This was the first Disney vacation for my 3 boys Spencer, Alex and Nicholas, ages 13, 11 and 7. It was the first trip for me and DH since our honeymoon 17 years ago. I made a lot of ADRs including 2 character breakfasts at Crystal Palace and Cape May; Le Cellier, San Angel Inn, Bluezoo, Whispering Canyon, Rose & Crown, Ohana, Kona Café, 50s Prime Time, SciFi Dine In, and Hollywood & Vine. We did not do the dining plan because I got a good discounted room rate.
Since making the ADRs, a house that we have liked for a long time went up for sale and that got us thinking about getting gazelle intense (all you Dave Ramsey fans will know what Im talking about) and paying off our house quickly, like in one year, so that we can move to the bigger house we want. That got me thinking that any money I have leftover from the trip could be put on the house. So as the time got closer, I was having second thoughts about spending so much money on food. We could certainly eat for less at counter service places. In the end, I decided to keep all of our ADRs anyway because I wanted my family to experience the food, fun, and atmosphere of all the restaurants. But my husband and I decided that we would split some meals because the portions of food looked so big (from the pictures Ive seen) and we didnt really want to gain a lot of weight on this trip anyway. Also, we decided to eat most breakfasts in our room, which saved us a lot of money. I brought with us a whole suitcase full of individual containers of cereal, muffins, and breakfast bars. And we would order water instead of pop at most restaurants unless it was included. This alone would save us at least $12 at each meal and keep us from getting dehydrated.
Friday December 15 Epcot
Lunch at Sunshine Seasons. My husband and I split the turkey and muenster sandwich. It was good and filled us both up. My boys each had a chicken leg, mashed potatoes, carrots and applesauce kids meal which came with a drink. What a great value the kids meal is at $4.99 or $5.99. It was all good, especially the mashed potatoes. Great selection here at Sunshine Seasons. For dessert Mickey bars. Wonderful but very messy.
Dinner at Whispering Canyon. Our waitress was Hedda Lettuce. She was great. We were seated in the main dining room where all the antics occur. The place was noisy and busy. Spencer and DH both ordered cheeseburgers (they were not on the dinner menu but Hedda said we could still get them). Spencer also got the delicious bottomless vanilla shake. He drank two of these. Alex ordered the skillet. He is my most adventurous eater. He did not like the baked beans, but really enjoyed the chicken, ribs, green beans, and corn. I had the nachos. They were good. Nicholas had a kids meal hotdog and a bottomless vanilla shake. (Did I say we were all going to order water? So much for that idea.) Nicholas participated in the pony races and coloring contest. He had a good time. Alex asked for a refill of his sprite. He thought that she would bring him one of the famous large glasses, but instead she took him somewhere in the back and made him get his own refill. This was a fun restaurant and Im glad we tried it.
Saturday December 16 Magic Kingdom
Lunch at Kona Café. We went to MK from 9:00 until 1:15, then came back to our hotel for a break and a late lunch at Kona. I had read many good reviews of Kona and was most looking forward to dessert! DH had the turkey club with sweet potato chips. I had the pan-asian pasta, which was delicious. Spencer had chicken strips and Nicholas had a burger from the kids menu. (By the way, it was never a problem for my two oldest boys to order from the kids menu. And the portions were always plenty big for them.) Alex had chicken noodle soup and a smoothie. All the boys had the kiddie cone for dessert and DH and I had the chocolate lava cake. It was wonderful. It was moist and warm and the hot fudge was delicious. We all liked our food, especially the desserts. This is where I first took pictures of our food. The boys all thought I was crazy but how could I resist a picture of my cute Nicholas with a kiddie cone.
Dinner at Columbia Harbor House. My husband had the ham sandwich and said it was good. My boys and I had the fish huge portions of fish and fries. We were all stuffed. I would probably try some other counter service restaurants before we come back here again, but it was good.
Sunday December 17 Magic Kingdom
Breakfast We had an 8:05 reservation at Crystal Palace, but I couldnt get anybody up and moving in time. I didnt force them. I knew that if they were tired, we would not enjoy it. We didnt get to MK until 9:00 so we missed our breakfast with Pooh. We did Space Mtn. and Buzz Lightyear first and then came back to the Main Street Bakery where we had the croissant breakfast sandwiches, muffins, donuts, and juice. It was delicious, especially the croissants. The total was about $35. I told the CM at the cash register that we had missed our CP breakfast. She said that the selection at CP wasnt a whole lot more than what they had at the Bakery and for a lot less price. I dont know if thats true or not, but we were full and it was good. Oh, I almost forgot about the french toast loaf (I think that's what it's called.) Spencer ordered this and I tried some. It was sooooo good. I don't even know how to describe it. We didn't put syrup on it; it's like a coffee cake kind of bread maybe.
Dinner at Ohana. Our ADR wasnt until 7:00 but we were all hungry at 5:00, so we went there at opening to see if we could be seated early. They gave us a pager and it went off about 10 minutes later. We had a wonderful table right by the window looking out at the pool and MK. I was surprised with the nice table, especially since we weren't supposed to be there for another two hours. This was one of the meals Id been most looking forward to most. I had a Lapu Lapu to start. It was delicious. My husband and I loved the shrimp we ate two bowls of it. DH said it was the best shrimp hed ever had. We also loved the salad and the new cheesy potatoes delicious. The wonton chips and dips were okay but we didnt eat many, saving room for the real food. I didnt like the peanut dip, the green one was okay, with the red one being best. However, Nicholas loved the chips and asked for a refill on the chips and the orange colored dip. The only thing he ate the whole night was the wonton chips. We didnt eat many wings. They were really messy. We tried all 4 of the meats. None of them were overcooked or dry as Id read. We all liked the steak the best. I was too full to eat the sausage or turkey. Before dessert (or before the skewers, I cant remember), the waitress brought a plate of hot towels to our table. That was a nice touch. The Bananas Foster was heavenly we all loved it. It was so moist and flavorful. I think it was one of the best desserts of our trip. I wish I could have eaten more, but I was stuffed. Nicholas really enjoyed the coconut races, hula dancing, parading around the room with maracas, and doing the limbo. He still sings the song I wanna go back, to my little grass shack Those are the only lines we can remember. Does anyone know the rest of the song?
This was one of our best dining experiences. We would definitely come back again.
Now Ohana was the first meal where DH got a little sticker shock. Id been planning this trip for a year and I knew that our two oldest boys were considered adults. And I knew that it would cost us about $26 a piece for this dinner, except for Nicholas who still gets child prices. But I knew it would be worth it to have this family time together and to see Nicholas participate in all the fun activities and to have all that food brought out to us. And I was prepared to pay the price. But DH was not so prepared. Fortunately, other than raising his bushy eyebrows, he took it all in stride and didnt say a word about the prices anywhere.
Monday Disney MGM Studios.
Lunch SciFi Dine In. We loved this place. We were seated in the first or second row right in front of the screen. The boys had the best time watching the movie and cartoon clips. The food was good. DH and I split a Reuben and an order of onion rings. Half a sandwich and onion rings filled us up plenty. The boys all ordered from the kids menu, no problem. They ate everything and then ordered the kids sundaes for dessert. It was so relaxing to sit there in the dark, watching movies, and taking a break after a busy morning. This is one place where they turned away anyone without reservations. They were full for both lunch and dinner. We would definitely come back again.
Dinner Hollywood & Vine. Our lunch ADR was early (11:30 a.m.) but we were all still too full from lunch for this 4:30 ADR. So I asked the CM at check in if itd be possible for us to come back a little later. She checked us in and then said to come back at 5:15. That gave us time to use our ToT and RnR fast passes that Id gotten in the morning. By 5:15 we were hungry. We all really liked this buffet which had a lot of good selections, particularly the Alfredo with crab, the prime rib, the turkey pot roast, and the shrimp. We would definitely come back again.
Tuesday morning off; afternoon/evening at Epcot.
Breakfast Boardwalk Bakery. We had the breakfast sandwich, breakfast burritos, Krispy Kreme donuts, and chocolate croissant. The food was okay, nothing great, but it filled us up.
Lunch I had ADRs for Rose & Crown, but we were having such a good time at the pool that we missed our ADR. We got chicken strip kids meals from Hurricane Hannahs. It was nothing special, just okay.
Dinner San Angel Inn. My boys really enjoyed looking around at the market area but we got beeped within about 5 minutes, so we didnt have much time to shop. DH and I split a combination platter, Nicholas only wanted chips and salsa, Spencer had quesadillas, and Alex had a kids burrito. The combination plate was plenty for the two of us it was steak, an enchilada and something else. I had two margaritas, DH had one, and the boys each had a non-alcoholic margarita. They had a good time drinking thei margaritas. My margaritas were good but not very strong. Everybody cleaned their plates I think this is one place where the portions were not that big.
Wednesday MGM again.
Breakfast Starring Rolls Bakery. We rode RnR and ToT first thing and then caught the 10:00 Beauty and the Beast show. While the boys got our seats, I went to Starring Rolls and bought us muffins, cinnamon rolls, bananas, and juice which we ate while waiting for the show to begin. The muffins were really good.
Lunch SciFi Dine In, again. I had made an ADR for both our days at MGM, not quite sure which one we would keep. The boys had such a nice time here on Monday that I asked them if they wanted to eat here again and they all said yes. This time, instead of dessert, they got the glow in the dark ice cubes. Again, we had a nice relaxing lunch, ordering the same things, except DH and I split the turkey sandwich. It was not as good as the reuben.
Dinner 50s Prime Time. I had told DH and the boys about this place and they all told me they did not want to eat here. They did not want to be told what to do or how to eat. I made an ADR anyway. Spencer, Alex and I had the fried chicken dinners, DH had the meatloaf, and Nicholas had a kids meal. I had a dads blue drink (dont remember what it was called) which was very good and strong. For dessert, Alex and I split dads sundae, and the others had hot fudge sundaes. Dads sundae was very good and very sweet - brownie, ice cream, hot fudge, lots of whip cream, m&ms and cracker jacks. Perfect for two of us. This was one of the best meals of our trip. The food was delicious especially the chicken and green beans. But the best part was having mom as our server. First thing upon sitting down, mom tells Alex he has to set the table and hands him the silverware and napkins. He was cool with this. Spencer didnt eat all his beans and tried to cover them up with some potatoes and a napkin. Mom caught on to that and tried to spoon feed them to him. He was laughing so hard. Then she made him stand with his nose against the wall while the whole restaurant joined in telling him to eat all his veggies. Mom also gave us homework while we waited for our food name 10 Disney movies set in England. Name four state capitols with two letter us in the name. It was a lot of fun. We'd definitely eat here again.
Thursday Animal Kingdom.
Breakfast Donalds Breakfastasaurus. This was not planned. We ran out of breakfast food in our room, so when we got to AK we were all hungry. We went to Donalds to see if they could seat us and they could. This is another place where we had a great time. I read mostly negative reviews about Donalds, but we really liked the food. The breakfast pizza was good, as were the eggs, French toast, pancakes, and potatoes. They also had a nice fruit selection and Krispy Kreme donuts. It was fun seeing Donald, Mickey, Goofy and Pluto, but our server really made our day. He had fun with us offering Spencer a cup of hot chocolate from a tray and spilling the whole tray (of empty cups) on him he jumped a mile, it was so funny; taking our picture with a camera that shoots water; and squirting me with a fake ketchup bottle. We laughed and had a great time here.
Lunch Pizzafari. Another unplanned restaurant. I had planned to eat at Tusker House, but we didnt want to walk all the way back to Africa, so we had pizzas and ceasar salad here and sat outside and watched the parade go by. The pizza was really good, as was the salad.
Dinner ESPN. We werent really hungry so we just split nachos and Redwings. The nachos were good; the wings were too hot for me. We didnt order the hottest wings, but we didnt get the mild ones either. Well get the mild ones next time. Our waitress was new and very slow. This is the only place that I can say we had poor service.
Friday day off.
Breakfast Spoodles. We didnt get up until almost 10:00 so we had a late breakfast. We had the All American breakfast and the all you can eat breakfast platters. The food was really good, especially the waffles and potatoes. Nice relaxing atmosphere too.
Lunch Earl of Sandwich. We had 3 turkey sandwiches, chips, and chocolate pudding (yummy) and I had the Christmas special which was a sandwich with turkey, dressing and cranberries. We all really liked the sandwiches. The turkey and dressing was different but good.
Dinner Beaches & Cream. We were supposed to take the kids to Camp Dolphin and have dinner for two at Bluezoo. But we spent all afternoon at Disney Quest and didnt feel like going out. So we just had burgers and No Way Joses at Beaches & Cream. The burgers were good and the sundae was great. This was actually our 2nd trip to B&C for No Way Joses. It is the best sundae Ive ever had.
Saturday morning off; afternoon Epcot.
Breakfast Spoodles again. Same at Friday.
Lunch snacks from Hurricane Hannahs.
Dinner Le Cellier with CP package. When the waiter explained that we could have an appetizer, entrée and dessert with the package, the boys were really excited. Spencer took the biggest, most expensive steak the 14 ounce NY strip, with the beef kabobs appetizer. He wolfed down the appetizer in about 2 minutes. He said it was delicious and he didnt even have to chew, it was so tender. DH and I both had the wasabi shrimp appetizer and the maple filet mignon. We both loved the shrimp. The coleslaw was spicy and the shrimp were great. I loved the cream cheese mashed potatoes and the steak was nice and tender. Alex had the cheese soup which he dipped the breadsticks in and the herb-crusted prime rib. He could cut it with a fork. Nicholas had the cheeseburger which looked really good. For dessert, we had the chocolate cake, the dessert sampler, the chocolate mousse, and a hot fudge sundae. I especially liked the crème brulee and the raspberry sorbet. I had been looking forward to this meal and it was all I expected it to be. Our server was very good and kept our glasses filled.
Sunday departure day.
I had an ADR at Cape May for breakfast at 8:30, but we all slept in until about 9:30 so we missed it. We were exhausted from our late night at Epcot. Instead we had breakfast at the McDonalds at Downtown Disney followed by a few hours of shopping. Then we used our buy one get one free sundae coupon and had hot fudge sundaes from Ghiradellis. It was a nice way to end our vacation.
While flying home, I asked the kids what they thought were our best meals. They said 50s Prime Time with mom, Sci Fi Dine In, and Donalds Breafastasaurus because of our great waiter. DH voted for Ohana as the best. I have to agree. We did have a lot of fun at these places.
Thanks for reading.
