Cast of Characters. DH and I, in our 50's, adult DS 30. We were here for our 5th Food & Wine Fest.

Today was our AK day. We arrived early and bee lined it to Expidition Everest! We all were very sorry about the closing and change to Tusker House as we believed this to be the best CS restaurant in the World.

We decided in advance to try Flame Tree for lunch. We arrived around noon and it was crazy busy. We were in line for 20 minutes and ended up finding a table to sit at in the very last section by the river. I was beginning to think there would be no where to sit at all.

DH and DS had the "Smoked 1/2 Chicken served with baked beans and corn muffin". I had the "Smoked Turkey Breast Sandwich - sliced turkey breast served on a multi-grain bun with cole slaw". We shared an order of Onion Rings and an order of French Fries.
DS thought his chicken was tasty, but the breast was a bit dry. He said the dark meat (leg and thigh) were very moist. DH agreed, but still enjoyed it - they both devoured all of the chicken. They both only ate a little of the beans and they enjoyed the corn muffin. DH thought the corn muffin was a good replacement for the corn on the cob.
My turkey sandwich was very dry. I did not enjoy it. The roll was heavy and dry (and I like multigrain rolls) and the turkey was dry. I am a mayo person, and this sandwich came with a dijon sauce, which I did not use. It might have been better with mayo.
I loved the cole slaw - it was very tasty, as well as the onion rings Uhm Good!! The french fries were also very good. So although I did not like my sandwich I did not leave hungry.
We enjoyed an Amber Safari beer with lunch.

Dinner was Jiko's. I had been on my April trip with other DS and his family and I wanted to share the experience with DH and DS on this trip. We were not disappointed - it was wonderful.

We checked in about 15 minutes early for our ADR and were given a beeper. We were told that we would most likely be seated at about our ADR time. We walked over to the bar area and I had a glass of South African wine (house wine) very good. and DH and DS enjoyed a beer. We waited about 45 minutes (30 minutes past our ADR) before I decided to go back to the podium and check. The Hostess initialy could not find us in the computer not our beeper number, and then stated that our table was ready right then and asked me to wait just a moment. She took us to the table herself and on the way explained that they had had a problem with the printer that prints out slips to seat parties at tables, and that ours had been lost. She was very apologetic. No big deal. We had enjoyed each others company while waiting. She seated us at a window table and all was well.

Our server was great. Attentive, but not hovering and he made great recommendations when asked. We started with bread and a dipping sauce that was very unique.
DH and DS both started with the "Jiko Summer Field Greens with buttermilk-carrot dressing and whole-wheat crostini". (For anyone who has read all of my daily reviews you may have noticed that DH and DS almost always had exactly the same thing. They are very easy to feed at home :lmao: )
They enjoyed this very much. It was large, fresh and the dressing was good.
I had the "Kenyan Coffee Barbecued Chicken Flatbread - with grilled onions, apple julienne, and four cheeses", which I absolutely Loved - It was GREAT!. I was only able to eat about 1/2 of it, as I wanted to save room for my entree. My only reqret is that I did not think to take the remainder home for breakfast - I am sure it would have been good then too.
We all had the "Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon - with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce", except that DH substituted Mashed Potatoes for the Macaroni and Cheese. They arrived cook as ordered (Medium Rare) and the filet was wonderful. The Mac and Cheese was not as good as last time. DS noted that the Macaroni seemed a little hard and under cooked. It was still good, just not great, And as last time the Red Wine Sauce just enhances the filet.
We shared a Cabernet Sauvignon recommend by our server and it was a perfect accompanientment to the meal.
For dessert DH had the "Pistachio Creme Brulee with layered chocolate bottom" which he enjoyed. I don't remember what DS had for dessert and I was too full to have anything.

This was a spectacular meal. I was delighted that DH and DS enjoyed it as much as I had on my previous trip. I was excited to share it with them and it did not disappoint. DH said it is far superior to Yachtsmen Steakhouse where we ate last trip. The restaurant was relatively quiet. There were very few children there and all in all it was an elegant, adult atmosphere.
I look forward to returning here on our next trip.

I wasn't too impressed with Flame Tree either. I had the BBQ sandwich and it was dry and tasteless. I miss Tusker House

Great review! We were at Jiko on the same night and also had a wonderful meal. It was our second time there and won't be our last.

We were also excited to see Dan Zanes and his band dining there, too. They were performing at the Playhouse Disney concert that week and seemed to be enjoying their meal. OK, those people who don't have kids between 2 and 8 YO probably don't care :rotfl: but we thought it was awfully cool to seem him at Jiko.

We thought FT wasn't bad at all (food wise)....my only gripe was the limited seating area(s) and the chaos at the front counter. There didn't seem to be any type of organization to pick up your food/ place your order....everybody was bunched up right at the serving counter/ cashier kiosk.
