My DS is 11 - will be 12 in Feb. Since he has 2 older brothers, he is already more into "teen" things than action figures and Legos (sad, but true). The interests in this age group vary widely, but neither my DS nor his friends plays with action figures anymore.
Some items on his list are new headphones (Sony brand that wrap around the back of the head) - they run about $14; lots of CDs - Green Day, Weird Al has a hilarious new one out; accessories for I-pod Nano (or other MP3 player if he has one) - charger, case, ITunes gift card, etc.
My DS is not athletic but would probably enjoy Nerf items. Board games are good - I'm getting him the new Turbo Yahtzee and the electronic Deal or No Deal board game. We have 20Q and that is a huge hit! The new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is on all 3 of my boys' lists. He likes to read and I'm getting him the Bartemaus(sp?) trilogy and he's asked for some Stephen King books too.
Gift cards he'd love to receive: Best Buy/Circuit City, Target, local movie theater, even Wal-Mart. Hope this helps!
