# 1 Billboard AND Country Album - Dixie Chicks

I also noticed that they're not getting much air time. Of course, when I read your post, I realized that we're probably talking about the same radio stations! (Northern Ky!)

I'm ashamed that people who feel that free speech is wrong are from America

Well, I have to admit, I am not a country fan so I never really heard any of their music. My daughter was watching the Billboard countdown and I told her I thought the DC had the song at #1 this week. She said, yeah, I think that's who's at #1 this week. I stopped everything I was doing to listen to their song and I was actually pleasantly surprised. They really sounded nice and I do believe pop fans will welcome them as I feel that most aren't as hard core conservative as many country fans are.

I still don't believe they should have said what they did. Not because I feel they're unpatriotic or that I wish to suppress their voice. I just feel that people pay a heck of a lot of money to see them in concert and those people go to be entertained and to get away from the daily grind. I guess I just don't understand why they would want to offend any of their fans who may feel differently about world events. As stated earlier though, I feel they have every right to speak their mind, I'm just not so convinced that they should have.

They'll be more than welcome on the pop scene though.

My favorite lines in the whole song

Dixie Chicks said:
I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.

I like country music. I like the Dixie Chicks, Reba, Gretchen and Toby. I'm against this war, support our troops and was patriotic before being patriotic was trendy. I'm pro-choice, pro-gay rights and pro-gun ownership.

I think for myself. And I am proud of that.

Their newest video played on Viva in Germany today, which is a German music station (Now owned by MTV) playing contemorary rock and pop. The album will be published 06/16 over here and I guess it may make the charts.
I 'discovered' the DC in 1999 during one of our USA-vacations and liked them immediately. Later they became popular over here with their part in the OST of 'The Runaway Bride' and even more popular when they spoke out against Bush, they then made it even into several TV-shows. AO I assume what the lost in revenue in teh US, they at least partially compensated over here.

Billboard just announced that "Taking the Long Way" was #1 once again for the week ending last Sunday.

Gee...wonder if it has anything to do with only 20-some percent of people disagreeing with them about being ashamed of Shrub? ;)

On the other hand, this article says that ticket sales for their tour are way below what was expected. It sounds like dates will be cancelled, or moved to smaller venues.

So enough people still like their music to make their CD a success. But there's not enough people that can stand the sight of them as would be required to make their tour a success. ;)

To be fair, all concert ticket sales are in a bit of a slump. It is not at all uncommon for concert venues to be juggled around and tweaked. That's a common practice in the industry. It happens all the time to the "big names". It just usually isn't "newsworthy". If anyone thought the tour wouldn't be a success at all, it certainly would have been pulled by now.

The article says that "Ticket counts for the 20-plus arena shows that went on sale last weekend were averaging 5,000-6,000 per show in major markets and less in secondaries, according to sources contacted by Billboard. Venue capacities on the tour generally top 15,000." One show was cancelled, and three more may be. That can't be common for a group that's #1 in the country, can it?

Some people say that their CD sales indicate that only 20% of America disagrees with their opinions. So I say that only filling a third of the seats at their shows means that people can't stand the sight of them. It seems logical to me.

Don't forget all those radio stations that are refusing to play their songs in these cities. Any station not playing the song likely doesn't promote their concert dates.

Hard to sell tickets for a specific date when nobody will promote the event.

The dates in rest of the country can take the sting off these dates in the article.

They certainly are not the #1 group in the country, as I'm sure you well know, unless record sales for a few weeks in the year automatically makes them that. Some people love them, some can't stand the sight of them, but to generalize and call their concert tour a failure based on one article and before it's even been finalized, is not correct. Some venues will be disappointing to them, I'm sure, but there are many factors involved, as Cardaway above has mentioned. Logic is sometimes subjective.

So your saying that promoters scheduled concerts in cities where radio refused to play their CD? It doesn't seem like something a promoter would do. Got a source for that?

You found that story so I'm sure you can find more. It's well reported that even the stations in major markets like Houston refuse to play their songs. Of course the promoter would still schedule a date in a huge city like Houston. Just a smaller venue like the article said.
