HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL!!

Remember: Life is uncertain. Eat your dessert first!

Hi John I asked my son your question and he said it's a street truck thats built for the track. He actually hasn't raced it yet as he is still rebuilding it. But said he doesn't think he would change the oil after ever race. He said he is only running 9/5 compression. Me :confused3 lol.
Ronny wants to know if you race your boat? Also do you run it in salt or fresh water and how often do you run it?

Race our boat? ... ha ha ha ... no, it's just that when boating you generally use about 75% power all the time, whereas in your car you might use 75% power to get up to speed, then maybe only 25%. So I thought he might have some insight into what I believe is going to be a real problem, first with boats and race/street engines, then eventually with street-only engines. As I said, the newer cams with rollers shouldn't experience problems.

I'm just getting informed on this, so he might want to ask some of his race buddys about the reduced levels of zinc & phosphorous. For race engines only, they probably use race oil (which has plenty of both), but don't do real well in the long run (ie. street use).

If he learns anything new, please let me know. Thanks.

Happy Birthday Michael!! Hope you had a swell day and the birthday fairy brought you everything you wanted! :woohoo:

Hey Lynn,

I assume the race engine is not driven on the street, but if it is, I would be interested in what he thinks about his oil. If he only races it, then his oil probably has a lot of zinc and phosphorous (ZDDP) and he changes it after every race, which won't help me out any.

We just replaced a 1995 454 in our boat, and I suspect reduced levels of ZDDP led to the last engine's demise. (The EPA is demanding longer service life from catalytic converters, which is the reason for the reduction of ZDDP in motor oil). This is probably not a factor in modern engines with roller cams vs. what he and I have.

Thanks

:confused3 John, that is very interesting! I have a '97 boat and I have never heard that this could be an issue.Especially since we have banned all phosphorus in our county. Do you do all the winterization, oil changes yourself? We take ours in every year and I am wondering if this is somehing I should talk to our boat guy about? I would really hate to be up the river again this summer with only a paddle. :lmao:

Hi Laura,

I did change the oil, and have winterized our other boat, but let the marina winterize and store this one.

The phosphorus ban in your county most likely applies to laurdry and dish detergents but not motor oil?

With a '97 you might have roller cams rather than what I have (tappet cams). Ask your mechanic which you have. I believe roller cams will perfom fine with the reductions. Plus the marine oils are probably still fully fortified, unless they state "suitable for boats with catalytic converters" (just recently introduced into boats). But they are pretty secretive about their formulas, especially if the new and improved oil is less than desireable.

I doubt your mechanic is aware of the situation yet. Mine wasn't until he looked into it. Then he suggested racing oils, but they don't have the detergents necessary for normal use (and don't have the marine anti-corrosion package).

If you do have the tappet cams, I don't have the answer yet, but am still investigating it. Figure I have until next spring to get something worked out.

Thank you all very much for the kind birthday wishes!
Happy B-Day !

My friends are already there, Disneyland stopped letting in guests at 11:00 am..:scared1: Whoa, it must be the Rose Bowl Parade (Tournament of Roses) crowd...:dance3: Appx 80,000 people there...:crowded: Luckily we have lunch and dinner ressies at D-land for NYE.
Have a wonderful day! :flower3:

So the reservations will get you in, guaranteed, kinda like if you are staying onsite?

I'm bringing my Mac :thumbsup2, my daughter's boyfriend is driving
It's about a 6 hour roadtrip down the "5". Need to stop at our favorite "papusa" truck.:woohoo: Papusas are like flattened tamales that are round, filled with yummy goodness :goodvibes

Ressies aren't a guarantee, but having premiun AP's helps, and staying at the Grand :cloud9: Will keep you posted, and anything about "ships" I need to keep "hush-hush" from the kiddies, even though they are 13 and 20...Ah, they'll have so much fun on the ship...I think I feel a tear coming...

about 12 hours for takeoff on the road!!!

I am definately missing out on eveything here. Just trying to get caught up. Happy everything to you guys and I will be reading for a while.

Hi Sherrell,

Thread 4 has really slowed down. Looks like a good time to catch up. Might not pick up again until someone has some late-breaking Disney news to report and when some of us sail on the Dream (prior to the SSMC).

And of course around the '00th postings.
