I posted this on the Restaurant board, but thought you guys may be able to help as well.

My niece turns 12 the day we arrive. We do not plan to visit the parks until the following day, but would like to do something special to celebrate her birthday. We were thinking Whispering Canyon, but would like to know if anyone could suggest something else. We don't mind paying for a character meal, but don't want to pay a lot of money for bad food just because the characters are there. What would you do? It will be a party of four. Myself, my 16 month old daughter, my sister and my 12 year old niece.

Kids usually like Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Cafe.

Probably the safest thing would be to come up with a list of options and let her choose. They're hard to predict at that age and it might be something you'd never expect. One of my teens was nuts for Sweet Tomatoes, for instance.

The first night we arrive, we usually go to Downtown Disney and walk around/shop. Get there early and do dinner at Rainforest Cafe or Planet Hollywood. Both are fun and very laid back. Personally, I like RFC better because of the atmosphere. After a good dinner, you can walk around and enjoy DTD.
