04/27/11 DCL's WONDERful LA-VANCOUVER REPO ON THE WAY TO ALAKSA

We booked WDFM for day #2. Based upon the time we have in port, it is essential that we get back to the ship on time, or as part of a DCL excursion ... else ... risk the possibility of missing the ship.

How far away is WDFM from the port? I did not think t was too close?

The only other thought I had, was that if *ANYONE* has the ability to make a trip to WDFM special ... it would be DCL. I mean, is there a *chance* there could be special (undisclosed) perks? Anything is possible. We're not expecting anything ... but it WOULD be nice!

I should probably stay out of this debate. I booked shore excursions through Disney. I booked our hotel in Los Angeles the night before the cruise with Disney. I paid for all our transfers through Disney. I'm not rich by any means, but I'm going to be on vacation and don't want to stress about anything! I don't want to stress about getting checked in, getting to port, where to go, how to get there, and how to get back to the ship, or to the airport. I'm paying for peace-of-mind.
But for those who have more time and skills to make plans on their own can save a lot of money, I say go for it, and good for them!

Just a minor correction from someone who goes to Vancouver several times a year.

The tour bus you are talking about DOES NOT go to Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is where the cities of Victoria, Nanaimo, Tofino, Campbell River, etc are located. You need to take a Ferry to get to Vancouver Island. We will be stopping in Victoria on Vancouver Island with the Wonder on the way to Vancouver on this cruise. I'm pretty sure you didn't mean Vancouver Island, probably Stanley Park, but I am not 100% sure.

Granville Island is really cool and full of artisan shops. I go there at least once per year or more if I can. But it will be at the other end of the city from the Port. Another option is to hop a water taxi and visit the Lonsdale quay which is directly across the water from the port and is similar to Granville Island.

The Steam clock is within walking distance (think Main street to Toontown - maybe less) from the port. Just walk out of the port and when facing the city, turn left towards the train station and walk down the sidewalk until you walk right into the steam clock. Most Vancouverites practically ignore it now. And it is just a steam powered clock on the sidewalk - not much taller than a light standard. It is cool to see but I don't want people thinking it is something like the clock on It's a Small World in DL.

I was looking at Alcatraz on line. I think we'll be booking this one on our own. Definitely have to keep up with the new exercise program so I can feel great doing the walk on Alcatraz. I saw on the website that its the equivalent of walking up 13 flights of stairs

We are doing the Views of SF and Muir Woods for SF excursions. In Victoria, we're doing the Horse Drawn Trolley followed by afternoon tea at the Empress, which I booked myself online. It is my DD (5) and me, so I tried to pick things I thought she might enjoy. We also plan to go to the pier area in SF and maybe do the Aquarium, depending on time. It is open late though, according to the website, so we might fit it in.

I'm really getting excited. Booking excursions make it seem so much closer!

Getting more excited about trip planning now. DH booked our hotel for DL yesterday.
I was looking at Alcatraz on line. I think we'll be booking this one on our own. Definitely have to keep up with the new exercise program so I can feel great doing the walk on Alcatraz. I saw on the website that its the equivalent of walking up 13 flights of stairs

It's actually part of a double-decker bus tour, I think a hop-on, hop-off thing, good for 2 days, the bus does 4 loops, so you have choices of what you want to see, or see all if you want.

I'm thinking about a private taxi tour in Ketchikan. I've found the private tours really work well with someone with mobility issues and wants total control of snack time and bathroom breaks!!!

Nope, won't know your restaurant assignment/rotation till we board, BUT you can put in a request. If you are wanting to hit Triton's on formal night you would request the rotation that had Triton's on the 2nd night. (If the Wonder does it in the same order as the Magic, that would be PTA...Parrot Cay/Triton's/Animators Palate.)

You referenced WDFM ... which is not walking distance. I am not making excuses for anyone ... but, like I said, everything takes time, and time is money. If you are familiar with SF, there is likely no need for you to take an excursion ... much less ... one that is arranged by a third party. For those of us who don't know which bus line to take (or don't want the hassle of seeking transportation, or taking public transportation) ... excursions are indeed a viable alternative.

True, but the WDFM is two bus rides from where the ship docks. And I am familiar enough with SF that it is no problem to get there.

And I understand the need to make a profit, but if the cost of going to Alkatraz through the cruise line is more than double the cost of doing it on your own, the markup seems excessive to me.

I too, considered buyng Alzatraz tickets on my own, but would have to research transportation, and would be subject to debarkation times, which would be secondary to DCL excursions. I would not have thought to look into Sausalito ... and likely would not do so on my own. No matter, I am fine with this being included as part of the excursion ... same with the bridge.

If you don't have a strong interest in riding across the Golden Gate bridge, then here's an alternative. First, look at the DCL website and note for yourself that their description of going to Alcatraz involves walking from the ship to the ferry. Next, go to Google Maps and search 'cruise terminal san francisco'. You will see the cruise ship terminal is at pier 35, and Alcatraz tours leave from pier 33 next door. You'll save a lot of money by not having somebody escort you half a block. If you want to go to Sausalito, the ferry leaves from pier 41 - also displayed on Google maps and about three blocks away from pier 35. I expect most cruise passengers will be walking that way regardless of the ferry in order to visit Fisherman's Wharf.

Cruise lines charge $x for an alcoholic beverage ... and I know I can drive to a store to buy for much less (ooops, have to take automobile costs into consideration). At the end of the day, it's a matter of not being in your own environment, and paying for the services of others. When you look at the DCL price for the Tram in Alaska (it's an ON YOUR OWN event), you will realize they are not gouging. Of course, this could vary, depending on the excursion.

Since I don't drink alcohol, let's use the example of a restaurant. I can cook baby back ribs at home over five hours and have something better than restaurants can make for a lot less, or I can save a lot of time and spend a lot more. But gouging depends on how much more I am paying.

Paying $75 for a day in WDW may seem excessive ... it includes a LOT of time, energy and effort to put everything together ... hence the cost.

No, $75 for WDW doesn't seem excessive. To me, it seems a bit cheap compared to other theme parks. But paying $99 to get a $26 trip to Alcatraz and about a $20 trip to Sausalito seems excessive to me.

And this will be my last post on the subject. You and I obviously have very different opinions of what a fair price is. You also seem to think taking the time to get to know a destination is difficult, but I have enough leisure time - and enough desire - to want to learn these things. Before I get on an airplane I know roughly how to get from the hotel to my destination and I can quickly tell if the cabbie is taking a long route - or going in the wrong direction. I consider such information vital to personal security, and am willing to pay for this knowledge with my time.

Which one of us is right? In the case of San Francisco, probably both. You obviously have enough money that the extra money for DCL tours is no big deal; I am not as affluent. In the tourist sections San Francisco during the day, personal security information is not that necessary. Elsewhere your life can depend on it - a former coworker jumped out of a moving taxi to escape being kidnapped for ransom, ran two blocks to a safe hotel, and may have saved his own life.
