Mike, I am giving up pork. Not every Catholic has to. :rotfl:
Ave,
isn't that a very free interpretation of lent? According to my knowledge catholics are not allowed to eat any meat for 40 days, only fish is permitted. And NO alcohol!!! But I guess that stuff you Americans call beer doesn't count :teeth: :rotfl2:

I made a contract with another cellfon-provider. I'm going to get a brandnew camarafon with a 2 Megapixel-camera :earseek: My first digicam had only 1.3 Megapixel!! And it also has an integrated mp3-player with up to 1 Gigabyte memory, which will come in handy when we're jogging or inline-skating. And I will even be able to keep my old number.

 :cheer2: :cake: Happy Birthday Reneé :cake: :cheer2:

:bday: Hope you have a magical day! :bday:

We have the guide channel also, but it takes too long to look at. Much faster to surf and decide on the fly. Mike

Pete,
I already found some info about the Boston Zoo. We also learned that they have a sick giraffe :sad2: , which made Anja sad as those gentle giants are her favourite animals.

Folks,
I have only three entries so far for the CruzLetter :sad2:
Please send your input ASAP. There's no need to send articles according to Pulitzer Prize standards ;) So far I've received family portraits from Mary and Michele and a very funny joke from Marianne.
Following Mike's request I will do a portrait of Frankfurt, which will hopefully result in some of you eventually coming to Good Ole Germany - Although I'd understand if you want to wait for a more favourable Euro/Dollar-exchange-rate ;)

I just found out that I have 500 Megabytes of storage place on the web on my new provider's server, which means that very soon I'll upload lots of pictures for everyone to see and download.

Happy Birthday Renee :bday: :cake:

Eric, Here is the official policy regarding what we Catholics are required to do during lent. "For Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening—depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.

Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat."

Worse comes to worse on Friday just bless the meat and declare it fish.

We have 2 copies of "Cathchism of the Catholic Church" which each child received after graduating from Catholic HS and it doesn't even have listed the requirements for lent fasting and abstinence. It certainly isn't like "The Baltimore Catechism" I grow up with. One of the funniest books I ever read regarding the Catholic Church is "Growing Up Catholic". It is like an Erma Brodbeck book for all Catholics born before Vatican II.

I didn't realize that Tupac and Elton had done a song together. Must be the current trend Rappers and other artists. Tim McGraw has a song with I think Nelly. Liked the song. Thanks for sharing. I listen to AOL music alot.

I forgot to comment on Amazing Race. I was disappointed that Kendra and Freddy won, I was so hoping it would have been Kris and Jon. Now anxious for AR 7 to start on March 1.

Thanks for the info, Nancy.
I checked that out on the web and to my surprise it is handled the same way by catholics over here. It's the eastern-orthodox church which still has those strict rules for lent.
Although I'm not religious I find the topic very interesting from a philosophical and intellectual point of view. As a teen I was member of a catholic youth group in the Frankfurt Cathedral for about seven years and spent many, many nights with the priest responsible for the group discussing about 'God and the world'. And coincidentally I did a lot of my basic training as a paramedic in a hospital staffed by catholic nuns. And last but not least I've been a member of St John's Ambulance service now since 1986, which belongs to the protestant church.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RENEE'

Hope you are having a nice day!!! :cake::bday::cake:

Nancy: Great job on setting the record straight about meat during Lent. What you posted is almost verbatim what was in our Sunday bulletin last week! Last Friday we had delicious rib-eye steaks. The fact was I defrosted them to serve on Wednesday but John had an emergency and never made it home for dinner so I saved them for Thursday. Then on Thursday he had a big catered lunch at his office and there was so much food left over we had that for dinner. On Friday I looked at the steaks and it was either cook them that evening or toss them because I couldn't keep them defrosted any longer. I rationalized that it was a bigger sin to waste good food than to eat meat on a Lenten Friday. Boy, were they good (even better than pork, Ave!)

Don't mention Baltimore Cathechism to me. 12 years of Catholic education for each of us was enough to send all our kids to public school. But I really shouldn't complain.....I had a wonderful education ( I can still diagram sentences!) and my poor parents did without a whole lot to make sure we got it. It was just those sadistic nuns I can't forget!

Happy Birthday, Renee!

Happy Birthday Renee -- Hope that it was a great one!!! :cheer2:

Thought that the final of Amazing Race was rather boring as they placed exactly how they left. I was hoping for Kris and Jon. The next one should be interesting with Amber and Rob from Survivor.

Does anyone have a guide book on teenagers? DS (18) came home last night was actually ok -- today we went to a play (Da Kink in Da Hair ?) and he was awful with the attitude. Ugh. When do they become human again, all the time???

Over here we're getting prepared for your President: He will visit Mainz and Wiesbaden on 02/23, which will lead to catastrophic traffic conditions as the Secret Service insists in establishing a large security perimeter. Mainz and Wiesbaden are about 20 miles due west of Frankfurt and for the duration of Bush's visit all Autobahnen, all railways, and even traffic on the rivers Rhein and Main between aforementioned cities and Frankfurt will be temporarily shut down as AirForceOne is expected to land in Frankfurt. Fortunately Anja has that day off: her hostital is situated between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden, which could result in her being stuck there. My company is fortunately located south of Frankfurt, so I expect not to be harmed by that.
Most of us see it as an important signal that we're the first country he's going to visit during his second term. It shows that we're going back to normal after the bad vibes of last two years - hopefully.
Nevertheless many people over here are quite mad due to all the inconviences, but I know from friends in Denver that they had to go through the same shortly before the election when Bush campaigned there- That's life, I guess ;) But there's still hope that he will land at Ramstein AirForceBase, which would calm down things a lot.

Meat always tastes better on Friday's during lent. You just have to remember to bless it first and all is forgiven.

Jeanne--- How is the knee?

Fionna-- I think my 22 yr old son is finally coming around. The hair is no longer dyed black, the piercing are less noticable, he hasn't had a tattoo in over a year and I am getting less attitude from him. Of course all of the above could be attributed to the new girlfriend or the fact that he is starting to go for interviews for his internship for new semester. What ever it is, he has become a much nicer person. DS#2 who will be 21 seemed to come around earlier. He was my problem child during elementary to jr high years. Plus once they are off to college you don't have to deal with them daily that maybe that is why things seem better.

Eric-- Since Pres Bush visited PA so much during the campaign, there were numerous times we encountered the same situation. The one Friday I had a terrible time getting home from work because of all the road blocked off. I do hope that relations between the 2 countries improve. 7 years with a Catholic youth group, will qualify you as an honorary Catholic.

I woke up with a cold and sore throat this morning. So don't think I will be going to the gym, since I can hardly breath. It is the first cold I had all winter. So I am waiting for the cold medicine to kick in.

Have a good day everyone.

Nancy
