10 Days in October: Argle-Bargle or Foofarah? UPDATED: POSTS #984 & 995!!!

Nancy, I knew you'd appreciate that! :rotfl2:

This is really a small world - I live about 40 minutes from Battle Creek, and spend a lot of time there for shopping and kids sporting events! Of all the places in Michigan you could be from.... When you are famous-er and St Louis tries to claim you, I will say "you know she is actually a Michigan girl"

Pixiesrule - isn't that strange? Now that I look back over some of the posts on this thread, it does seem like a lot of Michigan DISers have stopped by for a read....hmmmm. Maybe I'm putting out some kind of home-state vibe? And famous..heh heh heh...me? Should that ever happen I'll be sure to tip my hat to the town that started it all. ;)

Thanks for reading!

Completely enjoying your report!

And you are so not alone. Sadly my husband shares from the same malady. :sad2: At home he procrastinates the washing of undies until they are threatening to throw themselves in hot water and go for a tumble all by themselves.:scared1:

But there is something about that cute washer and dryer stacked. Plus I think the FREE soap gets him. He manufactured reasons to wash.

Him:Don't you want your bra washed?

Me:No, I'm wearing it right now but thanks.

Him:Are you sure you need it? I'm just washing a few things (including every other bra I brought and haven't even worn!).

:confused3 I was hoping that he was alone in this, but apparently you all need some kind of miniature washing machine support group. If you want to start one then please let me sign him up. :laundy: :rotfl:

Now that is just funny...Vacation Launderers of the World Unite!

That needs some work...it's a bit awkward, isn't it?

You are totally spot on about the free detergent - if it weren't provided I wouldn't be doing laundry; it's just that simple. I have a funny story about that further along in the trip - I'd share it now but that would spoil all the Grimace fun!

Thanks so much for reading!

Great writing. I am enjoying your report. We typically vacation in timeshares so I understand the lure of the laundry. Actually, it's not a bad thing to go home with a suitcase full of clean clothes instead of a suitcase full of wilted shirts, smelly socks, and crumpled, creaseless pants.

Kay, thank you for taking the time to stop by (I know you've been working on your own fabulous report). I'm happy to know you're enjoying our trippie.

You make a great point about packing a clean suitcase but I'm such a freak that I still end up washing most of our clothes again once we're home. I find that if I don't they reek of suitcase-smell, and that really bugs me.

After reading through this I think I may need therarpy...;)

Oh, and glad to know you like Plankton - there will be much more of him as the week progresses.

Actually, I live less than an hour from Battle Creek also. We have family passes to the zoo there.
Apparently, you are putting out a VERY localized MI vibe!

My dh wants me to throw in his fav Simpsons' quote from Groundskeeper Willie (said with best fake Scottish accent):
"I was wrestling wolves when you werrre still suckling at yer mother's teeeet."

I don't mind vacation laundry either, though at Pop there is no free laundry. So that's saying something.
(I have too. Can you imagine hauling clothes for 9 people for 6, or hopefully our next trip, 10, nights??? :scared1: )

Ok, now that that is taken care of...back to your updating! popcorn:: :cheer2:

You know I don't like ethnic food!

Seriously, this entire segment with the baked good convo has made me entirely too upset that we have no baked goods in the house at the moment...

Work's been horrendous lately, it was good to check-in and see your updates! Thanks!

Brenda..again, I thank you from the bottom of heart for NOT "D.I.D"!!!!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Saturday, October 21st - Hungry are the Damned...

Farewell sweet donuts, you've obviously been sacrificed to the gods of corporate oversight. :sad2:

Dear Homer,

IOU one emergency donut.

Signed,

Homer

:lmao:

Jason and I are agreed - it is very hot today. This weather reminds us of when we were in St. Martin last fall on our Disney Cruise (hello anyone from the Molar Express!!).
TBC...

Here's just one of the Molar Expressers/Konked Kruisers checkin' in. BTW...check out our old thread. We have an addition to our Molar Expressers!!:cutie:

You're near Battle Creek, too? This is beginning to be as strange as the WDW-Brenda vortex...:lmao:

Love the Simpsons quote - I can see Willy sitting under a tree in the schoolyard sharing a wee nip with that escaped wolf. Poor wolfie!

Hope to update again tonight - there was supposed to be more last night but the server crashed and when it came back up it was really moving slowly.

Donuts - is there anything they can't do? ;)

Sorry to hear that work has been treating you badly - I know the feeling; we're entering our really busy period now and that will probably last through mid-June.

Thanks again for reading!

Brenda..again, I thank you from the bottom of heart for NOT "D.I.D"!!!!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Nancy, thank you for that! I promise never to D.I.D. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the heads up - I went back and posted a congrats to Paul on the arrival of his newest Cardinal fan! :goodvibes

In honor of yesterday being pi day, I thought I would chime in with another of my favorite quotes:

"He didn't say 'science', he said, um, 'pie-pants'"

MMMm..... pie-pants.

Anyway, still loving the trippie! I haven't felt the need to say "stupid thread! Be more funny!" even once! :rotfl2:

I can't believe I missed Pi day! :headache:

Happy belated 3.1415926 to all of you. :goodvibes

Pie-pants...I love that episode!! Have you heard anyone use the word unblowuppable lately? :lmao:

Thanks for continuing to read - if we're not funny it must mean we're not drinking. :rotfl2:

BTW, here's wishing you good luck convincing your family to visit WDW next year: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

I live just outside of Sturgis. Been to the zoo many times. Just when you think the world is huge...

Keep up the good work on the trippie Brenda. We are leaving in 4 months for our trip, and I want to be done reading yours by then.....I have been so patiently awaiting the arrival of the Grimace

Kim

Okay, I fell behind again - sorry! I love to wash clothes on vacation. It makes me feel better when I arrive home and most of the clothes are already washed! If there was one right in our room with detergent - I would probably wash everyday!

That picture of you on the bench - what is in your lap? Looks like a purse...and is that like a planner with all your well written strategies!!?:rotfl:

I really need to go check out your cruise report. We are looking at book in 08. Would you recommend fall or spring?

Saturday, October 21st - Hungry are the Damned, cont'd...

Author's note to her editorial staff: Lighten up, you politically correct, pompous goats! You need a drink, or several, because the rod up your collective butts has a rod up its butt.

Author's note to her fellow DISers: Thank you all for reading and for your continued kind replies - it's been so much fun reliving this trip with all of you! And soon we can all double our fun with the Grimace!

And now, back to Hungry are the Damned, starring the ravenous duo and their maniacial vacation mascot...

One of the things we have always loved about staying at the Beach Club Villas is its proximity to EPCOT. During the Food and Wine Festival there is nothing better in our book than a five-minute walk from the hotel to the International Gateway where there is rarely a human pile up at the gates. I can't recall the last time it took us longer than 5-10 minutes to gain entr...huh? What was that?

Excuse me for a moment... Plankton is trying to get my attention. Why don't you enjoy some music while I see what he needs...

:rolleyes1
:rolleyes1

Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine...

:rolleyes1
:rolleyes1

OK, I'm back - sorry for the interruption. Where was I?

That's right...the International Gateway. Well, take it from us, you don't want to enter EPCOT through the back entrance, nosireebob! The wait times are outrageous and there aren't enough CMs manning the turnstiles and you can't even see the giant golfball from back there. We really think you're better off just accessing the park through the front entrance. ;)

Remember that picture in my last post...the one with Plankton and me? My backpack was taking up approximately 1/3 of the entire bench and it was loaded with stuff...prescriptions, iPods, camera, cell phones, passports, money, special good behavior gifties for the Grimace... that thing was so heavy when Jay slung it over his shoulders he sank into the sidewalk by two inches.

I'm not really sure why the security guard didn't take an extra moment or two to examine more closely the contents of my backpack, but I think it had something to do with the plush Plankton glaring at him from inside the bag, jostling for fresh air with an iPod re-charger and PassPorter's Guide to Walt Disney World.

His internal dialogue probably went something like this:

"Look at the size of that backpack..."

"I wonder if it's time for my break?"

"I guess I'd better take a look inside that thing - just once I wish someone would have something interesting or unexpected for me to..."

"What the hell is that???"

While this picture wasn't taken at the exact moment that I just described, I think it provides a nice frame of reference for the security guard's experience.
DSC01679.jpg

The shaken guard waved us through and within moments we were official - I heaved a sigh of relief when those park hoppers went through without a hitch because I always worry that somehow they're going to get demagnetized before we even make it to Florida, let alone the entrance to one of the WDW theme parks.

We were lucky enough to find an empty locker to stash the backpack and after grabbing the camera we were on our way to find refreshment. I should mention that we left Plankton in the locker to guard my pack and he has yet to forgive us for this terrible breach of vacation etiquette.

I devoured your dining review this afternoon, and loved it. I was looking forward to reading your trip report then too, unfortunately my child needed dinner and a ride to his swimming lessons(I don't know what was wrong with his tricycle???) But whatever, I have stayed up way past my bedtime to catch up on this one. It was worth it, you are great.

Saturday, October 21st - Hungry are the Damned...cont'd

If we'd given serious thought to our food and beverage needs we would have turned right at the bridge leading into France instead of walking through Great Britain and Canada and from there into FutureWorld. I seem to recall that we were interested in checking out this new attraction...Soarin'...until we saw the stand-by wait time of 65 minutes and a FastPass return between 3PM and 4PM.

Thanks anyway, we'll come back when we're not dehydrated and hungover.

We did accomplish one thing by venturing back into FutureWorld...we were able to have our picture taken with the backside of EPCOT's giant golfball. Isn't PhotoPass fun?
1700.jpg

Look who it is: Squinty-Can't-See!

If I'm not careful people will start calling me the Grimace! :lmao:

I would like to make a comment about the PhotoPass photographers...some of them are very good at what they do, and others probably shouldn't even be handling a camera. This picture, for instance, is not centered. And it might have been a nice touch if the photographer had waited for the fountain to show off a bit before actually capturing the moment for our eventual misty, water-colored, scrapbook memories.

A little more thought and an extra couple of seconds could have turned this into a great picture - instead it's just OK. I could have understood the result a little more if the CM had been up to his earlobes in guests clamoring to have their picture taken. But as you can plainly see by the utter lack of people in the background...everyone else in the park was either riding Soarin' or waiting in line to do so. There was no need to rush, Mr. Speedy-Shutter-PhotoPass-Guy. ;)

Right about now my head is beginning to throb...it's just too hot for this time of year, especially when your liver is working overtime to detoxify your bloodstream. We decide to take a siesta of sorts in Mexico...the inside of the temple offers a cool, welcome respite from the midday heat and we can scope out the awesome hand carved, painted animals that are for sale in the vestibule. **50 points for using vestibule in a trippie...that cafe mocha will soon be mine!!**

One of our WDW vacation traditions is that for each visit we select one animal from Mexico to add to our collection. It's been two years since our last visit which means we get to buy two animals this time! Prior to this trip we have purchased a psychedelic cat, a flat alligator, and a very angry turtle. We spent about ten minutes pricing different carvings and earmarking the ones we liked best so that we would be better prepared once we were ready to buy later in the week. I really regret not taking some pictures of the display because it's just amazing, but I promise to take some when we go back in May and will post them at that time for those of you who might be interested in taking a look.

I tend to be a purist about certain things at WDW, which is just my way of trying to hide from myself the fact that I'm beginning to sound like a crotchety old-timer when I talk about certain theme park attractions. We always take a ride on El Rio del Tiempo during a visit to EPCOT. Ever since my first visit to the park in 1982, when we quite possibly waited three days to get on this ride, the river of time has always been a dork-family tradition. Is it outdated, cheesy, and filled with stereotypes that border on the cuturally insensitive?

Absolutely, but that's half the fun! That, and the obnoxious song that all the marionettes are dancing to at the end of the ride. You guys know what I'm talking about...

La la la la la la...la la la la la la...La la la la la la...la la la la la la...

The recent announcement that this ride is being re-made into a sort of Mexican adventure with Donald Duck, a parrot, and a rooster leaves me both puzzled and sad. If I were Mexico my response to Disney would have been, "After 25 years that's the best idea you had?"

We took this picture because we've always thought these guys were cool looking:
DSC01204.jpg

I sure hope they survive the cut!

We emerge from Mexico's River of Time feeling somewhat refreshed and hungry. After wandering the World Showcase for a bit we find ourselves in South Africa where we forgot to take a picture of the food booth. Their menu offerings were as follows:

Bobotie with Mango Chutney
Durban Spiced Chicken on Sugarcane
Melktert

Beyond Sauvignon Blanc
Kanu Chenin Blanc
Indaba Merlot
Indaba Shiraz

Jason selected the Durban Spiced Chicken and a blanc, the name of which escapes me because right now my mind is drawing a blanc. :lmao: :lmao:
DSC01207.jpg

There are a few things I would like to draw your attention to. The first is that this chicken was not served with a sugarcane stick - that is a wooden skewer and if you're not careful you could end up with a splinter in your gums. Secondly, the chicken is perched on an unnamed kind of cornbread mush - as far as I'm concerned it looks like a postage stamp sponge and it tasted like one, too. The chicken wasn't bad, but it was spicy, which was something I definitely didn't need at that point. Jason really enjoyed this selection, but we both agreed that it was just too warm to eat and drink around the world showcase.

I had called the resort in the hopes that our room might be ready, but no such luck. Drat! I was tired and cranky and kicking myself for not remembering to pack our swim apparel into the backpack because what I really wanted at that moment was a lounge chair, a big bottle of cold water, and a nap.

Instead I settled for Japan and this:
DSC01208.jpg

Kaki Gori!! We shared the rainbow, which has three flavors: strawberry, honeydew melon, and tangerine. Would you believe this thing only cost $2.25? Absolutely one of the best priced snack options in the entire park and quite refreshing, too.

Coming soon...your room awaits you and so does the pool; first contact with the parents goes awry, and the Grimace doesn't like crowds.

Thanks so much for reading and for acknowleding our geode!! :goodvibes

Thanks Kim! I better have this finished by the time you take your trip or Jason will kill me. When do you leave and where will you be staying? Can we look forward to a trippie from you once you return?

Hey Stacey! Let's see...the picture... yes, my purse is on top with the flap opened and it's resting on top of a travel organizer I bought from Coach a few years ago. It has all kinds of zippered compartments and flaps and cardholders and it was stuffed at that point with park hoppers, MNSSHP tickets, cash, prize envelopes for the Grimace, airline tickets, passports...once we got into our room it fit perfectly in the wall safe. It's actually really handy because I can keep everything we need all in one place.

As for the cruise - we've only sailed in the Fall. The prices are a little lower then because it's hurricane season but the weather was quite nice both times when we sailed in October (2004 and 2005).

Thanks for reading...still waiting for yours! :goodvibes

Well, first of all, thank you very much for your compliment - :flower3:

I stayed up way too late to get these updates finished, too, so it's nice to know that someone is actually reading.

And as for your son... that tricycle comment literally had me on the floor. :lmao: :lmao: So thank you for the laugh and I hope you stick around for the rest of our tale.

My DH and I went to RR last weekend on Saturday night. There is something infectious about that place (maybe its my Scotch-Irish heritage).

We went for dinner and were drawn to the sound of the band in the other room after we had finished eating. Well, lets just say that we closed the place down and didn't get back to our room until 2 a.m. (which annoyingly turned into 3 a.m. all of a sudden due to DST).

The next day we had to check out and drive home to Tampa which doesn't sound so bad unless you use incredibly bad judgement and decide to have wine with lunch at LeCellier and then walk around WS in the heat. (How's that for a run-on sentence?)

Anywhoo... I would've given my right arm for a nice cool dark room to go back to, just to take a quick nap. So we did the next best thing... we drove over to DD and parked in a shady spot in the parking lot, reclined our seats and snoozed for about an hour!

Excellent! :thumbsup2

Thanks - I'm going to start thinking of you as Mr. Mysterious...if you are in fact a Mr. ;)

Wow - sounds like you had so much fun you needed to add an extra day to your stay in order to recuperate!

We've been known to snooze in the car before, too! ;)

Thanks for reading! :goodvibes

Lovin the trip report....thanks for keeping me excited about going back in June!!!

Woot! I'm finally caught up with what I call...

The Mother of All Trip Reports. (Pun slap!)

You're not going to believe this, but I think I know who your other
Brenda and Jay are. I believe I met them from the F&WF a couple of years
ago. If Brenda has short, platinum blonde hair and rectangular-ish trendy
glasses, then that's them. I did a Cooking School with them, and they ended
up being my tablemates at an Exquisite Evening at Epcot.

I know that staying at BCV boggles your navigational skills, but seriously,
if you want to go to DTD after Epcot, the easiest way is to walk out
the International Gateway and catch the Beach Club bus to DTD. :)

I'm thrilled that you discovered the Adventurer's Club and didn't get there
between shows, wonder to yourselves, "What's so great about this place?",
turn around and leave. So many people don't know that there are shows
in this place. Maybe one day you'll stay until their last show in the Library,
the Hoopla! show. Leave at 10pm? Gah!

And there will probably be a bunch of folks I know going to the 10/13
Party for the Senses. The RADP group that usually meets in December is
having a diversion this year to meet during the Festival.

And since I'm staying at BCV during the time you'll be there, we might end up
running into each other.

Ok, I'm looking forward to some Grimace Stories! I don't think anyone who
read your dining report could get enough stories about her! :)
