Hi,

Just joined the boards after lurking and learning so much! We have our trip planned for Aug 4-Aug 8th. We have been twice before but have never stayed on Disney property. This time we are splurging and staying on property, so excited! (Okay...actual reason, one less kid so cheaper with only 2, lol) I am travelling with my 2 teenage girls as husband could not get off work.

We are driving to Boston and flying to Orlando. (cheaper flight and some outlet shopping on the way home)
We are going to the darkside for the first couple days than heading to the coast for some relaxing before the main attraction!

We plan on staying at the CBR.

Will be spending time now reading more and more pages to get more tips and figure stuff out!! Mostly transportation questions and dining plan debate.

Thanks for all the tips and back to reading!:goodvibes

Opinions - What is too long of a Disney stay? We're already planning next years trip too and definitely want it longer than this years, but don't want to burn out. It will be in late Nov/early Dec if that makes a difference.

This year we are doing 8 days. I think 10 is the perfect length. It would give you time to relax by the pool, and explore some of the resorts for some dining you may otherwise miss. I think more than 10 days might be too much. 62 days to go !!!! :)

Our first two family trips were 7 days each (not long enough for us). Last year our trip was 12 days (just about the perfect length). This year we are going for 13 days!

:welcome: !

I see you are from Eastern Ontario. Where 'bouts exactly? We're from the same general area.

Thanks for everyones replies! I think we're going to plan a 10 day trip. DH wants to use the DxDP, so I'm hoping we'll still get a military discount on our room next year, because that's going to cost a big chunk of change!

Quick Question - I'm looking at restaurants on MDE and selected the DxDP box, and realized that Coral Reef doesn't show up? But it shows up for the regular dining plan. Does anyone know if this is a glitch or if we really wouldn't be able to use a DxDP credit there?

How about a QOTD?

Are you planning any other summer overnight getaways for your family?

Maybe a trip to a cottage, a couple of days in the big city, or an overnighter to visit friends or relatives who live afar?

Or is your Disney trip your sole summer expedition?

We just returned from a long weekend in Ohio visiting family and friends. I can't imagine that we'll go anywhere before our trip (it's only 73 till we leave/75 till we arrive).

A weekend away at my sister's trailer. My kids actually love to go there more than Disney! :confused3

Yes, the excitement of a family reunion in very backwoods Saskatchewan ;) DH has decided to opt out though, apparently the dog needs him here :confused3, and my Mum and I are taking the kids.

12-14 nights is perfect for us! Our 1st trip (6years ago), we stayed 9 nights and we weren't ready to home. Every year after that we booked two week trips. Since we travel in August we like to slow down and enjoy the pools/resorts and midday breaks are a must for us.

This year though it's a mother/daughter trip for my youngest dd (each kid gets one) and we decided 10 nights will do.

Hi August friends. I've gotten way behind in this thread the past week. I had a scary incident and I was afraid Disney in August might not even happen :worried: But now I'm looking at the positive.

Last Tuesday morning I had a TIA, which is a mini-stroke. I was having breakfast with DW (which we NEVER do mid-week - I'm taking it as a sign) when my arm started to go numb and my head was tingling and I thought I'd pass out. She took me to the ER, afraid it was something with my heart. We were shocked - well I was - she caught on fast what was happening - when they were rushing me into a CT scan and then MRI. I spent three days in the hospital and am now on three meds and so sad. I am essentially fine - I have some left arm/hand weakness (I'm a lefty) that I will start OT for next week and am having a hard time with stimulation - if I have to focus or concentrate on something for more than a few minutes, I get a headache and feel like I want to close my eyes. But that is getting better, and I think some of it is mental/anxiety....I just feel like a ticking time bomb and I need to move past that.

But today's the day I am going back to focussing on our summer and our plans and to do everything possible to make sure this doesn't happen again, so I am back to catch up with all of you and get back to some Disney planning!

FYI, I am 43, don't smoke, have an occasional glass of wine with dinner or a beer, run 3-4 times a week, have normal blood pressure, have always had normal cholesterol, although those numbers were not in line with my April physical so we'll follow up there, and basically eat a healthy diet - I could afford to lose 10 pounds or so, but I am not overweight by a medical standpoint. My dad and his two brothers have/had high cholesterol and my dad at age 62 and his brother at age 65 both passed from strokes. So I do have a family history. But otherwise, this should not have happened to me. So my message to you is, if you ever have weird symptoms where you get light headed, dizzy, and just don't feel right, see a doctor, even if you think it's nothing. My episode only lasted about 40 minutes. Had I been here alone, as I would have been 95% of other weekdays, I would have laid down on the couch thinking I didn't feel well and possibly thought I pulled a muscle in my arm, etc. The intensity of what was happening in no way matched the seriousness of the situation at the time and the change this will make to the rest of my life.

Ok, onward and upward...

That IS SCARY!!! I'm so sorry, but I am SO HAPPY that you had someone there with you and were able to get to the hospital!! I hope the focus on your vacation will aid you in a speedy and full recovery!!

As for this thread, it takes NOTHING for me to get about 4 or 5 pages behind!!! It moves right along!!! We go to the hospital this morning to get test results to see if Josh's treatment worked (or is working) for his rejection issues. I'm nervous, excited, and scared all at the same time.

Since we're all friends here I think I can ask this question without starting a huge DISboard battle. :)

QOTD: Do you think that Disney's policy of requiring ADRs for restaurants is a good thing or should all restaurants in WDW be first come, first served? :confused3

I'm kind of torn on this. On one hand for those of us who plan extensively a few months out it works out well, but it kills spontaneity. Most of us can't just wake up and say "I want to go to X park and eat at Y restaurant." You have to plan your trip around your meal reservations. Also for Florida residents who are able to do day trips it means they can't just walk up to most of the "good" restaurants there. Even for those that are able to just take off at a moment's notice and hit the World they are kind of stuck with either eating off site or eating counter service only. Not that some of the counter service are bad, they just aren't the quality of the table service places.

On the other hand I don't know if first come, first served would work considering the size of the crowds. Some people don't mind waiting an hour or so for a restaurant, but at Disney time is money to me (and most people) so maybe having to wait an hour or more for each meal would be frustrating and result in angry customers and push them off-site. :confused3

I'm torn on this one too. (I know I'm behind, but I just love the QOTDs!). I will admit that in the past when it was easier to cancel an ADR last minute, I didn't mind it as much. We'd know by noon or so if we wanted to change our plans and give up dinner where we had an ADR. But, now that you need 24 hours, I don't know. I just don't think walk ups would work if that was the only way. They sometimes work now because not as many people try, but if there were no ADRs I think you'd be looking at a minimum of an hour wait almost everywhere. It would be chaotic.

When we were in DTD a few weeks ago, I pulled up MDE to find a place to eat. There was no availability on the app, but there was a sign outside of T-rex saying walk ups welcome. We waited less than 20 minutes for a table, which was probably what we would have waited with an ADR, so who knows how well the system really works ;)

However, I've never really given much thought to those people who just go whenever they feel like going, and how they miss out. I think a good option would be for Disney to hold back some of their reservations, so that people could have the opportunity to walk up.

D~

Not sure if this was brought up, but way back when they had PS (priority seating - before ADRs - same thing, not sure why they changed the name), they used to hold a block of tables that got released closer to the date. So there would be a block opening at the 30 day mark and then again at the 7 day (or within the week). It was not as hard to make or change a PS while you were in your hotel room. I haven't seen that tip or concept mentioned on the boards in a long time though, so I'm not sure if they still do that, but it would help the locals.

Had a second chance to snag a BOG ADR...alas, no luck again...I tried for half an hour continuously even...no clue as to what happened... :-/

That IRKS me!! I think I read somewhere else on here (maybe not this thread but another one) that Disney isn't necessarily putting all the "open" times back into the system right away. I think the OP was saying that there was so much competition to get BOG that it was becoming an issue. I don't know if that's true or not, but it makes sense. I know that when someone posted an opening the other day, I literally called right then and continued to try to call and use the computer to get it to no avail. I'm hoping that when we hit the 45 day mark, things will open up a little. If not, I'll just go with what I have and be happy I'm going to Disney!!!

Please know you are in my prayers. I am so happy your wife was there :littleangel: and you didn't take to the couch alone. My dad passed after a TIA then a major stroke in his mid 60's. I understand the time bomb feeling, really well actually. But remember your mental health is as important as your physical health, so I am glad you are back here and getting back to life as we know it.

I read a book called My Stroke of Insight, and the author discussed how important it was for her to sleep whenever she needed to. Sleep is healing time. She also talked about not letting herald get overstimulated, and being very careful about what she let into her brain -- tv, negative-talk, etc. I wish you health and hope that you take it easy on yourself. You will recover, your brain just needs some rest! Sending good vibes, healing energy and lots of hugs to you!
