We cruised on RCCL first, on their smallest ship. It was about 300 ft shorter than the Magic/Wonder! The first few days on the Magic, I kept losing track of the forward and midship elevators. On the Nordic Empress there was only forward and aft, so I would think I was almost out our room (5522) when we were only midship(passing the mid ship elevators).
We had a great time. Although, I never went in the pool on RCCL. The seas were choppy the whole week on sea days and the pool was closed. There was no alternate dining areas...ie no fast food. There were times when I was hungry!
The rooms were tiny as well. Here is a pic of our room.

When we boarded the Magic we were blown away by the room size, the alternate dining options, the level of service, and of course as you said, the shows blew RCCL out of the water!
Our CD on the Nordic Empress was a phony snob too! He said the same things every night and we saw him in Grand Cayman, we said "hey there's Chris our CD." He gave us a cheap smile and kept walking. Andy (Ciao for now) on the Magic was a great CD and my parents said he was the best they ever had on 4 cruises. Too bad he got fired shortly after our cruise.
How things have changed. Here is our cabin on the Independence:

for me,
for you.
- 1 month closer to the Magic!
