04/27/11 DCL's WONDERful LA-VANCOUVER REPO ON THE WAY TO ALAKSA

I think most of you know that my daughter Jamie is graduating from high school.

Anyway, good news to share.....she got her acceptance letter last night via email and has been accepted into Brigham Young University (they have a wonderful music/dance/theater program). She will start this fall.

Needless to say, she is very excited!

:cheer2::cheer2:CONGRATULATIONS JAMIE!!! :cheer2::cheer2:

Bird's Eye Views of Vancouver: More than 250,000 fans have descended on Vancouver for the 21st installment of the Olympic Winter Games. Streets are packed with international revelers and slopes are full of world-class athletes going for gold. But all that excitement can get a little overwhelming: so much to see and do, so little time. Fortunately, there are plenty of places in Vancouver to get away from it all and soak up some great views of the Olympic city. Here are a few of the best spots.

Less than 30 minutes by car from downtown Vancouver, Grouse Mountain and its 4,000-foot peak offers panoramic views of the city. The popular ski resort is open 24 hours a day during the Olympics and also serves as the set for NBC's Today show. The only way to get to the top of Grouse in winter is aboard the Skyride, a special gondola that travels a mile up the thickly forested mountain. At the top of Grouse is an even more spectacular vantage point: the viewing pod on top of the massive wind turbine. Known as the Eye of the Wind, Grouse Mountain offers sustainability tours that encourage guests to make a positive contribution to the planet while providing them with the most breathtaking views.

Just outside downtown Vancouver is the breathtaking Queen Elizabeth Park. The highest point within the city, the meticulously manicured park and gardens offer unobstructed views of Vancouver's skyline and the Coast Mountains beyond. The park is also home to an indoor tropical conservatory, where rainforest plants, birds and fish flourish beneath a massive acrylic dome.

Consistently rated one of the best drives in North America, the Sea to Sky highway is a rugged stretch of mountain road that connects Vancouver with the resort town of Whistler. The highway hugs the cliffs along the edge of Howe Sound, a Pacific fjord filled with rocky islands, and there are several specially designated look-out points along the way.

Good Morning Cruisers!

This week we got some snow, yesterday we had 8 - 10 inches, and it came straight down and did not blow away to Nebraska, so it really looks like we got a bit of snow! Right now it is sunny, but I do not think it will get warm enough to melt any of it.

Sounds like plans are going well, we are also enjoying the olympics and the Vancouver area - we also have a DVD for riding the bike that is a tour thru Vancouver and BC that has been fun to ride to.

Have a great week all!

Glad to see you checking in Lynn! The DVD sounds great. What is the name of it? I will add it to the "FUN" things on the first post of the thread.

DH & I decided last Monday to head to Vancouver for a few days and check out some of the Olympics. Since it was a last minute trip, we didn't have tickets for any events and instead took in a bunch of the free things happening to celebrate the Olympics.
here's a couple pictures from our time there:
me & my girls getting a picture with the Olympic Cauldron

And here's a nice shot of Canada Place where our ship will be docking next year :goodvibes

LuvBaloo, your trip looks so cool! Great history moments for your kids:thumbsup2 I'm so excited to explore Vancouver when we get there.

sdlong, thanks for posting the newsletter - so exciting!

Lynn, your bike trip sounds fun!

Shannon, KEWL Pics, I do believe I see a pair of those famous mittens.

Good Morning Cruisers!

Shannon - thanks for the pictures.

Georgie - the DVD's are done by "Bike-o-vision", there are about 27 different "tours", one that we got was Vancouver and BC. They have just filmed driving down the road in most cases, occasionally they will pan out on something interesting.

I put off the dog walk until later today, just could not face the dark, cold and wind all at the same time - later I will just have to face the cold and wind but it will be sunny! It is warmer - it was 27 degrees this morning, but with 25mph winds, the wind chill was about 2 degrees.

The wind has picked up and now it looks more like Cheyenne, with bare spots of grass visible and larger drifts of snow.

Have a great day all - after today I am back to working the early shift so will not make it back here until the weekend.

Shannon, KEWL Pics, I do believe I see a pair of those famous mittens.

Naturally, we all have the mittens :thumbsup2
They've been selling throughout Canada since last fall.
Part of the proceeds from the mittens go to supporting athletes.

Okay... still 425 days away! It seems like forever. We decided we didn't want to stay on deck 1, so called to change staterooms today. We've taken a GTY for category 9C, so I hope that works out okay.
Thus, it will be a last minute roster update for us before we sail. Warm thoughts and pixie dust to all of you, and we look forward to meeting in 425 days!
Laura

Hey Scott...I know a few people in the US that were lucky enough to receive the famous red mittens as gifts...of course "someone" laughed at me when I gave them to her but wasn't laughing when she actually had to wear them in Florida a few weeks ago....

Laura, congrats on the upgrade! It will be great to have the view and the higher deck! I hope the 425 days goes by fast!

Maybe you might be interested in some video from the Wonder today.
A Sacramento, CA tv station was doing a remote from the ship as it was in Nassau.
I would assume this is a build up to the Wonder's repositioning to the west coast.

The page is HERE.
There are 4 videos in all.

Makes me wish I were there!

I have just updated the roster. It can be seen at ROSTER
Let me know of any omissions or errors.

I apologize for not keeping up.
Been a bit pre-occupied.

I have become a fan of curling. Or at least of Cheryl Bernard.
