Try the humane traps they sell at Petsmart.

We live in an old farm house and deal with mice every year. My fat cats haven't been helping much lately :rotfl2:

We've done traps in the past but I refuse to unload them and my DH is traveling more so that's not really an option for us this year.

So we're trying poisen and it's really cut down on our population. Problem here is sometimes you get a mouse who didn't go outside to die and it smells. You also have to put the poisen where the cats and dogs can't get to it.

Good luck!

Hey. I was watching my three sleeping neices, in sister inlaw's van yesterday. While she ran in for a few groceries. I kept hearing noises but thought nothing. When sister inlaw returned she said "oh yeh there is a mouse in here, see all the shredded paper" EEEKK.

If you go with the trap option, try this method for baiting. Use crunchy peanut butter and bait it on the bottom of the bait holder. It works everytime and kills quick and clean.

The only problem with the humane traps is that the mouse are usually too smart for it.
C.Ann - I think my parents' used the mouse house. I'll check with my Dad.

DD has 2 cats, but they have both been declawed and when they saw a mouse running by in the garage they basically just sat there looking bored..

Declawing doesn't make a difference. Check this article out:

We also have a pest control company come to place poison in special traps inside the house (for any that get past Dingle) It's some special poison that they eat and then do everything they can do to get back outside in search of water (apparently however it works makes them VERY thirsty) You DON'T want a poison that straight out kills them or you'll have dead mice smell everywhere!!! :)

I guess poison is out of the question because of the cats and the dog, so we'll have to go the trap route..

Not necessarily. Our poison is placed (by the pest company) in special containers so cats and dogs would not have access. Other poison "sticks" are put in the basement between studs or thrown into the crawl space that no other animal would have access to.

We threw them away. If you find the mouse before it dies, you will have a pee and poop filled trap with a live mouse that does not want to leave. And then you have another mouse who knows how to enter the house and probably will again.

DECON is the trick. Get the cubes that fit into the small plastic boxes with a key needed to open them. This keeps the cats and kids out but the holes let the mice in. When they eat it they get thirsty and leave the home to find water. They die outside. Once the mice smell death they tend to stay away.

We live in the country and keep the mice out with Decon.

When we lived in the country we had them in our garage. Poison worked, but like others have said if they die inside they stink it up.
And even if you kill, them others will find the hole they came in and you will continue to have mice problems. Really, wherever they have access needs to be patched so they don't have access.

Good point. Must deny them access. Read somewhere that mice can get into a hole that has the diameter of a DIME!!!! Yikes...that's tiny!

Actually, even smaller then that. When we had a mouse a couple months ago I was researching. Everything I read said the size of a pencil.

CAnn, I think I would call pest control. I wouldnt worry about offending your son in law. Mice are gross, and if he's not going to deal with it, have it done professionaly.

Peanut butter is good. A quick rap on their little heads with a hammer works if the trap doesn't kill them.

We had a de-clawed cat when I was young. It brought us "presents" of dead mice on occasion.
