100 Million Dollar Mistake

Yeah I understand exactly what you are saying. Of corse thehave tove restricions. No I felt bad for the girl because her hair touched the bar, but wasn't allowed to ride. Well it was brought up that the kids enjoyed it so therefore I said they were getting "screwed" not being able to ride the attraction if kids enjoy the ride more. Man I would never want little kids getting hurt so I completely understand. You know I really can't explain this ride, it just has too many issues in my opinion.

Height restrictions are there for a reason and are generally set by the manufacturer of the ride, not Disney.

Since this isn't an off the shelf "manufactured" ride, it was Imagineered by Disney, the height restrictions would have been researched and set by Disney. (and I too agree that they are there for a valid reason)

Yeah I agree too. Plus Disney really is kid friendly with their rides. I wouldn't think about taking kids to Universal because to them the rides are scary. I am sure disney explores all options.

I'm really glad that you hate it that much. I really love it and without you in the line that will be one less person in front of me. I make sure every time that I'm in EPCOT I get on it at least 2 times. I'm glad that they finally added such a great and thrilling attraction at the park.

Test Track is good but MS is great.

Hey if you like I guess that is all that matters. In your eyes, Disney made a good move. Exact opposite for me. I think there will be different opinions running through the board once this hype dies out because this is one of those rides that will become old extremely fast (in my opinion). Here is a good idea, go to your local carnival, pay 5 bucks and ride the gravitron as much a you want. Much cheaper and get the same experience. I really think this is what the ride is. I guess for those who like it I am glad you do because it makes your Epcot experience even better, but Disney needs to raise the bar in my opinion.

Well, not to defend Disney, especially since I haven't been on M:S.

However, then,

1. Why go to Haunted Mansion? pay 5 bucks and ride the Haunted House as much as you want. Much cheaper and get the same experience.

2. Why go to Space Mountain? pay 5 bucks and ride a generic roller coaster as much as you want. Much cheaper and get the same experience.

3. Why go watch Wishes? for free you can watch the 4th of July fireworks. Much cheaper and get the same experience.

4. Why buy a Mercedes? for much less you can ride a Chevette. Much cheaper and get the same experience.

5. Why go for Cindy's breakfast? for much less you can have the same food.

The above attitude made me missed all the rides I wanted to participate the last time I went to Disney (about 15 years ago) and my parents keep saying "why ride (insert a Disney ride here), it's just like (insert an equivalent ride here) at (insert a park name here)".

It's the little differences that makes all the difference in the world.

Thank you for this thread, though, it freshens the memory of my disappointment when my parents told me not to go to certain rides just because it resembles another kind of ride.

Something that won't happen to my daughter this time around.

peace out!

My grandson 10yrs rode ms when we were there in july and loved it. We had a blast playing the games and sending video post cards home.

I rode MS for the first time last week. I had heard so many rumors, that the first time I rode I was very nervous. I think there was so much hype about people getting sick that that was all I focused on the first time. I hadn't really given myself the chance to enjoy the ride.

I rode the next day without having to worry about getting sick, and all I can say is I love it. The most intense ride experience I have ever had. I only wish it had been longer because it was incredibly unique. I think you have to immerse yourself in the ride experience to appreciate it fully. We all know you are not actually launching into space, being slingshot around the moon or landing on Mars, but if you allow your imagination to work a little, you will feel as if you are for a brief moment. There are lots of rides at WDW that wouldn't be as great if you didn't immerse yourself in the experience. I think that is one of the things that makes WDW so magical.

Well put FatCow and followme2disney

Suspend your belief and rational sides and enjoy the experience and let the imagination loose

I agree with you Fatcow....

You pay for the Disney Experience, which includes many things, not just one ride. I myself did not pay the ticket price just to ride MS. Although I loved the ride because I too let my imagination set in and for a moment I was in a space shuttle. Disney is for those with imaginations and for those who don't have them then yes, go to the carnival! I mean, you ride Small world for a disney experience, but to those that are comparing, it would be no different than a boat ride on a lake. Disney is for the kid at heart and those with an imagination at hand. Besides the gravitron does not have the screen, the buttons and joystick nor the title, it just spins you around. Nothing to think about on that ride! If you can't open your mind and imagination, don't go to Disney as you will not enjoy it!

Trust me you are preaching to the wrong choir. I have a wonderful imagination, that is something my friends and family can easily say about me. I just guess that this ride doesn't get me in the mood for my imagination to run loose. I went on it yesterday because I was there on Christmas Day. This was my second time on it, it just didn't thrill me. There is just something missing about that ride. It is short and we all agree there. I did agree the gravity is neat, but it lost me on the weightlessness. I didn't feel like I was floating. The Astroid Field is the like Star Tours when you are trapped in the glaciers in outer space. I don't know what is the purpose of the mission to mars because they land on a runway so obvious there are humans living on there so why are we important for there mission. Are we suppose to be ginni pigs for the new space shuttle. I wish the buttons and joysticks actually worked because then you could control your ending. See that would be truly unique, original, etc. That would be the Disney touch.

dogg2727, valid point - some control over the ending would be a Disney Touch - I am not sure what that would look like or if it is possible given that I think there are 6 or 8 (?) pods on the ride

Good Point and Idea

Dogg,

I think we get it now...You HATE M:S. So don't go on it anymore.

Can we please move on to something else now?

Well now we are having a Disney Discussion on what you would like to see change about this ride. What could they add and make it better. You know if I were Michael Isner, I would have this site saved on my favorites. If he could see the truth about what customers think, them we would be getting somewhere. I know what you are saying about the 8 pods connected to each other, but I don't think that matters because all the pods have to worry about is spinning together at the right part of the video. All our controls would do are moving the individual vechicle, therefore, not effecting the others. The spinning only is there to give you those boosters from the rockets and you don't use those in the landing sequence so I think that would work.

Wonder if they thought of that but then were scared off/concerned that what the Engineer does might freak out the Commander or something similar - i.e. 4 people each able to do something different on the ride - maybe that would have been too much of a surprise factor for the other pod occupants

I do not think dogg2727 hates the ride - if he did, I think he would not even bother investing his/her time in this thread - I am always up for an open discussion on Disney

thanks

Well, the good thing about Disney is that there is always something for everyone. dogg 2727 hates MS, but loves TT. I, on the other hand, and underwhelmed by TT, but find MS to be very well done. To each his own.

As far as being able to change the ending of MS...perhaps that is something that will come along. Remember, TOT used to only have one drop, and now there are 6 drop sequences, all different, and all containing multiple drops. Perhaps MS will evolve similarly, with, say, the Commander, being able to choose from one of several different ending scenarios which all in his/her "pod" would then experience.

One never knows what the Imagineers will dream up...

Oh sure there was hype. Lots of hype. That's the PR folks doing their job. Despite the massive buildup, when DH and I tried this in September, neither one of us were disappointed. In fact, we were blown away. Once the ride was over, we jumped right back in line.

Throughout the entire first ride I couldn't shut up about how much I was loving the experience. I KNEW the other riders didn't want to hear me rant on, but I couldn't believe how intense and real the simulation was. In fact, I don't think classifying it as a "simulation" really does it any justice.

I am a coaster freak, and I will ride anything for a thrill. But, for me, nothing that I have ever ridden compares to M:S. Hands down it is the best attraction I have ever been on.

I do like the idea of controlling the ride with our joysticks and such, but I don't know how four differently moving joysticks (with 9 other pods around the centrifuge) could work logistically. We all have to be experiencing the same motion.

I am not sure it would even be possible for us to control our own ending. There are 4 people in a pod and 6 or so pods per ride, I don't see how that would be possible, although it is a good idea! I don't disagree that the ending kinda sucks. But I also understand disney tries to limit ride times so everyone gets the opportunity to ride. I was just hoping for a return back to earth. Oh well. If they had built it like horizons then we could have been involved in our own ending but I think it being so realistic would have been lacking. Maybe someday they will be able to do something like that!

Well no one has lied yet about the ride, it is stupid, it is boring, it is pointless, and it is a waste of a ride.

I take that as him saying that he HATED the ride. Maybe I'm wrong.

Well he he :hyper: when you um kinda take out that itsy bitsy teenie tiny quote it does look a little harsh. I haven't been on the boards in 2 days but I read all your posts and I think that Princess nailed 1/2 of the problem. It needs to go back to Earth. How much better would that be. We want to feel what the astronauts go through in space, why can't we go back. Picture this, you start going back right. Disney can make it where you enter the surface and then "We are coming in fast, the Earth's surface is burning up the ship." Then you can feel the vessel getting really warm. Then, "You are coming in fast, easy, easy..." Big splash into the water and you see fish and stuff. Then pop back to the surface and walla. How cool would that be. It would be a wonderful touch. As for controlling your own ship, see only one of the four (say commander) can control the joystick. The engineer will repair all the crashes the commander makes, the navigator with press buttons to stabalize the ship and give it an auto pilot. I don't know, be creative. See the 4 vechicles attached only are important for spinning in sync. When you are landing, none of that spinning/jet boosters matters because YOU ARE LANDING. So I think it would work fine, right?
