$0 or $1 tips?

I'm English so tipping the american way is a bit alien to me.

I had assumed that if you had bad service/fod etc you would leave no tip, but then i read that if you do this then it would just be thought that you don't tip, and that it's better to leave a $1 tip or similiar to show that you know to tip but that the service wasn't worth doing so.

Which do you do?

I will say, before this thread gets closed, that instead of suffering through bad service the diner should seek out a manager to correct the service situation while it's being experienced.
