10/24/2009 Bash On the Boat (I'm with BOB) - Thread #7

Ya know ... we're looking at a DL / Vegas trip for Jay's 40th birthday in May 2010.

I realize that this is two years from now, but vacation planning such as this keeps the left side of my brain happy while I'm at work ... :rotfl2:

You're not the only one...I'm planning a 2010 WDW trip, even though DH thinks it's too soon after the cruise (our money tree uprooted itself - I think it went back to its native soil in Sussex). I'm already trying to decide where we'll stay! I have my eye on the Contemporary again (LOVE the monorail::yes:: ) but we'll see.

HELP NEEDED:

Am trying to get from the Hoover Dam up towards ANY viewing point of the Grand Canyon before heading off up to San Francisco (Ive told Hazel "it's just up the road dear":rolleyes1 ),Ive tried using Google but for some odd reason it wants me to go by Flagstaff which appears to be miles out of my way.....Any locals with a route Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee?.....:)

This may not be helpful, but Jay's aunt and uncle who live in Vegas said that it's about a 4-hour drive from there to the Grand Canyon. I'm not sure that there are too many alternate routes, quite frankly.

Hoover Dam is really cool ... I think it's about 30 miles outside of Vegas on the Arizona / Nevada border.

Why don't you look into booking a day tour with a company in Vegas? They offer Hoover Dam / Grand Canyon tours and then you wouldn't have to worry about doing any driving yourself.

Or why not spend that money on a fabulous dinner in Vegas? ;)

Thanks Bendy, however because were trying to "DO" California in 8 days were just so limited to time...

Can we "DO"

Las Vegas
Hoover Dam
Grand Canyon
San Francisco
A Train ride out of Santa Cruz to see the big trees
Malibu coast road
Six Flags

ALL IN 8 DAYS?....:rolleyes1

ps...I remember the last time you recommended a nice restaurant Am still paying off the bill and only Hazel and Jess eat there but it was gorgeous or so am told anyways....:scared1: ....

I would cross the Grand Canyon off your list then - that would eat an entire day, mostly in travel.

Actually I'd consider crossing Vegas off the list, too. Just stay in California and focus on all the things it has to offer ... that will keep you all busy enough.

I see what your saying Mrs Bendy admit it is going to be a push we know but because the last time i was out here some bright spark decided what fun it would be to let the fat bloke travel all the way up to the canyon only to found it full to the brim with cotton wool...:scared1: so you see missing the Canyon AGAIN is simply not an option.....Am researching chartering a Helicopter but so far ive only found firms who (by looking at their prices) are looking to SELL me the bloody thing not lend me one......:rolleyes1

Chris, you can probably see the big trees without driving out to Santa Cruz. There are probably tours out of San Fran. Becky should be able to clarify this.:thumbsup2

We did this last summer, It's a 6 hour drive from LA to the Grand Canyon. Then we went from the Grand canyon to Yosemite. That was a very long day almost 12 hours. But it is so worth it. If you are staying in San franscico you can see the red woods in Muir woods witch is not that far from San fran. That is one of my favorite cities, you will love it. Bring a jacket can be chilly in the summer. The coast north of SF is more spectacular than Malibu. Mendicino is beautiful.

Chris,

In looking at the responses, what about a drive directly to Flagstaff once you land? It is 483 miles on mapquest (7 hours if you drive the speed limit, but no one does). Do the canyon the next day. Then drive to LV via the Hoover Dam the next day. Spend 2 nights there.

Then head from LV to SF, 1 day of driving.

I agree, just go to Muir Woods to see the Redwoods. Just to the north of the city. Should be able to get it done in 1/2 a day.

Do the Monterey drive on your way down to LA - might want to look into a stop at San Luis Obispo if you are doing the coastal drive.

Was it the 6th or 8th that you get to LA? I can never remember.

If it is the 6th, you could do the following, and still get to DL by the 14th:

8/6: Land in LA, drive to Flagstaff
8/7: Grand Canyon
8/8: Drive to LV via Hover Dam
8/9: Las Vegas
8/10: Drive to SF
8/11: Muir Woods, SF City
8/12: More of SF if needed
8/13: Drive to San Luis Obispo via Monterey
8/14: Drive to Anaheim

You might be able to get enough of LV in the one night you're there though and could move the drive to SF up to the 9th if that is the case. More time in SF or other parts of the coast. Also, you could use the extra day for Six Flags on the 13th, otherwise, you'll be going on the 14th.

Your plan is DL on the 15th and just staying around the hotel on the 16th, correct?

Hello everyone! My DH has been having so much fun on the DISBoards that I just had to join for myself! DH is Matthew- or Epcot_VA. So, that would make me the DW- Beth! Our 2 daughters will be celebrating their birthday on the cruise. Sarah will be 10 by then (where does the time go?!) and Megan will be 12. She'll just miss the teens! Oh well, that will come with the next cruise, I suppose. It's actually her "fault" that we are becoming cruise addicts: she made a wish on the Magic last summer that we would take a Disney cruise every year! :wizard:

Well, I am looking forward to the planning for the next 17 months! The girls are excited. Megan was complaining that it is "over 500 days" until the cruise!

Chris,

Just mapquested LV to SF and it comes up 568 miles, airport to airport. Driving the speed limits, they say just over 8 1/2 hours.

Just checked, LAX-PHX, then LAS-SFO, would be about $190 per person. Each flight is only about 1:30 long. It would save you a ton of time.

Just LAS-SFO would be about $120 each. Again, only 90 minutes of travel time. Plus, the flight that comes up at that price is at 7:00 p.m., so you could take it the second day you are in Vegas (only 1 night there). Might provide you more time in SF.

You could reverse your trip and drive the coast first, then go to LV/Grand Canyon and then back to LA. The air from SFO-LV-LAX would be around $190 as well.

Many options out there.

What would the cost be to switch your flight to arrive in LV instead of LAX?

Beth,

Welcome to the DIS and the B.O.B. :welcome:

As we told Matthew, please just jump in anywhere and start posting. Don't worry if the current topic doesn't interest you or seems personal among the posters, just start a new one. One thing we all have in common here is we love Disney and getting to know each other.

This is a great group of DISers and they'll become good friends before the cruise. :thumbsup2

If you have any questions, ask away.

Beth,

Welcome! We're so glad you and your DH found us!

I'm Jen, and I will be cruising with DH Pete, and our DS Thomas, who will be 6 1/2.

Please jump right in and start chatting - we're a pretty lively bunch, but don't hesitate to start us off on a new topic!

Also, click on the orange logo at the bottom of my siggie - it will take you to a website one of our cruisers has set up, and it has info on the cruise, DIStag, dining, logos, and more!

I'd chat more but I'm on lunch! Bye...and welcome again!

I think it may have been due to the weather Cass. We had to go up as tandem due to the wind that day to make us heavy enough. They probably stayed well clear of the boat due to the gusts.

The toe dipping was fun! I think it started with the pair of brothers that went first. We were planning on tandem anyway, but a lighter woman on our boat "had" to because of winds...so it wasn't the winds that prevented it...I think we just had a pair of fun loving hosts! Megan and I only got our toes dipped twice!

Looked back and realized how far I had come from the post! Of course, this is regarding parasailing at Castaway Cay and my husband's great photo!

(Married to Epcot_Va, btw!)

Thanks Bendy, however because were trying to "DO" California in 8 days were just so limited to time...

Can we "DO"

Six Flags

ALL IN 8 DAYS?....:rolleyes1

Six Flags is a MUST - the coasters are fab:hyper:

We did the helicopter thing - well worth it :thumbsup2

It took all day when we drove from San Fran to Los Angeles last year, and that was motorway all the way.:worried:

Yep - we did the drive between L.A. and San Fran - its an ALL DAY drive.

The map would be great thanks.....We land at LAX,some daft get booked LAX instead of flying into Vegas....:rolleyes1 It would have made the trip far simpler, kids can't wait and poor wife thinks it's "just down the road".....:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl2:

If we don't get everything done it just gives us an excuse to comeback and do it all again another time.....:rolleyes1

Why dont you take an internal flight? We flew from L.A to Vegas - its real quick and would give you so much time back.

Welcome Beth - its a great bunch of people on here - chat away!

Chris - a little morbid maybe, but if you wanted to visit Walt Disney's grave I have a map of the cemetry. We did it years ago. Its quite easy to find with the map. I have photos, but they arent digital and we threw our scanner away when we moved:rolleyes1

Are you doing Alcatraz? Its brilliant - make sure you book tickets online though - theres always a big queue at the booth.

A friend of Neils was in Disneyland Paris last weekend. He started looking at the blocks on the floor with peoples names on to see if he could spot one from England. The first one he found was ours! - out of the thousands there he found ours :rotfl2: - how spooky is that!

http://mail.google.com/mail/?attid=0.1&disp=emb&view=att&th=11a2bc5c48149240

He didnt even know we had one!

We got it on the 5th anniversary of the park - the day they started selling them so we're real close to all the posh people like Roy Disney.:lmao:

You're braver than me! - I was squeeling like a baby when I first went up:rolleyes1 . Thats an amazing photo Matthew took.:thumbsup2 We'd all love to see more piccies of your cruises - it keeps us all going til next October!

Oooooh! - just noticed - page 100 already - anyone would think we're a chatty bunch:rotfl2:

Page 100 of thread number 7... chatty???... not at all! I only spent an hour or so trying to catch up from my husband's first post!

BTW... I love chatty people. I look forward to chatting. But due to the time it took to set up my account and profile, find the correct thread, skim through the posts... well, I now have to get back to other things! (But first, I'll take a look at the link to the cruise page!)

I just had a lovely dinner.

I had chicken, cauliflower and

I cooked red cabbage in honey water - anyone ever tried it? - its georgous and sweet.

Roasted butternut squash and carrots in EVOO and garlic.

With this cold I needed something with lots of taste cuz my tastebuds have gone on strike!

Welcome Beth.
Geez its been bad weather here today, now i know why we never holiday in England. :(
Its great here in Devon but everything is based on outdoor activities and what do you do when it is p**ing down all day.
Roll on coming to America.:thumbsup2

Print the first post out - I use it as a cheat sheet to learn everyones names.;)

Have a great day:goodvibes
