We will be seeing the orthopedic doc tomorrow. This is our first trip. What will he absolutely NOT be able to ride. He is in tears...

Well in my opinion (probably not as good as an orthopedic doctor's.. haha), he probably won't be able to ride man jerky rides such as RNR, EE, SM, Dinosaur, BTMRR, TT, etc.

Other rides i'm not really sure of would be TOT, Splash Mountain, and M:S.

If I missed any, just let me know.

First off, I am so sorry to hear that. I hope he feels better. As for rides, he probably will not be able to ride anything rough like roller coasters.

First of all,I hope he feels better!:)

Second of all,he probblywwont be able to ride anything that has really fast motion that makes you move your head such as"DINOSAUR,BTRM,Primeval Whirl,RNRC,he might not be able to ride Test Track, and I think that might be it nbut probably not.

I hope he feels better! And I hopeyou guys do have a fun disney world trip! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

How sad for your DS...but please tell him there are many things he will still be able to do. Of course your doc will make the final call, but just thinking off-hand of MK, other than the "Mountain" rides(Space, Splash and Thunder) I would think he would be able to handle most of the other rides. Rides like Buzz Lightyear, Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan's Flight, Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Haunted Mansion...and so many others I would imagine he would hardly miss the ones he can't ride!!!

Please tell him we wish him a speedy recovery...and focus on what he CAN do, rather than what he cannot :thumbsup2

I'm so sorry, we have 10 days until our trip too, I just can't imagine how you all must feel right now. :grouphug:

Oh, Im sorry. Hope he's ok.

the rides that he shouldn't ride are:

-Space Mountain (bumpy and fast roller coaster ride)
-Splash Mountain (big and fast drop at end)
-Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (bumpy roller coaster ride)
-Stitch's Great Escape (show, but you have a restraint going over you which may be uncomfortable)
-The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm (fast roller coaster ride)
-Think about Astro Orbiter. Its like a dumbo but its higher and faster. Ask cast member.
-Mission: Space (definitly not the orange team. green team think about) Ask cast member.
-Test Track (really fast)
-Body Wars, think about. Its a simulation ride. Kinda shaky.
-Rock N' Roller Coaster (big no no. super fast and goes through loops)
-Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (another big no no. free-fall ride that drops you from high up to down a few times. real fast)
-Primeval Whirl (roller coaster ride that spins and drops and is kind of fast)
-Think about Star Tours. Its a simulation. I really believe that it will be okay. I would ask a cast member though.
-Dinosaur (fast and bumpy ride)
-Expedition: Everest (roller coaster ride real fast and drops. goes backwards too)
-Kali River Rapids (bumby and wet white-water raft ride.

that should be about it. hope your son feels better!

Be careful of Pirates, it does have that small drop, small but it could still jolt him a bit.

some of the slower rides he probably can't ride because at the end of the ride they have the tendacy to get bumped by other boats. some of the sloer rides are also bumpy and jerky too.

I'm so sorry, I feel so bad for your son. But the good thing is you are going to Disney world, and that is one of the few theme parks where someone with a borken collar bone can still do plenty with all of the shows, tamer rides and attractions. I hope your doctor has some good news and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful, and memorable trip!!

I toured Disney World with a broken neck and will always have limitations. Here are the attractions he will have to avoid somewhat.

Epcot - Test Track but he can go through the preshow with you and just not do that actual ride which will give him more time in the gift shop.

He should probably do the Green Team on Mission:Space which is non-spinning. Everyone can do this with him and it's just the same as the spinning Orange Side.

Animal Kingdom - There's a lot here, unfortunately. Kali River Rapids. But he can shoot everyone with the elephant heads. Expedition Everest. But he can watch everyone from the waiting area to the right of the entrance. Primevil Whirl. But he can play the carnival games while waiting. Dinosaur. But he can go through the preshow with you and not ride at the end. The Safari. But he can see the animals on the two walking trials.

MGM - Rock and Roller Coaster. But he can go through the preshow with you and not ride at the end which will give him more time in the gift shop. Twilight Zone. But he can go through the presow with you and take the Express Elevator at the end which will give him time to see everyone's reactions as the get off the ride. My favorite new thing to do and the preshow is the best part of the attraction anyway.

Magic Kingdom - all three mountains. But (say it with me now) he can go through everything with you and just not ride at the end. The TeaCups. But he can see how green everyone is when they get off.

The thing is, yes he has an injury but there's ways to still enjoy these attractions. I can never do these again but have found that it really doesn't matter. My health is more important. Your son will still have a great time.

If this is your first trip to WDW, and you are not likely to be able to come again within a year or two, and your son is a thrill-ride kid, you might consider postponing the trip, even if it costs you a few hundred dollars to reschedule flights, etc. There is alot to do at WDW, but for my boys, who are now 9 and 11, the stuff he won't be able to do are the high points of the trip.

Your orthopedist will be able to give you the final answer, I think much will depend on a) how severe the break is and where it is located, and b) how they immobilize it.

It's going to be tough, though. Obviously the big thrill rides won't be a good idea. Anything that lands with a jolt or jerks you around is going to be painful for him, all of that shock will be transmitted right up through the collarbone. Pirates and Maelstrom might be a problem, because of the small drop.

Forget Dinosaur, I swear that thing could break your collarbone, it's so jerky.... :rotfl:

Star Tours tosses you around a good bit, too, as does Kilimanjaro Safaris. Kali River Rapids is probably out as well.

Honestly, unless the break is not severe and it's very firmly immobilized, you might want to consider postponing the trip. Most of the best rides may be off-limits for him. Unless you're fairly frequent visitors and you know another trip will be coming up in a year or so, I'd consider postponing until he can really enjoy himself.

Sorry....I hope we're all wrong and the doc says he can do anything he wants. :wave2:

All he needs to do is tape it up and put some dirt on it and he'll be fine. :)

Ok maybe not. I'm very sorry to hear that about your son and I hope the injury is not so severe that he cannot have a wonderful time. Here's a little bit of pixiedust:

and just a thought, in addition to the other rides, I don't think the stich invasion would be good because it has a harness that pushes down on you and I imagine that would hurt something fierce if you had a shoulder injury.

Keep us posted on things

I agree 100%! I have a ds9 (will be 10 in Jan.) who's broken his arm 3x. He's done WDW with a cast once but the collarbone can't be casted so it's usually some type of brace or sling. (I'm not an ortho MD but I'm an xray tech.)
Your ds would still see WDW but at his age and it being his 1st time, he'll just see all that he can't do. I think those are the things that make WDW so famous. It's not like he's 3 and there's so much he can't go on. He's the perfect age to go on everything and he'll be even more sad to see others enjoying what he can't. JMHO but I would pay whatever fees I had to and reschedule to go as soon as ortho says it's ok. He'll be sad for now but he'll be glad you did once he gets there. He'll understand. I'm so sorry. :goodvibes

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement and the wonderful lists and suggestions. We head to the doctor this afternoon. I picked up the x-ray from the hospital and for the life of me I can't see ANYTHING. He is doing fine (went to school as per ER) and is more upset about basketball right now that anything else. Since he hasn't been to Disney I don't think it is registering with him that he may be limited there.

I will update on the doctor's orders!

I hope that your son feels better soon. My DS (14 at the time) broke his collar bone last winter snowboarding and never even missed a day of school. This was 3 days before my DH and I were going to WDW to celebrate our Anniversary. I wanted to cancel, but DS made us go. Let us know how he is doing when you return!!!

Trish

Sorry to hear this! :(
Please give us an update as to what the Dr. says.
