically $1.00 per item up to $5.00ish for a full meal.

FWIW, the almond croissants are pretty much worth the cost of the brunch ALONE. If I ever cruise Disney again and I do brunch again, I'll likely just eat those and ignore everything else. They are THAT good.

Don't forget the Sticky Buns! And the Strawberry Soup! And...sorry, I get carried away - we were just there a few days ago :) I LOVE Palo's brunch, it's a highlight every time we go! And it's nice to sit down for a quiet meal with no kids at all. The only minor complaint I've ever had is on the Magic/Wonder, where we had a view out the window (more than once) of those who have just left the pool, think they've found a deserted area of the deck to enjoy, and pick their wedgies, or other such items that are better off done unseen... :P It'd be great if that outside deck wasn't accessible, or didn't exist, but I'm sure others will disagree - c'est la vie!

Thank you for this post! I'm so excited for our cruise in July!!

I just got off the Fantasy on Saturday and I would like to amend my earlier statement regarding brunch at Palo. The new way they do it now with the extra CMs standing around and basically insisting walking next to you and serving you from the buffet is (to me, at least) extremely annoying and ruins the whole atmosphere. It turns something that used to be very relaxed dining into a chore. If this is the new norm, I have eaten my last Palo brunch. Dinner there was fantastic as always, but the brunch is now so totally different I didn't find it pleasant at all. :(

I think this is only due to the recent outbreak on the Wonder. We were on the Wonder just before this happened, and no one followed us around or served us at Palo's. However, from what I've read, after the outbreak all four ships upped their precautionary measures, at least temporarily. I'm sorry to hear that it ruined the experience for you, but I would not expect it to be something that they leave in place permanently either.

Because of your post, I have a fancy new dress and shoes, and no where to wear them. :rotfl: :rotfl:

DH asked me to "kindly cancel" Palo brunch. We aren't "foodies", and he feels the money will be a waste. We've never cruised before, so we will be experiencing EVERYTHING that is already paid for with "new-ness". I won't mind eating at Cabanas or the MDR during breakfast, lunch and dinner personally.
Don't cancel! Just try it! This is one of our favorite things to do. Obviously your choice but it's one of my favorite things to do on the ship.

Thanks OP for your great review! I love the Wonder!

Thanks so much for sharing. We are taking our son and daughter, their spouses and 5 grandkids on the Caribbean cruise in a few weeks. I'm so excited, but a little nervous about all the logistics.

7. The dining room team is something else! Our server (Sinisa) and assistant server (Tita) were unbelievable. Sinisa would have two recommendations each night. I listened and he was spot on each night. But Tita, took things to another level. My girls literally wept while hugging her goodbye. She had a brain teaser for them every night, and seemed truly engaged in asking about their day. The two of them will be what we remember the most.

8. Take a drink class (or two or three). The best value on the ship (if you are a drinker) is the various tasting classes. I took three: mixology, martinis and whisky. I learned a lot and tried things I would never consider. In addition, I made some great friends who randomly bought drinks throughout the cruise!!

9. The kids clubs were great. Heed the advice to send your kids on day one. My girls made friends that will last past the cruise. Vibe was an amazing experience for my oldest. She had enough freedom to feel “grown up” but was supervised in a way where she did not feel it but I was comfortable.

10. Finally, Palo is overrated. From reading this board, this might be blasphemy, but I was not blown away. We did brunch and while the food was good, I found it stuffy. I am no stranger to five star restaurants, and it is not the level, not even close. The service in the main dining rooms was just as good and for the upcharge, ($90 for the two of us, 30 a person plus 30 dollar tip), it was not worth it.

11. Arrive at the port early. We arrived just after 10:00. We received boarding group 3. We were able to have almost a full day and avoided much of the crowds. This was despite a port arrival time of 1:30. No one ever asked what our arrival time was supposed to be.

12. Don’t be afraid to book your own excursions. We had originally planned to do the DCL Beach break in Cozumel. The price was high. After researching, we canceled that excursion and planned a day at Paradise Beach on our own. For literally half the cost of the DCL excursion, we had a great day that was better than the families that did the DCL excursion.

13. Be nice to the staff. While I pride myself on the fact that I think I have instilled manners in my kids and we do this without expecting anything, we found that the staff repaid kindness in many ways. We were chosen family of the cruise by three different departments: housekeeping, room service and guest services. We were shocked to find a note in our cabin saying that room service had chosen us family of the cruise. We would return to our cabin to find treats (chocolate covered strawberries, cupcakes, cheese plates. . .) at various times without being asked. Housekeeping left us 6 arcade cards. Guest Services sent us a note and three lithographs. When we asked our server how we were chosen, we were told that each department can chose families based on the interactions. The only things we did were simple. We said thank you and we talked with everyone about them, not us. What a lesson for my kids. Treat people with kindness and respect and it is paid back in ways you will never anticipate.

Happy to answer any questions. . .

#4 Wow 2060 wasnt good. Not sure what your budget was, but we would never have a room that low.

#10 You have to be kidding me. Palo is NOT over rated. I'm not the biggest fan of the new menu, but, when the kitchen staff makes you your own dinner off the old menu, just for you.... PLEASE.
If you think the food is the same you really have no clue. They have lobster ravioli in the main dining rooms, to compare them would be like saying my local football high school football team can play with the NE Patriots. Just saying...

Thank you so much for posting! One of my biggest questions is about Palo and Self-Excursions!
Do not base Palo based on this review......

I have been to many 5 star restaurants and Michelin rated ones, Palo can stand with them..... Its not good, they are Great

I think others have said this...

The brush is NOT for foodies.... Actually the dinner isnt either, although there are some dishes that could be considered. Now Remy on the other hand.....
