Why is it such a big deal if a kid (10 year old )eats off the kid menu? If we go to a really nice resturaunt, my son can't find anything to eat, He usually just wants a burger or pizza and He hardly eats anything. Does disney want the extra money for extra food so they can throw it away? I know it will be fine at the counter service places but I hope they will allow him at the sit downs to order from the kids menus. We had planned on going to Hollywood and vine for the Fantasmic show but will be cancelling that, will NOT pay $25 for him.

I have heard of only one instance where an adult was charged more than the regular price for eating a child's meal, but that it was a larger quantity.

In the past Disney has always allowed anyone to order and eat a child's meal at either a menu table service or counter service location. It is only at buffet's and other all-you-can-eat locations where age is a factor.

We have the meal plan and I'm in the process of doing some rearranging for the Table service meals. I know at the buffets I will have to use one of his credits but nonbuffet I was planning on paying for 2 of his meals so we could go to Coral Reef for dinner one night.

THANKS

I read 2 threads recently where the posters said that their over 9 children were charged double the child's meal price. (but no increase in food portion). This is the part that scares me. I will gladly pay more, if the portion size is also increased. The two places where trouble has been reported was Spoodles and LeCellier.

We just got back from Disney and my 10, 13, and 14 year old travlers all ate off the kid's meals with no problems encountered. At Artist Point, when my son ordered the kid's hamburger, the waitress did tell me that it was small and might not be enough for him. She asked if he wanted an adult burger. We took it. They charged him $10 for the meal rather than $5 but we were glad we got it. It was a 6 oz burger versus the 3 oz burger.

We had the same experience as Christine.

Our smaller 10 year old son always ordered off the Children's Menu without any problems or questions.

Our 14 year old daughter (a somewhat pickey eater) would usually ask for both menus -- regular and Child's. She would sometimes order a child's meal, and sometimes, depending on what they had, would order an adult meal.

Thanks for the info but the new policy goes into effect on July 1st. That's when I think the new problems will arise with age.

I posted about the fact that our friends were charged double for their teens to order off the kid's menu at Le Cellier (with NO increased portions) but I don't mean to scare anyone. It may be we just got a greedy CM. I hope it is not a permanent trend. It's kind of ironic since although my 9 year old does order off the kid's menu sometimes (but not in a steakhouse since he loves steak and wants a big one) my 11 and 14 year olds always eat off the adult menu so in our trips to WDW we'd never asked for someone older to order off the kid's menu but I had read here about it being done all the time and so when my friend and I were planning on our p.s.'s for our families I told her no problem if her teens wanted to eat off the kid's menu and then they got double charged at Le Cellier. Ugh. Actually I wish it had been on our bill instead of theirs because I would have complained but I think my friends didn't want to since they were with us. I just wanted to let you all know so unlike us you ask if there is an extra charge when they smile and nod yes, they can order off the kid's menu so at least you won't get a surprise when you get the bill.

I don't think the age change coming in July 1st is going to affect table service restaurants. Currently, all the menus say "for our guests 11 and under" and it makes you feel that you cannot order off the kids menu if you are older. Well, apparently, adults do it all the time. It is just a suggestion from Disney and they do not enforce it and never have. I think they are changing it to 9 years old to try to get people to order off the adult menu more. I also think that since the kids portions are so small, maybe they have adjusted the menu down accordingly. My DS (10) is what I would call a normal eater; however, many of the kids meal portions *were* too small for him. So, I'm thinking that maybe Disney is trying to clue people in that these are portions for very small people. They've probably had people complaining that the portions were too small. I do know that the Disney kid's meal portions were smaller than what we get at our restaurants at home (Outback, Chili's, etc).

The buffets are a different matter altogether and I think it's a crime. Disney needs to come up with some intermediate pricing for the 9-13 age group. I was really disgusted to pay $27 for my 13/14 year olds at Boma. They definitely made money on me there. Most normal 13 year olds cannot pack in food like an adult (I know there are exceptions). It would be nice if they had a child's price, a teen price, and an adult price.

We love doing the buffets and Disney but only went to one dinner and one breakfast buffet now that we are traveling with teens.

My son is turning 10 right before our trip next year. He, as well as his younger sisters, love going to Chef Mickeys, LTT, and Hoop de Doo. :sad2: I haven't decided whether to do any of these our next trip, because I think it is highway robbery to pay an adult price for him. He won't eat near enough at any of these places to justify an adult price. I agree with the idea that Disney needs a new price range for the 10-13 year olds.

I agree. The only reason we didn't do the dining plan was because I couldn't see paying the adult price for my 11 year old who will probably only eat hamburgers the entire trip.

Thank you. I thought I had missed something really important. I guess that will teach me to check the date on the first post. :)

It got me for a minute, too. That's why I posted in caps-so others might notice it. I couldn't figure out what the new policy was.:lmao:

We were in WDW just before the policy changed in '05 and then there again a few months later...my dd was the same age, but had to switch to adult prices at the buffet meals. Sure, it irked me but what are you going to do.
Now, we've been many times since the change and my dd has always been able to order from the children's menu with no addtl cost. She is 13, and tall..but CMs have always been very helpful in getting her what she has wanted.

If I understand this correctly, there is no age restriction on "kids meals" at a Counter Service place. I doubt it would make any difference, as we generally get two adult meals and one kid's meal for Mrs. YEKCIM, myself, and our 8 year old daughter, and we usually end up swapping many of the components ("I'll trade you a half a tuna sandwich for your Mac & Cheese", etc). There may be cases, though, where we might want one adult meal and two kid's meals to divide among the three of us. This is OK, right? In any event, I guess it would be impossible to enforce, since one family member usually is dispatched to the pay-n-wait line.

My 22 year old niece ordered of the children's menu at 50's Prime Time last August. She was not hungry and the CM said it was fine. I don't know if this was unusual.

HDD is the biggest shame...why pay for alcohol when he can't even drink it. DH hasn't had a sip in almost 20 years and I rarely drink...I wish there were two options in the pricing; one with unlimited alcohol and one without.
