How about a QOTD?

Are you planning any other summer overnight getaways for your family?

Maybe a trip to a cottage, a couple of days in the big city, or an overnighter to visit friends or relatives who live afar?

Or is your Disney trip your sole summer expedition?

In July we are driving 8 hours one way to drop our kids off at my BIL & SIL's, sleep over nite, then back home for a week sans kids ::yes::, returning the following weekend for our annual family reunion staying there for 4 days. Also in July DD9 will be going to camp for a week - I hope.

Our DS is working full time all summer (he has been blessed with a FABULOUS job in the youth department at our local YMCA) so during July and August its not unusual for him to put in 50 hour weeks with the various summer camps they offer. He loves his job and adores the big paycheques, so he's not too eager to give up his work time for lengthy family fun getaways (our Orlando trip excluded, of course!....but that's why we take the last week of August to travel, as enrolment numbers for camp for that final week of summer are always less than during the earlier weeks, meaning staffing requirements are less).

Soooo....that said, we will be squeezing in one more short trip over our Canada Day long weekend (from June 28th to July 1st). DH's birthday is June 28th, so its nice timing there and the first day of summer camp is July 2nd, so the timing is perfect for Jake as well. We will spend one night in Toronto (staying downtown at the Delta Chelsea to take in some shopping and city excursions) then we are moving on to Cambridge for two nights to visit the African Lion Safari and a local waterpark. Nothing big, but nice for us to get away and enjoy some leisure time before the busy-ness of summer hits.

Otherwise, the rest of our adventures will be day trips to the beach or something similar.

We have to visit the in-laws at least once. Five of us and our dog in their 2 bedroom ranch house, MIL with OCD... not my idea of fun. She insists we visit over July 4th for nephew's birthday, even though none of these relatives have so much as sent a card for our kids' birthdays. DH is the ungrateful son who moved 3 1/2 hours away instead of the house down the street, so she gives him the silent treatment if we don't go. They are already mad at us for not inviting them to go to WDW with us.:rolleyes2.
OK, rant over. Sorry about that.

We just came home from a long weekend trip to montana, my girls will spend a few weekends with their nana at the lake. Other than that our big trip is WDW 17 days lol. Dh tried to tell me it was only two weeks then was surprised when i added it all up!

lol, I think your inlaws and mine would get along famously. Lots of similarities there :scratchin . So I feel your pain! ::yes::

Hope it goes well for you nonetheless!

QOTD??

Since planning is all done (Pigletto, hold out babe!) let's have a off topic QOTD.

Who do you remember this Memorial Day? You Northern Disers too.

I remember my Dad who was in the Army Reserve between the Korean war & Vietnam.

I always think of my Uncle Keith who was in the Army and served in Korea as well. He survived it but we lost him to cancer when I was 8. :(

We're another family that is pretty much always on the go. We will take a trip up to Michigan to see my wife's family and drop the kids off for the summer in mid-June. The kids get to stay with the in-laws and all of my wife's family that is up there for a good portion of the summer. We'll return with a friend's kid that will be staying with us as well. Not long after that we'll take a weekend trip to San Antonio to visit some friends and celebrate our anniversary. Then July should just be relaxing and in early August we'll pick the kids back up and then we're off to Disney!

Do you fly or drive? That's a long trip from Texas!

I <3 the dells! We went there on our honeymoon :)

Its such a cheesy little vacation spot (none of the "polish" of Orlando, that's for sure) but we had sooo much fun there. All sorts of quirky little things to do and some fantastic waterparks :thumbsup2 . My boys would love to go back someday.....but hopefully next time, we'll fly into Milwaukee and then drive from there to the Dells. We drove the full way from Ontario to Wisconsin that summer, and if I ever see another Trivial Pursuit question, it will be too soon :lmao: .

That said, travelling across the states were some fun times that will be fondly remembered. Road trips really are a special kind of experience!

We drive. It's about 20 hours and we typically do it straight through. It's actually the same distance from here to Michigan, Disney and Las Vegas. :) We'll pack up 90% of the car the night before, load up around 5 or 6am and then hit the road. We have snacks and sandwiches in the car, iPads loaded up with movies for the kids and we just cruise. This year we've got someone at the house watching the dog so we don't have to take her, which is nice since she takes up a lot of space (100lb Golden Retriever) and doesn't care much for car rides anyways. If we leave early in the morning like that then the drive is pretty easy. In the summer we have more daylight and it's easier to stay awake. Eventually I'll switch it over to my wife to drive and I'll take a short nap and then I'll take back over and get us the rest of the way there. Last year when we went to Disney it was a little rough because we didn't leave until 3pm so most of our driving was at night. My wife and I were a little beat when we pulled into AoA but then the Disney energy hit and we were awake again. :thumbsup2

I wait ALL YEAR LONG for summer vacations so in addition to our adults-only Disney trip in August, I am planning:

-annual Weirs Beach, NH trip (parents rent a house so we mooch off them)

-Newport, RI - girls/adults only weekend

-Old Orchard, ME - weekend with kids and my sister

If I don't have any multiple trips to look forward to, I'm all

As a matter of fact I am leaving Thursday to go to a wedding in Connecticut. It will be a 7 hour drive but I'm going to stretch it into a few day trip. Other then that Disney is the big vacation this year

:worship: You are heartier folks than we are. I couldn't do that long of a drive without an overnight stop to regain my sanity!! (and I only have ONE child :rotfl: )

:lmao: It's old hat now. Last year we did 4 trips to Michigan and 1 to Disney. 1 of the Michigan trips I drove by myself because my wife had gone up earlier with a friend and the kids. Just the dog and I for 1200 miles. :thumbsup2

We're doing a day trip to Kansas City for my son's 1st birthday mid June, and will spend a few days back home in Oklahoma over the 4th of July weekend to see family. My 4 year old would gladly ride in the car all day (she rode 4 hours each way for me to see my original obgyn when we moved in the middle of my pregnancy, just for a 30 minute appointment!) but DS has loathed car rides since day 1. I would love to do more car trips, and am hoping DS enjoys it more when he's a bit bigger.

200 pages and I have never seen this thread, really????

Obviously I am headed to WDW in August. It's been 5 years since we last went unless you count a quick '3 hour tour' in April. We were headed home from my sisters in ft. Myers and took a dinner pit stop in DtD.

Please help me get more excited about this upcoming trip. For some reason I have lost some of the anticipation to going to Disney. I know slap me in the head and knock some sense into me, right? But we spent a week at the beaches in the ft. Myers area in April and relaxed the entire time. Well minus the drive to and from ct.

Sadly, I am more excited about hitting the beaches in that area next April again then I am about Disney. So get me excited.

Ok I know I will be, really I will but the beach....ah...the beach.

Anyways, we are a family if 5, Dh, me, dd12, ds9 & dd7. They have all been before but the youngest was 2 1/2 the last trip, minus the pit stop in DtD.

We are going August 3-12, staying at the poly. It's my fav

It doesn't look like it. I would really like to go to Ottawa for Canada Day weekend, and we might still. But to get to Disney this summer and go again in December has really eaten the entire vacation budget. I have 3 siblings who are in Ottawa for University but we'd need a hotel room. I can only imagine it would be expensive over Canada day. Hmmm.. I'll look into it;)

We spend every Thanksgiving at the Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid New York with my family. That's 14 of us. It's a stunning property and we get two 3 bedroom condos. I look forward to it all year.

I'm also tossing around the idea of just dh and I going to Grove City for a weekend in November to shop for Christmas and get some alone time. The idea of getting all our shopping done in one weekend is VERY appealing. We'll just see what the budget looks like.

Dd dog sits for the summer, and ds has a few basketball camps. Both sets of our parents have a pool and one has a nearby cottage with a big river as well so we have a lot of free fun in our summers.:)

:welcome: to our thread :) . If you are looking for people to help boost your excitement level, you have come to the right place. We have a whole host of August cheerleaders that are eagerly counting down the days!

Is there any way you can squeeze in a day at Cocoa Beach (or one of the gulf beaches) during your stay to satisfy your inner beach bum? Maybe trade out one of your park days for renting a car and embarking on a little day trip?
