Just have to say to all here, "Thank You". I was at the hospital gettign some tests done yeturday and I was able to "go to my happy place" and catch up on this thread and all things Disney. It made the day go by alot faster and I just wanted to say "Thank You."

I don't know if some realize this but reading these boards helps I know me when I am having a bad day or just need to get out of the work mood.

Ok Done sharing.

I was looking for an e-reader but a lot of people ask me why not just get an ipad since I don't have a laptop. I keep going back and forth. A kindle would work just fine but I'm really addicted to the disboards and pogo. :confused3

I'm addicted to Pogo too and Facebook...they have some good games too.

I already have a laptop and very happy with it. I wanted a Kindle...now when we travel...my kindle is in my purse. I have over 100 books on my Kindle right now. It's light weight. I love it!!!!:lovestruc

TiszBear....I hope that all is well with you. :grouphug: Please take care.

I hope everything is ok and it's nothing serious. I'm glad the DISboards helped pass the time for you! :thumbsup2 And I agree, reading the DISboards can turn a bad day into a better day....just daydreaming about being at WDW or on DCL. :cloud9:

We will be in WDW with friends from Oct. 29 - Nov. 5 for MNSSHP. Just yesterday though I extended our stay and got a studio for Nov. 5 and am waitlisting for the 6th so we should be here.

We're getting in midday on the 5th and staying at a 2 bedroom at kidani. Wanna meet for drinks that afternoon/evening? My folks will be there as well but they are super cool"

That sounds GREAT! We are at Kidani Nov. 5 also. Let me know Do you want to meet up at Sanaa?

How do you like the ipad? I'm debating between the ipad and Kindle. What's your take on them?

I have both and love them both. The Kindle is healthier to read at night (no backlight). Rule is no LCD's etc 1-2 hours before bedtime. Bad for your sleep cycle :)

Also the Kindle has tons of water proof cases out there, so easy to take in the bath, to the beach, to pools, etc.

Downside: no backlight means you need an external light (there are plenty of 'book' lights for it).

The iPad is NOT quite there as a laptop replacement, but for tons of games (kids LOVE the iPad have to steal it back often) TONS of productive apps, watching Netflix instant play on it is awesome (for netflix members - unlimited instant play), email is awesome on it and browsing the web is really fun on it. I wound up purchasing an apple blue tooth keyboard so I can type faster on it than using the on screen. The blue tooth keyboard is tiny too so really easy to pack it up with the ipad (about 1/2 the size of a regular keyboard but still normal key layout).

Now that aside, the iPad is quickly becoming a laptop replacement and I beleive the update due in November will put it there (software update - free to iPad owners).

So, I use both. There is a Kindle app for the iPad and for the iPhone. They all sync through what Kindle calls 'whispernet' when you bookmark a page (automatically as long as you are online with your device). So that is REALLY neat. I can be on my kindle in a bath, later pull the book up on the larger iPad, then next day at work during an annoying break / meeting / etc I can pull it up on my iPhone; all synced to where I last left off.

Don't know if this helps, any details you want just ask!

Heck to the yeah! It's our first time at Kidani so it will be exciting. I'll pm you my cellie so we can synchronize swatches when there. Not like we're not going to "talk" before then. Name the time and we will be there (probably without the bells on).

Disney happy feelings! Reading helps me, posting often helps me a bit more. That is why I try and post so much when I am on! Makes me forget about the stressors and such.

It's awesome to hear about this being your place to go ohmmmm, ohhmmmm. This really is such a good hearted group of people it's so neat. :goodvibes

Thanks for all the info. Maybe I'll wait until the new update for iPad comes out to decide. What is the difference between a laptop and the iPad? Is it just the software available i.e. word, excel, etc.?

There is really no way to compare these two devices ................

Kindle is ONLY a electronic Book at $139.00

And

IPAD is a Computer "Type" device :upsidedow that starts at $499.00 & goes up over $999.00...........

Both are very good Devices at what they were develop for ......... It is kind of like asking the question "Balcony" or "Inside" Stateroom on Disney Cruises ......... Your AWAYS going to get two different answers.

:cool2:

The best thing to do is go to an Apple store and play with the IPAD and Apple Computers ............................ It still comes back to what you want to do with the device that makes the selection process easier .............. Between my work computer - house computer and DD school computer they are very different in size - hardware and internal processing ............... it just depends on your needs ...................

I think I'll do that. Thanks.

The iPad is MUCH more simplistic than a laptop so very hard to compare. IE: a laptop can have multiple windows open and resized at once, iPad can not. You have Safari open, minimize to get to the iPad email, etc. You can still bookmark, email from Safari, etc (so most laptop features are there, just more simplified user experience). There is no 'start' button like in windows to click just app shortcuts. What makes the iPad experience is the plethora of apps covering just about ALL bases.

There is a compatible version of word (named Pages) and one for excel (named Numbers) that will read word/excel format and save in them as well.

The update in November is supposed to include multitasking as well as wireless printing support (without having to get an app to do that). Greatest thing about the app's besides the whole 'imagination is the limit' is the amount of free ones!

Swoops is totally right here, apples to oranges for comparison. Just depends on what you need. If you are planning on buying a laptop AND a kindle, I might just settle on the iPad. Now if you need a mobile system for constant productivity (connect to a workplace through your PC, etc) then a laptop would be easier.

There is VPN support and RDP support on the iPad as well though. There is no disk drive or usb drive (you can get an attachment to connect to a usb camera to offload pictures, or an attachment to connect camera memory cards for the same - to modify pictures edit email etc when out and about using a camera better than your phone). Sorry had to throw one example in there, I am a techie nut.

Swoops hit the nail on the head, get your hands dirty. Go to the apple store and pester them with questions, use the heck out of the device. The hardest thing to get used to is how simplistic it is. People who are used to windows mobile devices are used to having to dive deeper to do the same amount.

If you are just interested in an e-reader with MAYBE an interest in mobile computing, the iPad is quite an investment for a maybe vs the Kindle.

Now if you decide: 'Yes I want to browse the web and Yes I want something that deals with email well and yes I want it to be an ereader" then the iPad of course.

Edit: Just thought of this, think of the iPad as a GREAT multimedia experience with a decent laptop takeover.

As you can tell, I love both my Kindle and iPad so really can't sway you one way or another I can just pepper you with what I know on them :)

Vicki and I are going to try BLT at the 11 month mark. We are going to try and get the 3 bedroom since the whole gang is with us again. We were thinking about cruising before also but we would have no way to get Vicki's mom to the airport without us.
