My wife and I are staying concierge in a couple of weeks on the Fantasy. I believe we are entitled to the smallest of the internet packages. We really do not plan on using the internet except for maybe a few e-mails just to check in with family back home. I don't see why it shouldn't, but does iMessage work on the ship and if so, does it eat up a lot of MB or is it a pretty efficient way to communicate while out at sea? :confused3

TIA! :thumbsup2

We were in concierge and we had IPhones it does work and the Internet is fast but it can eat into it, chop and stop various actions on your IPhone, Ie The cloud snd your photo Sharing via your photo stream, and auto updates on Apps and IOS updates.

Agreed, be sure to turn off "Settings > General > Background App Refresh" and "Settings > Privacy > Location Services" for a quick win (you can obviously fine-tune if you want any of that going on.

iMessage will work as it uses an Internet/Data connection. SMS will need a cellular connection.

I had problems with that, I knew pre cruises to do it, but I was DUI g my cell phone to post live on my blog during the cruise, for blogger you need to have roaming on so I switched it on off ship and forgot a few times on the ship.

All the photos on my IPhone streamed via ICloud to my IPad but thst then took up my Internet package, my cell phone allowance was fine but on DCL the uploading took a lot of the DCL allowance as it was a good fast connection and working in the background.

It worked perfectly for me. I turned off everything so no background refreshing or uploading would happen. I only turn wifi on when i wanted to call the family. It worked so well that we used both Facetime Voice and Video calling on a 5 day cruise and had data left over. That is with one video call of at least 25 minutes. Once we figured out video didn't really eat up the package, we showed the family the port and other cruise ships at Cancun, showed them Castaway Cay (from the ship, no wifi on the island) and spent a long time chatting in our cabin one night.

If I had needed to add time, it wasn't ridiculously expensive to buy another package.

I would guess that retrieiving email and sending might eat a lot because you have no idea what might be coming in. For me, i would be hacked to waste my data on the junk that comes on my personal and work email.

If you just need to stay in touch with family who don't all have iProducts, check out other text and VOIP apps that will work with Android and such.

Another one to turn off is "Settings > iTunes & App Store > Updates" in the Automatic Downloads section. That one bit me on our last sailing. Chewed through 50MB downloading new releases of Apps I had on my phone before I realized where it all went.

But, yes iMessage works. Seemed to have much more delay/latency for message delivery, though.

I think I also set all my e-mail accounts to "Manual Fetch" as opposed to "Push" just in case.

I just get the big 1gb plan and monitored my consumption until the last day. The worst mistake was updating my iPad apps which went through 300mb. Ouch.

Just made it through 1gb in a week, instead of one day. Use airplane mode when you are not checking for emails. Only turn on the wifi when you need to check emails. This maximized my plan.

If you have a laptop... watch out for Patch Tuesday!

I refuse to use Internet other ships, but have no problems with DCL's quantity based plans. I also got myself a port SIM card to further extend my ship wifi.

My dh owns his own business so he needs to keep in touch in case of emergencies. What would be the best way for him to do so? He has an iPhone 5. I'll be bringing my phone but plan to put it in airplane mode during the cruise along with the iPads.

Check his current cellular statement to see how much he averages each month. Then factor in how much wifi he uses at home.

For myself, I just got the 1gb plan. If I burnout mid cruise, just get another one.

I wonder if his work will cover his communication costs if he's so valuable.

Recently on my 12 night cruise I got through two large packages, it's very fast and you need as said to turn off background updates, Apps, etc. you get an email when you use 25%, 50%, 75%, and near end.

Each time you log on and log off your use is shown.

My IPhone, automatically connected after the first time log in, but I had to log in on my IPad.

You said you went through 2 large packages. Was this after you turned off background app dates? How many minutes a day did you use it on average?

I was uploading a lot of photos see my link below to the live thread and trip report.

However my don also got through two large packages. He didn't upload to a blog.

This was a 12 night cruise.

The Internet is very fast, i.e. to upload photos but does eat your allowance fast.

I had one European Internet package all the cruise for my cell phone, half the size and didn't run out on that.

Thank you so much. I hope to get thru 14 nights with just one large package.

My husband is the CEO/president/main shareholder but it's a very small company. We will be paying for the data. It's not like working for a big firm where you just write an expense report and send it to HR.

I am wondering if they changed something because we stayed concierge on the dream this past Jan and I didn't even use any of the free data because I found the internet so PAINFULLY slow.

Since 2012 I have found the. Fantasy, Wonder, and Magic very fast on the Internet, never a slow minute , hour, or day.

Some devices however on older frequencies can sometimes not communicate correctly over the. WiFi channels.

I cannot speak for the Dream as I have never been on thst ship, but the technology on the Fantasy for 14 nights was fantastic.

I have uploaded photos in volume and they flicked through in seconds.

Sometimes an issue is another user or users near you on the same frequency at the same time clogging up the signal.

It was a new iPhone so not sure why it wasn't working well. Hmm. Thank you :)

Yes, IPhone shouldn't have any issue at all it is very compatible, we have used them and! IPads on all of the other three ships.

Most people who have cruised recently report far better service.
