Would you be open to telling them that if they complete their work and follow directions, you will give them a special "Six Seven" problem? Maybe make a word problem where the answer 7, R6 and they work together to use different strategies to solve. Are they doing partial quotients yet? If they keep goofing off, then they have to wait until next time for the special problem. This way, they are still working on math but you get a well-behaved group.

Not a bad idea, but my kids likely wouldn’t see more math as an incentive. I’ve been keeping a stack of our classroom money on the table and silently rewarding the ones who don’t say it when others do. A few have caught on and will try to control themselves, but usually give into temptation at some point. Baby steps…

This has probably been said already. There isn't a generation to ever grace the planet that doesn't have it's on thing. Right now it's 6/7. It's their own thing. When I was in college the phase was "Would you Believe" or "Missed it by that much". There are a whole lot of thing to be concerned about in the world today, 6/7 isn't one of them. My parents was "Hubba Hubba". My daughters was "Don't worry, be happy".

Remember the Friends era? Could we BE any more annoying? RIP, Matthew Perry.

Yes, exactly!! Up until the last 5 years, I've worked with kids of varying ages my whole adult life and they all follow these trends and I honestly just roll with it usually. On Halloween, my kids (they are 22 and 14) and I were hanging out in the garage, passing out candy, and this sweet, polite, respectful group of younger teenagers came up the driveway. Up until that point I had been instructing kids to take a handful, or for the little kids I'd tell them to count out a certain number of treats from the bowls, but something about this group of well-behaved teens unleashed my inner chaos gremlin and I deliberately asked them to "take 6 or 7". The reaction was great! Made my night!
