10/24/09 Bash on the Boat (I'm With BOB) Thread #12

I had such a busy weekend that I have not had a chance to get caught up on the board. The Twilight series was written for teenage girls about a vampire named Edward. Even though the market was teenage girls my friends and I (we are the 40 something crowd) have really enjoyed the books too. The movie is coming out soon and the guy who played Cedric Diggory HP is playing Edward. Your daughter would love them. The first one is Twilight, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn, Midnight Sun. Some of the books are written from the girls point of view and some are from the boys point of view. I think the author is Stephanie Meyer? I hope you enjoy

I started reading the Harry Potter books because a co-worker said they were good. She at least had the excuse that she was reading them with her kids!:goodvibes I can't remember if I starte before or after Megan was born. But I do know that she definitely wasn't reading!:rolleyes1

I'll check out the Twilight series. I'll let her get through Harry Potter. She also just became interested in reading A Series of Unfortunate Events. I got 5 of them on trade in credit at a used book store. I'll have to see what credit I can get after I go through the crate of books in the basement.... although I will probably keep half of those. I like to re-read books, you know!

I may have some piccies - I'll have a look. I have 2 large cabinets full. My most rare is the cinderellas dress where the mice are making it. Paid a fortune for that piece:rolleyes1

I actually bought furniture with my budding collection in mind initially. I found a wall unit at IKEA with a section with glass and wood doors. We started buying slowly...piece by piece. Then they discontinued it and we had to hurry to complete it. In the last 2 years, we bought 2 tall narrow cabinets just for them...and still use the original space!

You can see one of the cabinets on the right. The other is exactly the same - full! Ignore the hamster cage and little tree - thats just the tree for in the dining room. Our main one is 8ft tall

Curious - are these books, how should I say this, appropriate for teen girls? I have heard the first one is very sensual - not that there is sex, but very sensual. As an English teacher, I get asked a lot, and I have not read this series.

This would be part of the reason I want to read them first. While there was a bit of controversy over Harry Potter and the magic in them, they were very much acceptable in other respects for tweens and teens to read (and us grown-ups too!) They did get darker and a bit more violent as they went on, but the characters and their target audience were getting older, too.

As for Twilight... I'll have to investigate since my daughter isn't even a teen yet. But I do know that once she is, I may not be able to censor everything she reads... my mom couldn't!:rolleyes1

A blast from the past....DH here.

Hope everyone is doning well?

Just popping in to say hello, and we cannot believe it has been a year allready.

HI SCOTT!!!!! Say hi to Carrie for me and big  for all of ya!

Yeay!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

The crockpot is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets....I'm a working mom, so I love throwing something in the crockpot in the morning and coming home to a cooked meal!

Here's my easiest crock pot recipe:

Super Easy Chicken

5-6 boneless,skinless chicken breasts
1 1/2 c. chicken broth
1 packet dry italian dressing mix (the packet you'd buy if you were going to mix up your own italian salad dressing)

Put in the chicken breasts, sprinkle in the seasonings and pour in the chicken broth.

Cook at least 7-8 hours on low. Easy, low fat and makes a nice, flavorful chicken breast.

I also like to do pot roast in the crockpot....I usually buy a seasoning packet, and toss in the beef roast, baby carrots and potatoes....
Made a roast carrots and celery in the crock for dinner tonight. Have you used the crock liners? Love them!

OOOHHHHHH, can I be adopted too? I could get used to calling him big daddy!:rotfl2: :rotfl2:
Well both of you need to stand in line as I volunteered to be Daddy Warbucks Little Orphan Annie on the PC cruise :lmao: :lovestruc

Edited to add my Friends are Out of the country.
That's the hardest thing about Rick and Heather living on the other side of the pond, don't get to talk much especially with the 8 hr time difference. I never ever thought in my life that I would have friends that lived in Britain, and to think it is all because of DCL and the DIS. I think Sean put it best when he said that if they lived near each other they would be the friends that we get together and have dinner with once a week.
Miss you my British sis! :sad1:

There's a reason it's called super easy chicken!

Another good crockpot meal is beef stew....need to look up my recipe for that. And, I have a recipe for beef tips which is also good....I will try to post those later this week.

Also, before I forget - reynolds makes "slow cooker liners" that are basically plastic bags you like the crockpot with and then toss after cooking - makes cleanup a breeze!
Oops pulled an Andy and didn't read through..... Please post all the crock recipes you want, I love my crock. In fact I even bring it camping, which we are doing this weekend.

We bought DD Twighlight over the weekend. She has been talking about it non stop and we found it at Target for her. She is trying real hard to read it since she is barely on a 4th grade level. We are going to try and find it on CD at the library so she can read along with it.

How old is she???

My problem early on was finding books to challenge Megan that were content appropriate. I think she read the first Harry Potter when she was in 3rd grade. (She turns 11 in 1 week from today - since it's after midnight!) She used to love reading...until she had to read for school. Last year was especially hard. She had to read a certain number of books and in specific categories as well. So, she always fussed about having to read. She's a little better this year, but she still wants to be on the computer instead!

Oh... writing this just made me realize: 1 year and 3 days until BOB!!!!

She's 15 but has a severe learning disability so the processing of what she is reading is difficult, but she is determined to read it. She got it on Saturday and was excited that she was almost at chapter 2 tonight.

Well, the rest of the house is sleeping (as it should be at this late ...er..early??? hour) so I guess I will get myself to bed now.

Good night to the west-coasters!

Becky, I know what you mean about friends across the way. We hit it off with Sean and Cath immediately and found lifelong friends. Just wish they lived a little closer. We are working on that though.:rotfl:

As you have probably guessed I can't sleep.:confused3 Haven't been to sleep yet and the alarm will be going off in 3 1/2 hours.:scared1: I'm not sure I will function at work tomorrow.:sad2:

Is that up already?

:rotfl: No it was from last year:rotfl:

Hi there:goodvibes - nice to see you back on here. This time last year we were all boarding the Magic......:sad1:

Happy Anniverary Mike and Robin!!

Happy Brithday Jen!!!

Hi Carrie:goodvibes

And I complain about having to pay more than $100 to fly to Orlando.

 You're kidding right? It costs us that in petrol to get to the airport and just buy a brekkie before we board:sad2:

I wish we lived closer:sad2:

Someone needs to remind me of this next year. I will get it done at Disney the day before the cruise. We always get his haircut there. He got his first haircut there 1 1/2 ago.
