Don't think it'll be free. I think they'll charge you the full fare price for that.

Don is correct. SW charges you the difference between your fare and the walk up fare (full fare) to fly change to an earlier flight. They basically have no standby status.

You will occasionally get a gate agent who will bend the rules, but it's never happened to me and I wouldn't count on it or arrive early thinking it will happen.
