Hi August friends. I've gotten way behind in this thread the past week. I had a scary incident and I was afraid Disney in August might not even happen :worried: But now I'm looking at the positive.

Last Tuesday morning I had a TIA, which is a mini-stroke. I was having breakfast with DW (which we NEVER do mid-week - I'm taking it as a sign) when my arm started to go numb and my head was tingling and I thought I'd pass out. She took me to the ER, afraid it was something with my heart. We were shocked - well I was - she caught on fast what was happening - when they were rushing me into a CT scan and then MRI. I spent three days in the hospital and am now on three meds and so sad. I am essentially fine - I have some left arm/hand weakness (I'm a lefty) that I will start OT for next week and am having a hard time with stimulation - if I have to focus or concentrate on something for more than a few minutes, I get a headache and feel like I want to close my eyes. But that is getting better, and I think some of it is mental/anxiety....I just feel like a ticking time bomb and I need to move past that.

But today's the day I am going back to focussing on our summer and our plans and to do everything possible to make sure this doesn't happen again, so I am back to catch up with all of you and get back to some Disney planning!

FYI, I am 43, don't smoke, have an occasional glass of wine with dinner or a beer, run 3-4 times a week, have normal blood pressure, have always had normal cholesterol, although those numbers were not in line with my April physical so we'll follow up there, and basically eat a healthy diet - I could afford to lose 10 pounds or so, but I am not overweight by a medical standpoint. My dad and his two brothers have/had high cholesterol and my dad at age 62 and his brother at age 65 both passed from strokes. So I do have a family history. But otherwise, this should not have happened to me. So my message to you is, if you ever have weird symptoms where you get light headed, dizzy, and just don't feel right, see a doctor, even if you think it's nothing. My episode only lasted about 40 minutes. Had I been here alone, as I would have been 95% of other weekdays, I would have laid down on the couch thinking I didn't feel well and possibly thought I pulled a muscle in my arm, etc. The intensity of what was happening in no way matched the seriousness of the situation at the time and the change this will make to the rest of my life.

Ok, onward and upward...

Holy scary!!! So glad you are doing better. You know, I had thought it was odd that we hadn't heard from you on the thread for a while (you're a pretty regular poster here)......but I chocked it up to maybe you and the fam being away for the Memorial Day weekend. I would never have guessed you were ill!!

I think, in general, that young people pooh-pooh away alot of stuff that maybe should be a taken as a red flag and checked out. At 43, a TIA was probably the LAST thing on your mind!! Yet we need to be so vigilant about our health. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 24, after ignoring so many warning signs. Luckily, the body took over and I had a grand mal seizure that sent me to the hospital, which started the medical ball rolling so we could eventually figure out what the heck was really wrong. Your story is a good reminder to exercise a degree of caution and get checked out when things are a little off, just in case.

As for this thread, it takes NOTHING for me to get about 4 or 5 pages behind!!! It moves right along!!! We go to the hospital this morning to get test results to see if Josh's treatment worked (or is working) for his rejection issues. I'm nervous, excited, and scared all at the same time.

Sending good thoughts and positive vibes your way. Please let us know how Josh makes out. We are all praying for him to get some good news!!! pixiedust:

Thats so scary! I'm glad you are 'ok' now. I'm sure the symptoms you described would cause many people to think they were coming down with a flu!

Thinking of you and hoping you make a full recovery!

Had a second chance to snag a BOG ADR...alas, no luck again...I tried for half an hour continuously even...no clue as to what happened... :-/

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

Last night there was one posted in the cancellation thread... I figured we wouldn't get it but went on to my disney experience app and plugged it in. It came up as available but call to book. I was so shocked! We ended up getting it. Then i connected with someone on the aug FB page and she was able to get my later evening time by calling for it as well.

ETA i think it was seriously just luck!

So scary! I am so glad you are ok!! And I thank you so much for sharing. I was in a rotten mood this morning and near tears because of a series of things. All of them feel incredibly minor in comparison this morning and you have given me a much needed reminder that I have it good and everything is small potatoes compared to a health scare.
Rest, stay positive and plan that trip. We're here for you:hug:

I can see the need for ADR's. I can not see why they need to be done 180 days in advance. I think honestly it's part of a strategy to get people to lock into a Disney vacation choice. If you hear the hype and the "Oh no! You won't get anything if you don't book waaayyyy in advance!!" stuff, you are more likely to book way ahead of time, make payments regularly and stay committed to a Disney trip IMO. They could easily make people make their ADR's even 30 days ahead of time.. but look at all those months people have time to make another vacation choice, or not save up the money and decide not to go. I think it's clever marketing really.

So in personal news..
The budget took a hit today. My sweet boy cat peed in the house a few times which is highly unusual for him so we went to the vet. He has a partial blockage in his urethra and had to stay for the day to get a catheter and be flushed out. Now we switch him to a stone dissolving prescription diet. He already ate a very expensive food but apparently male cats are prone to stones and he needs something with less ash and more liquid.
In the end..$500.00 :sad2:.
It could have been very serious and I am VERY grateful he is ok. I will need to cut some corners somewhere to get back in budget for the summer but it will be ok. I am thinking of ditching the car and using Disney transportation. There's at least 200-250 that I had built into my vacation budget.
It's not an expense we were expecting so it would have to come out of savings which I'd rather not do. Ditching the car would just cut it in half and I'd feel better about that:) . And my wee little friend is on the mend. That is the important part! :)

I think that you hit the nail on the head with the 180 day thing...great theory. Sorry to hear about your kitty, but glad to hear he will be ok. Those unexpected vet bills are tough...but I agree that cutting the car is an easy place to save. Take advantage of DME and enjoy relaxing on Disney transportation for the week.

Oh so glad your kitty is okay. I agree ditch the car!

We've been having a tough time with our cat. She's 10 and has been really sick she got a virus, super high fever of 40 degrees, fever blisters in her ears that burst and left her ears full of crud. she seems to be doing better, but is still refusing to eat. We are forcefeeding very high calorie canned food and she has had so many antibiotics and iv fluids to hydrate. She seems to be on the mend but still refuses to eat anything despite the appetite stimulants and such. She's lost most of the fur on her ears and around her eyes. and has shaved parts all on her fur. we're at close to $1000 in vet bills on her and 1 other cat that needed an antibiotic. Throw in the fact that there is a new puppy in the house... We have seen way too much of the vet in the past month.

So sorry to hear about your cat too! When my brother's dog had major problems with his ears, they tried everything and finally gave him some yogurt to eat and put yogurt in his ears, and it worked. He did ultimately have his ear tubes removed, but the yogurt got an out of control situation under control. Might not hurt to try if she's still suffering (and you check with someone other than me if yogurt is safe for cats!). My dog died of cancer a year and a half ago and the bills were insane - hugs - I sympathize!

Okay, I think I've officially brainwashed my kids!! My youngest came home from school yesterday and said they had to pick a famous person to do a biography on - and he picked Walt Disney!! So we spent our evening at the library getting books about Walt - and spent all morning, over breakfast, tellling fun facts about him, Disney movies and the parks. What better way to pass my time :goodvibes

:thumbsup2

I am so glad that you are ok. Hopefully looking foward to your Disney trip will help you focus on something fun, and at least for a bit relax your mind away from the scary stuff.

Question of the Day???
Do you want to/have you done Pick a Pearl at EP Japan or DTD? Will you/did you buy a necklace to put it in?

I did this in the Japanese pavillon a few years ago! It was so much fun. I think I may have posted a picture on here, but I'm not sure. I bought a setting and put it on a black cord.

Here it is when they gave it to me:

And here is a better pic of it in it's setting:

Are you going to do it? If so, I recommend doing it in Japan as opposed to DTD or the BC. They do a little ceremony and everyone gets really excited...I have a video of it somewhere...they had us counting in Japanese, and cheering :)

I feel like I'm coming to the party late, but silly me I never really looked at the Happy Dance Forum.... silly me! :guilty:

So, here is our August Plan:

Arriving 8/19 (Me, DS11, DS9, DS7, DD7)

Our first 8 nights will be at SSR with my DB, DSIL & 3 DNs, as well as my Dad for his VERY FIRST VISIT!

I've also added 2 nights for just me and the kids at CR. They don't know about this (I'm going to surprise them!). It was a spur of the moment decision for me when the end of Aug discounts were announced. We've all always wanted to stay there, but with a family of 6 we've chosen villas or offsite. Since DH can't go on this trip, I thought it would be a great treat for the kids, ok and me too ;)

ADRs are in flux as I continue to stalk the ressie page, but these are the one's I'm *not* planning to tweak :lmao:

8/21 CP 8:05 (My Dad's Birthday Breakfast :cloud9:)
8/21 1900 4:40 (My Dad's Birthday Dinner :cloud9:)
8/24 Boma 5:50
8/28 CM 7:25

Welcome to our group! You will love staying at the CR at the end of your trip and being so close to the MK! We will be there about the same time as you too!

I haven't posted in here yet. But I just paid off my balance in full and needed to come in and say WOOHOOOO!!! :)

We're going 8/17-8/25, and staying at POR. It will be me, my DH and our daughter (she turns 5 a few days before we leave). I'm super psyched!!! :woohoo:

Hi Everyone!

We (Me, DH, DD (12), and my mom) will be in the world from 8/6 - 8/9. We will be at CBR.

Our ADR's are:
8/6: Ohana at 8:45am
Hoping to score Wishes Dessert Party!
8/8: Crystal Palace at 9:50 am
8/9: Asershus at 10:40

Hoping to meet some other DISers.

Welcome to you both!

Welcome to the newcomers to the thread and congrats to all of those who have paid off their trip! :cool1:

There was a thread posted yesterday that Jungle Cruise and Muppet Vision 3D will be closed for part or all of August. Muppet Vision will be out all of August and September and Jungle Cruise will be out the second half of August. We're going to MK the day before JC closes so we'll have to make it a point to hit that while we're there. Kinda bummed about MV3D since we skipped it last time and it's a great place to cool off in the heat (and a funny show too) but I guess they have to take things down sometime.

QOTD: Since tomorrow is the 24 hours of Disney would you consider going to a full day of Disney if it was happening during one of your trips? If it was scheduled every year would you try to put it into future plans?

I think I would love to try it, but I know my kids couldn't hang that long. :lmao: I'd be sucking Starbucks all night and moving right along and the kids would be dragging and cranky. Of course when they are teens and have the stamina for it I'd probably be too old to pull an allnighter! :rotfl: I don't know if I'd put it into my future plans because the next day would have to be a recovery day for sure.

Oh, this is the first I'm hearing of these rehabs :( I'm a little bummed about MV3D - that is one of those that i always think won't be a big deal if we skip and then remember just how much I love it when we go! And I LOVE the JC. I know every line, every joke, every which way they can tell them, and I still crack up like an 8 year old. That one is a big disappointment. Although we did survive Space Mountain, Splash and TSMM rehabs and those were much bigger in my mind.

With the ages of my kids now, I would definitely try a 24 hour day, and plan a full resort day for the day after. I know it's insanely crowded, etc. but I would just want to do it to do it.

In all my trips, I have never planned around a specific event. We've been there for different events, but never specifically. It's hard with school schedules, but in the future, I think I would like to try to plan to enjoy some of the things I haven't done yet because of the timing.

Well the bad news.. Dh's tooth got really really painful and he had to leave work. The good news? They made a spot for him at the dentist, he's feeling MUCH better and insurance covered 80%:cool1:. It's weird what it will and won't cover but it went through. So crisis averted for the day:)

Glad the crisis was averted - but ouch! To me, there is nothing worse than the dentist.

And hugs for all the appliances going...We had to replace the electric panel thing on our stove a few weeks ago - almost $400. But better than buying a new oven/stove. And our washer/dryer went a year and a half ago, but my ILs gave us new ones for Christmas. My DW told my MIL that she is out of control with the laundry when she visits (she literally will collect it from DW's siblings who live in apartments and do laundry 24/7 for the entire time she's here) and that she broke them, she needed to replace them :rotfl2:

She's coming for three and a half weeks starting on June 19th. Wish me (and my washer) luck :lmao:

In the car, at the table (or whenever we are waiting around), our family plays the "Category Game"...

Someone picks a category (i.e. "things that fly") and we round-robin giving our answers. If you can't think of something, say something that isn't part of the category, or repeat an answer, you're out. Last man standing wins.

So tonight we were in the car and the kids asked for a category. With WDW on my mind, I said "Disney Resorts or Restaurants". The kids could name quite a few but yes, I won.:rolleyes1

When we got home DS9 asked "So how many resorts ARE there at Disney?". I looked it up. There are 29 if you count the Swan, Dolphin, & the Campground... 30 if you count the soon to open GFV.

Which made me think... even if I stayed at a different resort every year, it would be a VERY long time before I had to repeat a stay. Perhaps I should just go more often so I can try them all in less than 30 years :rotfl:

Wow! I don't think I realized there were that many! I've stayed in 9 (with several repeats). I have a lot to go! Too bad I just can't seem to give up the BC on the deluxe level or POFQ on the mod level to try out some new ones. Looks like I need more split stays in my future!

Welcome back and glad to hear that things went as well as they could. Some of that stuff can be very dangerous/deadly as you know. I lost my ex-MIL to a stroke at 53 and a couple months later a close friend's mom at 53. All had gone untreated. The following year my ex had a horrid migraine that took her out of commission for two days. She had migraines since she was a kid so she didn't think anything of it but I made her go to the dr. Dr sent her for an MRI and they discovered an aneurysm. They told us at the time that it was important to get it fixed soon, but didn't require an emergency surgery. After the surgery happened three months later the Dr told me that it had grown to a size that was close to rupturing just in that short period of time. It was a pretty intense year for us as she had complications from the surgery as well and had to be put back in the hospital for an infection which could've required more surgery. Thankfully the medications treated her but it was a scary time.

joshsmom - hope all goes well for you today! :grouphug:

We're at 80 days today. It's amazing how fast it goes by after you've passed 100 days.

With my old QOTD being brought up I am thinking I need to have a countdown for our 180 day mark of our next trip so I can make ADRs for then. :lmao:

QUESTION OF THE DAY???
What's your WDW countdown today? Do you check in every few days or keep a countdown on your desk top/smartphone?

I check every few days. We are at 85 days according to My Disney Experience.

I have one on my iphone (and the ticker in my sig line). Today is 81 days to go!! Wow, it's coming fast!

Hi Everyone, one of the members over at the Canadian board directed me over here as I'm heading down to Orlando on August 15th. We are at Universal Hard Rock Hotel for the first 9 nights and the over to Disney's CR for 8 nights. There are 5 of us in the family myself and DH and our 3 girls 16,12 and 9. Looking forward to the trip but a bit worried about that time of year since they said on the news a couple of nights ago that this is going to be an above average year for storms!!! Have to keep our fingers crossed about it all.
Seems like lots of people go at this time of year so I'm gussing it should be ok.

Welcome! Great choice of hotels. We loved the HRH when we stayed there. We typically go in August, and while there will be storms, as others will tell you here, they generally don't impact too much. And with a trip as long as yours, you should be fine!

CerysG- welcome! You'll arrive the day before us though we're not staying at universal just doing 2 park days there.

We go at this time each time and the weather storms a bit but that just makes the parks quieter. As Momto3gr8boys said it goes by quickly.

I'm also glad to hear i'm not the only one who takes a longer vacation! We're down for 17 days this time! Cbr/bwi split for us!

Sorry to hear everyone has been under the weather! I got a cold a few weekends ago and I still sound like a baby seal. I feel better though so I guess it will just take some time to go away. I hope the rest of you are on the mend.

We are in the 80's today:woohoo:. 89 days to go in fact. I kind of want to poke at my dining reservations today and change them around. We have a Planet Hollywood because the kids wanted to try it. I am overall pretty "meh" about it but I'm sure it will be fine. I should leave my dining reservations alone shouldn't I? ::yes::

I hope my American friends are enjoying their long weekend! I just counted and the kids have 23 school days left. Holy Moly where did this year go?!?!
My oldest will be in grade 11 next year. And my youngest is switching schools to go into a french immersion program for fourth grade.
Like the rest of you were saying I am excited for this trip but don't want to wish my summer away.
I'm wondering if I didn't make a mistake booking us to come home the day before school starts. We've done it before, but this year is a big year for my little guy because he is going to a new school and I wonder if an extra day to settle in wouldn't have been a better idea. I could switch flights and I would only lose about $60 for the last night at the airport hotel. But the flights are another story. Everyone wants to come home on the Sunday and the non-stops are sky high. There is a very early flight with a connection for about what I paid. But bleh.. 7 hours to get home. Not excited about that either.

I'm not sure on the number of days (although I'm sure my kids know!), but we are winding down for the summer here too. As for coming back right before school, we have done it. This year we come back the 27th and my youngest has an orientation on the 29th. I would have come back the 28th, but I thought a day might be better in case we get hit with weather delays. But in terms of being ready, I think as long as you have everything set before you leave (his clothes, backpack, etc. all ready to go) he will be fine. The first day is such a quick whirlwind - I'm sure he will be fine. Plus, he won't have a day to sit and think and worry about starting in a new school - just throw him in! :rotfl:

I just keep messing with my ADRs!!! I think Disney has gotten at least 5 more ADRs out of me because I keep checking for the Dessert Party in August!! When I do that, I figure "hey, I'm already here, wonder if I can do something else!!!!" :lmao: I just looked at Josh's site for crowd levels again and TWO of my MK days are now RED--my first day is one of them!! :confused3 ARGGGGG I don't want to change them--although I've toyed with the idea of doing so. But I KNOW if I change those two its going to change others and I have ADR's to consider!! Oh my GOSH I'm tired!!

DSs school was over this week. But, since he has been on homebound for most of this semester, he still has math to make up. Grades have to be turned in by 6/28 so I HOPE he can just get it together by then!!! I don't want him to be behind going into his senior year!

Ok, help me out here. The dessert party is confusing me - can you book it online once it opens up or do you have to call everyday to see if it has opened? I haven't even decided if I want to do it yet, but I know I need to jump on it the minute it opens up if I do. I also know there's a thread here that I am subscribed to, but there's a lot of chatter there. So, when you say you check for the dessert party, where are you checking? And what do you look under?

As for the touring plans and ADRs, I have given up, I think ;). I think I am going to stick with what we have. I do think I have too many ADRs and I should cancel something, but I just can't figure out which one to skip!
