12-yr-old B-day at Universal, special dinner or dessert ideas

My son turns 12 our first day at Universal (flying into MCO the night before and staying at an airport hotel). He's spent quite a few birthdays away from home -- the perks/downsides of having a spring break birthday -- so he is pretty flexible about what a "birthday celebration" looks like.

I've looked at the in-room celebration options for RPR and they are all too expensive or aimed at grown-ups. I am thinking a fun restaurant experience or bakery treat for the 5 of us to share. No character meals (2 teen sisters with us too).

So far the best idea I've had was sharing some great desserts at Toothsome in CityWalk.

Any great ideas or experiences? I know we will get a birthday button when we check in to RPR that morning.

Thanks,

You might want to look into the new Chocolate Emporium. They have some awesome looking treats!

Is he a HP fan? The ice cream at Florean Fortescue's shop is incredible - and I'm picky about ice cream! That and an interactive wand could make a great birthday for a 12-year-old HP fan.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think Toothsome Chocolate Emporium may be a winner for us. We do love our desserts!

I imagine we will end up at the ice cream shop at some point. DS has already told us he wants to find a Golden Snitch for a souvenir so I am hoping they have one in the parks!

My guy's bday hits Memorial Day weekend twice in a row every few years. No one ever wants to do a party then so we hit the road. :)

My 12 year old was VERY disappointed that a milkshake was impossible at toothsome when we were there during soft opening (the waits were horribly long then and there was an issue with dinner vs shake ordering). So he would love a shake on a birthday there.

Call and have the notation your son will be celebrating his birthday on your reservation
If you do not receive a bd button when you check in, ask for one

If front desk is out of the buttons, ask at guest services for it

Wear the button in the park as sometimes TM acknowledges it with maybe a treat
