12/09/06 Geeks.... Lost, but not forgotten

John1, Dennis and I are on facebook. It can be a bit overwhelming in the time it takes to look at all the "gifts" and "requests to join groups or causes", but it can be useful. I located a friend that dated my brother in high school and then Dennis and I reaquainted with her in the 1980's. We had lost track of her about 15 years ago. She is living near Phoenix, but unfortunately I found her after we passed thru Phoenix so we did not get to see her.....next trip though! :thumbsup2

Wise move.

The "kids" who friended me are my brother's former students who are in college now and have really helped him with his illness. Just a few kids who spent a lot of time with our family when we were in distress and thought he would not survive. Several of them have now worked seasonal jobs that I hired them for. Nice kids all, but interesting to say the least to see their comments sometimes.

I understand. I am talking about current students. Uh...nah!!!!!

I am a bit confused with the whole friend thing. I accepted you as friends, but what does that mean now?

Me too!

I pretty much ignore all that silly stuff - poking, kidnapping, peeps, etc. - too much to keep up with. I've found that I have a little time to keep up with the friends I have and share some laughs. It kind of takes place of a current cruise thread - if we were going on one. I have found some old friends too, like a woman I went to school with all through Jr. High and High School who is now a nurse in Connecticut.

I understand. I am talking about current students. Uh...nah!!!!!

I knew that!

Ok everybody . . . Geek talk, so non-gadget geeks beware!

I have to tell you guys about my latest gadget that I just love - my Kindle.

If any of you are readers - and I mean more than just a book or two a year, it is well worth it.

The Kindle is an electronic book reader from Amazon.com, and they have over 250,000 books you can buy. You buy them right on the device, wirelessly - there is no monthly charge, and the books are delivered right to your Kindle within a minute. While it is a bit pricey at around $350, you buy Best Sellers for $9.99, and other books for less. It can store up to 1,500 books that you can carry around with you all the time!

Amy and I read a lot, so we got them for each other as an early anniversary present when the new model of the kindle came out.

Seeing that we are Geeks, I just had to share.

One thing . . . the "cover" you can buy for it from Amazon is just a plain black cover, and we carry these things around with us just about everywhere now - like going to dinner, etc.. I told Amy we look like we are going to be knocking on doors witnessing.

I will have to look into that more...not for me but for William. I am buying the kids books all the time for AR. He is gunning for 100 points just in the 3rd 9 weeks alone! He will be past 200 for the year...no way of knowing how many he will end with. We have so many but I am always trying to find him more interesting books to give him a nice selection. Do you think this is something that would be good for kids too? I am going to have to check out the listings available for that level.

That sounds awesome. I love to read too. Pre kids....over summer break, I would read about a hundred books....now....not near that!!!! It really does sound awesome. Cool gift!

You would really need to look at the content available. There are kids books, but I haven't looked too closely. I did buy Sophia a book that she could read on her ipod touch - there is a Kindle App now for the iPhone/iPod touch. The touch is not as easy to read on as the Kindle, but OK for Sophia.

My biggest concern about a kid having a Kindle would be that once it is registered, it is tied to your Amazon account, and all you have to do to buy a book is push a button. You would have to have a talk about proper use.

But check it out, if William is mature enough, it might be OK.

I looked some of it up last night and it does not seem to be as big of a bargain for kid's books. Many of the ones he has been reading are also 9.99 or close to it. With the book sales and the monthly book club sheets they send home I have been able to get them for much less. Also, they can be passed down to K once he has read them. Whe he gets to be a bit older, high school maybe this will be a better deal for him. :) I wish that I had enough time to read like I used to. He inherited my love of reading though for sure. This morning he is taking an AR test that will put him at 100 points for his AR...for the 3rd 9 weeks alone! I know that program is hit or miss with kids...it definitely misses DD but she loves reading too and we encourage her not to let the scores stop her from reading challening books...just don't test on them. This has been great for him though because he has set goals for himself this year and he is so proud of himself for sticking to it and exceeding what he expected that he could do. I hope that he can use this lesson learned in other projects. :)

I think everything is becoming social now. Pretty soon we will have the DISfacebook.

I just spent the night over there at Facebook. Still trying to get the hang of it. Sophia is at her aunt's for Spring Break.

Any of the rest of you on Facebook? Lots of us Geeks over there too, and the DIS has a page too.

I am on Facebook and find it to be pretty cool. :surfweb:I even found my sister after 15 years of looking for her everywhere on Facebook! :worship: I am on a couple of the groups like DIS and DCL.

You lost your sister for 15 years....holy moly! I am so glad you found her!!!!:goodvibes

OK, has everybody just been busy the last few days, or what?

Work has been crazy here.

But I did get to add a new ticker to my signature yesterday morning. I was hoping for AKV conc, but instead we are staying at BLT, DM is excited. We visited the models in Feb and we liked them, and now we get to stay on the monorail for the very first time, woo hoo!

I keep checking for posts too! :) I have been pulling 80 hour weeks getting ready for spring break so that I can cut back next week and only work 5-6 hour nights and not lose my scheduling priority. I am looking forward to sleeping in next week most of all...hopefully the kids will too!

Let us know what you think of the bacon/lettuce/tomato PJ. It does seem like steep points to stay there though . . .

We are doing four nights from Sunday to Thursday morning, then hitting the Wonder for the Bounce Back offer, so a four nights BLT (60) and 3 day cruise, over the weekend (46) for a grand total of 106, not bad for a DVC week, lol. Will take photos of the room. I hope that the DVC observation deck is something we will be able to take advantage of one evening to see the fireworks.

Ps The BLTs we had for dinner, were great, how did you know? ;)

What a beautiful day it finally is here in between days of rain. It's a bit windy but 78 in the house and sunny at the moment with clear skies. :) I am very excited because my efforts have kept working and as of this morning...93 days into the new year I have lost 16.6 pounds and am now in my "old jeans" with plenty of room!!!!!! I still have another 5.4 points until I reach my goal but am very happy already. :) I am to the point where I have to make myself eat during the day because with drinking more water I am simply not very hungry some days. Since Jan 1 I have not had any soda/caffeine, no sweets besides the Weightwater ice creams or chocolate cake (and one slice of Angie's apple pie at WDW)...just Special K products, more fruit and lots more vegies than I ever ate before. We still have pizza on Friday nights but I stop with two pieces now.

:) Oh I will! I am NOT going back!!! Once I started to really see the results I just got more determined. Who knows what I will end up at because I don't really see myself changing how I am eating now. I guess I have new habits and just can't eat as much as I used to. Not eating after 7 pm is a big part of it I am sure. I WILL wear a swim suit this year...not shorts and a tank...when we go to the beach. On last year's cruise I wore one on CC the last day of the cruise and one other day when I went in the adult pool but that was it and it wasn't for very long.
