1 Transfer limit for multiple contracts w/same use year

Hi,

We learned the hard way today that Disney limits the ability to do multiple transfers across multiple different contracts if they have the same use year. For example we have a Dec 2015 contract for BLT and a Dec 2015 contract for VWL. Disney considers them part of the same member ID and allows just 1 transfer between the two. We had thought we'd be allowed 1 transfer for each contract.

So the question is: What could I do to 'separate' my two contracts and have them part of a different member ID so I could do transfers for each? Would I have to change the legal names on the contract?

Many thanks!

It's always been per membership. You apparently have a master contact and an add-on. Those are under the same membership, so one transfer per use year per membership, either into or out of your account, but not both in the same use year.

AFAIK, you need different use years to have totally separate memberships. There are pros and cons to having different memberships. Be sure the pros for you outweigh the cons before you proceed to separate your contracts.

Maybe someone else knows if you can change the legal title on one of your contracts and then get another membership number. I'm not sure what would happen in that case.

Adopt a point strategy that doesn't involve transfers, you will be glad you did.

Only Disney knows their security policy if you change the name on one of the contracts.

I am not sure what your issue is because you state the concern as being able to do multiple transfers "across" your multiple different contracts. If you are talking about transferring points from one of your contracts to another of your contracts in the same use year then that is an acitivity that (a) cannot occur at all, and (b) has absolutely no reason to occur. Since all the contracts are under one member number, you can mix them together, without any transfer, to do any reservation; if the points are from different resorts, you cannot mix them for a single reservation at one resort until seven months out but that would be true even in a transfer situation.

If instead, you want to be able to transfer points to members other than those in your membership, then the only way to turn your one transfer per use year into two would be to transfer one of the contracts, via deed, Disney's waiver of ROFR, and a real estate closing (and thus for a cost), to someone other than the named owners on the contract. If you did that, the contracts would get different member numbers but keep the same use year. It may be possible to do that within the same family such as transferring a husband and wife contract to just the husband, but what I do not know is whether Disney would challenge that activity if it is just designed to accomplush a new membership number. You would also get the disadvantages of having two member numbers such as not being able to mix the contracts together to make a single reservation unless you actually do a transfer from one to the other. I am not sure you really want to incur the cost, hope Disney does not complain, and then deal with the two membership issues in the future just to get one additonal transfer right.

I agree with drusba. If the two contracts are the same member number and same use year, then there is no reason, and no way, to transfer between them.

However, Disney does restrict transfers to one per use year, either in or out. So, if you actually have two memberships and try to transfer from one to the other, that uses up the one transfer limit for both memberships.

We would be looking to transfer to other members and not between our own contracts. Thanks for the replies

IIRC the wording is a little open and could easily be construed as applying to any member no matter how many master contracts they have though so far they've applied to it per master contract. It sounds like you have one master with all under one number. In that case it's one in OR out per UY. What you could do to separate them would be to retitle them so they are different and each has their own master. Maybe take a name off or add a name. In that case they should be separated though I guess it's possible they still wouldn't. If one were willing to go to this extreme then I'd talk to member admin to be sure this method would separate them. You'd gain the extra wait list and 1 additional transfer (in OR out) per UY but you'd lose the ability to use the points seamlessly at 7 months out from different resorts or at 11 months if the same resort. You'll have to decide what's reasonable but to me it'd depend on what you're ultimately trying to accomplish and the size of the contracts along with the total number of points involved. If you own 500 each at 4 resorts I probably would seriously consider it. If you own 150 each at 2 or 3, I wouldn't fool with it. Assuming income is the goal, I'd just rent instead of transfer or sell off part or all of what you have rather than doing this for most situations. IMO it can be easier to rent than transfer anyway if done appropriately and you open yourself to a much larger market.
