Opinions on changing my 10.5mo old from formula (2) to milk now instead of waiting until he is 12mo?

Whole or Vitamin D?

If it were me (and 5 years ago it would have been :teeth: ). I would wait til the 1 year. Or even check with your pediatrician.

We had about a 2 month transitional period as well. After formula, DS did NOT care for milk at all. We were mixing it, and gradually adding more milk, less formua. Now he would drink milk ALL DAY if we let him.

Hiya Lewski709! We just went through this with Ella. She will be 1 next Friday. We started adding 2oz. of whole milk to her bottle when she was 10-1/2 months old and gradually increased an ounce per week until she was at 8 oz. She did great! No problems at all. I know the doctors say to wait until 1 year old, but she's allowed to eat everything else dairy and is definetly thriving, so we went ahead.

Now the only trouble we're having is getting her to drink her milk from a cup. She does fine in the morning when she's starving, but at nap time and bed time, she usually doesn't want it. I wanted to have her off the bottle before our trip to WDW, she's down to one at bedtime and I think I'll wait until we get back to take that one.

Good luck!

You asked for opinions, so here's mine. If the child is eating other foods well and does not have a history of a delicate digestive system, I would not hesitate to switch to whole milk. You definitely want to give him/her the extra fat in whole milk until 2 years of age. Also start vitamins, if you haven't already.

However, if the child is a light eater or a picky eater or has history of a delicate tummy, I would keep him/her on formula until at least 12 months. Just a bit of added insurance that he/she is getting everything they need.

Best wishes,
Peggy

I did ask for opinions.....thanks.

My DS is a great eater and is eating table foods well, he loves yogurt. Once the formula can is gone, I think we are gonna give it a whirl.

He is down to about 3 bottles a day and hasn't had one before bed the whole week. In fact, funny as this is.....this is the first week he has slept from 7:30-8pm to 7am without getting up. Prior to that, he was awake 2x's for a bottle and went to sleep on a bottle (not in bed). He hasn't needed it.

I have been giving him a sippy with formula in it with his dinner. He isn't too interested. Although he knows how to use the sippy. I think it is because the formula is cold.

Well, call me a purist.....ideally a baby will be breat fed for the first year of life, but if that is not possible a baby should drink formula for the first year. Formula companies have gotten much better at replicating the unique fats in breats milk that is correlated with brain growth. A child can drink whole milk from the ages of 1-2yo, at which time they can switch to a lower fat product.

said at eleven months to change over so that when the babies came in for their one year check up .....he would know what kind of a month they had on the whole milk......same with my neices triplets.......one month and then a year old check up......plus they went right off formula to milk ......no mixing and no problems......the triplets and my grandkids were on soy formula .....

I would have to agree with this. Those fats are vital to brain growth and I would definitely stay on formula until 1 year. After that, switch to whole fat milk. The idea of formula isn't just for nutrition alone, it is for high fat and other compounds that are essential to growth in the first year. I would definitely talk to your FP or Ped about it before you try it and get his/her opinion. Of course this is just my humble opinion but they have really discovered alot in the last few years about brain growth/health and most agree that it is very important to stay on formula for the entire first year. I know formula is expensive and really becomes a drag towards the end but it is just another few months and it would be worth it to know that you are doing everything you possibly can to ensure good health.

The pediatrician we had for ds#2 said to switch him to whole milk at 9 months. We did and had no problems. One suggestion-when you switch to whole milk don't give it in a bottle. Ped for ds#1 told us bottles and formula, cups and milk. It worked great for ds 1 & 2, now dd......she still likes her bottle now and then.

Good luck........

I nursed both of my kids until they were a year old, then switched to milk; but I can't really see how 2 months would make a huge difference, especially since he does well with table food. I say give it a try, but stick to whole milk.

I switched all of mine right around 10 months. Two were on Similac formula and the girls were all on Isomil soy formula. Never had a bit of problems from the switch (and they all have darn good brains, too! ) :D

Things were very different when mine were born 28 & 17. 28 yrs old was on formula for one month only. As far as I know there's no brain problem if so the 5th graders she teaches are in trouble. By the time I had the 17 yr old doctors had changed to keeping on formula to 6 mos. He's ok too. I don't think 2 mos will make a difference as long as they have a good appetite and eat well.

My ped said off the bottle between 9 & 12 months. Off formula and on to whole milk at 9 months. Both of my kids went straight to whole milk, no mixing, with no problem and they are both honor roll students.
