I would be annoyed too Patsy. Does she have more than one teacher now? Even in DD's new school, they were talking about being absent in general and they have one day for each day absent to make up work. They also have a new "ZERO" policy. It is the teachers avoiding giving students a zero for anything. If they don't have their homework, they have to stay after school to finish it. It's new and they aren't sure how it is going to work. I think the concept is to get them to do their homework so they don't have to stay after and to not get them discouraged if they happen to forget something and have a big zero to average into their grade.
If it's an excused absence (sick, death in family, page in legislature, etc) she gets day for day to make up the work. If it's unexcused (hookey, vacation, Mom forgot to get a Dr Note) she gets 1 day to turn in homework.
I like the zero policy. It sounds like your school board is on the side of the kids instead trying to just control them.

Maybe I am just cynical...but the kids that do thier homework will continue to do their homework. The kids that don't do their homework....will stay after school and do it. I am not saying that is a bad thing...but the kids who don't do their HW are usually the kids with no one at home. No one will miss them not being there and if they are forced to stay after...then that is just extra free babysitting time for the parents. Again, I am cynical after a few years in the system. Some parents will work any angle they can.

They also have a homework club after school (as well as one just for math help). They say a lot of kids utilize this so they don't have to bring it home with them. Plus there is a homework hotline that you can call to get that night's homework. Let's see, we can also access their grades online where we can see their test scores, classwork/homework grades, etc and if they are behind on anything. They really are trying to get the parents involved.

That is very unfair! I have to say that the district where I live and the one where I work are wonderful about these kinds of things. The one where I work has many many poor familys and most do not travel at all...so it really isn't an issue. The one where I live has alot of the wealthier people in our county who do travel alot. They district is accustomed to school year travel.
We have a lot of "transient" and ESOL families who don't bother to send their kids to school. The point it to get these families to keep their kids in school where they can enjoy some benefits of education. (Not be garbagemen and maids all their lives) But, I think there should be some breathing room!

They see that Brandi, but they are more or less targeting the kids who do their homework, but have have forgotten it at home or something to that effect. Nothing will get the kids who just don't care to do it or to do it right. KWIM?

Does this mean that you haven't watched the show yet, Kristina? :confused3

No PJ said her affiliate showed next weeks show for some reason.

I'm wondering if she's confusing it with the premier.

But if it truly is next weeks show i don't want to hear any spoilers....

With that in might it might actually help my DD who can't keep her brain on her work!

And the teachers are 0% cooperative about pulling together homework beforehand. If they have it ready they will give it to her before we leave we will get it, if not then we get it when we get home. Then she will have 1 school day to turn it in after we get back.

Patsy, I can relate to this one. Although we are given a whopping 3 days!

That makes sense. That way if a straight A student forgets or loses their assignment they get a chance to do it with out the zero. That is a great idea.

I thought that maybe she thought the season recap was the new one and the premier was "next weeks." I was a little confused myself. I also do not want a spoiler!

Hi Everybody. We booked this cruise when onboard in 12/04 but I just started looking at the boards.

My husband and I (age 41/42) will be cruising with our 6 year old daughter (first grade). Do any of you have girls that age that will be onboard?

Thanks,
Shelley
Shelley, welcome. Lots of kids in this group!

OK, I'm done mouthing off about our school system for now. It's 2:30 and time to go run errands
1 Get a haircut
2 Pick up DH's suit
3 Fabric Store

I just wanted to bring Shelley back around to the current page because we have buried her with all the school talk. If I miss anything good, someone PM me. I'll be busy praying for the homeless and visiting the sick tonight and tomorrow.

Exactly! Students don't have to get so discouraged for being human sometimes!

Eliza was up crying last night and I am so tired today. I actually have both of them sleeping right now....I think I am going to go and rest for a few min. before my DH gets home from work.

I'll catch you later. If you go to chat tonight will someone please post the link. THANKS GUYS!

Oh yeah...I picked up my once muddy formal dress from the cleaners today....$16.50.
