Hey there everyone, hope you all had a good weekend ::yes:: . Happy Victoria Day to my fellow Canucks on this thread. Hope the sun is shining where you are!!

I spent my weekend sick  .... with croup, no less. In May?!? Had such trouble breathing a few times I thought, more than once, I'd meet my maker before the weekend was over  . Thankfully, I seem to be down to just a rotten cough and an achy body (most likely from all that dang coughing) so I think I might be on the mend. Summer viruses are always the worst!

Anyhoo, let's start the week off with a QOTD:

Do you worry about a hurricane affecting your trip?

Do you have a "rainy day plan" built into your trip in the event that a hurricane affects the area during your vacation (by "affect", I mean more than just a little bit of rain).

Do you buy cancellation and interruption insurance to protect your plans?

I know what pigletto's answer will be.....she and I watched anxiously as Hurricane Isaac made his way toward Florida last August :rolleyes1 .

Ugh...sorry you were sick all weekend! I hope you are feeling better now!

As for the QOTD, I don't worry too much about hurricanes, as they don't often affect Orlando. I do have cancellation and interruption insurance through my Visa. When it rains, we usually hit the parks anyway. If it's monsoon-ing on our TL day this year we will go to DQ instead, and if it's not nice on our resort day, we will probably just switch it up and hit the pavillons in Epcot.

The one time we had a hurricane come through was 2006 (Ernesto) which was supposed to be really bad (and it did cancel a bunch of flights, but not ours). The parks stayed open though and we went to the AK wearing ponchos. We had the place to ourselves! It really wasn't a big deal and we kept joking how Disney must have put up a bubble :)

Crossing fingers this summer will be ok. After Irene and Sandy, I'm hoping for a quiet year!

Thanks for asking about Josh as well!

Yes I worry about hurricanes. This will be our 4th year in a row travelling this week and it is always a concern. I told the story in last years August thread but I'll share again . I went on a cruise with my parents and siblings in 2006. There was a hurricane in the area toward the end of the trip. One night after dinner the staff started taping airsick bags up and down the hallways..all over the ship and made a brief announcement that there was a hurricane and we were going to sail well outside of it's path and we should expect some rough water.
How rough you ask? Well...:crazy2:
You couldn't keep anything on a table.. it rolled right off. All of the water splashed out of the pools (some were drained but the smaller ones just splashed everywhere). You had to hold the walls and tiptoe up the hallway to stay upright. I watched quite a few people fall. This was a HUGE ship and it rocked the boat like crazy. And boy was I sick:crazy2: It was scary, and keep in mind we were sailing hundreds of miles outside of the storm.
In the end we were on the cruise an extra few days. The hurricane had hit the port we were supposed to cruise into so we arrived in Miami instead.. 3 days late. By this point the ship ATM's had run out of money, there was no fresh produce or dairy and people had missed their flights home. You could see the people who had insurance because they weren't crying or yelling. Many people were irrate. Luckily we did buy insurance and our TA took very good care of us.
This cruise was the last week of August.
As Gina pointed out there was a huge storm to watch last year but we got out a few days before it affected flights. It's always a good idea to have insurance this time of year. Anything can happen.
So I'll watch the National Hurricane Centre website along with everyone else. I like to know early if I need to get another flight. I don't care if it rains the whole time I am there but I do care if I can't get out at all.

Amen, sister! :worship:

I honestly don't mind if there's an issue once we're there. I just don't want to be delayed getting there.

Best case scenario, a hurricane would hit the day were supposed to leave before we head to the airport. I'd be more than happy to get stuck :)

Awww, so nice of you to ask!! We are still in the hospital . . . but we may get to go home today or tomorrow!!! It all depends on how his blood work is. He has ONE MORE dose of his treatment today for the rejection. Then we wait . . .and see what his numbers do. Luckily, we can wait at home. AND if he does need another course of treatment, he can come in and do it on an outpatient basis. We REALLY hope that this course of treatment was enough to turn it around and he won't need any mroe treatment. More than anything, he just wants to go home. So hopefully, we will be able to do that!

Hello to all my August DISer friends!!! :wave2: :grouphug:

Good to hear. Hope you all get to go home soon. Keeping good thoughts for you!!

QOTD?? How are the weight loss programs going for those of you trying to get into shape? I know someone out there has lost weight recently 'cause I have found it, it's here safe on my belly.

I am down 20 lbs since I started about a month and a half ago. Kind of hit a wall this week with a fair amount of eating out due to visitors coming in from out of town who want to see my city for the first time. We have tons of tasty food around here but none of it is really diet friendly.

I'm using the Lose It! app on my iPhone to track food and exercise. I'm limiting my calorie intake and getting most of my exercise through walking. My wife and I are getting 4-6 miles per day in on average. I can feel it in my clothes that are now starting to fall off.

Re: speaking of shoes - Squirrel4569 - I know your wife got a pair of vibrams for August. I ran in mine today in the rain for the first time - about 30 minutes, 3 miles, light to medium drizzle and they were sopping - totally soaked and there is no way I would be able to stay in them after. Now, after several hours, they are no where near dry. So, just wanted to give you guys a head's up to have some back up shoes for the wet weather! I did put on my new keens to go out to eat after and they were fine out there in the wet weather.

Good to know! We'll have to test that out here with the ones she got. They are supposed be good for the water so hopefully she doesn't run into that issue since she loves them so much. I've got a pair of Keen sandals that seem to do pretty well. I'm hoping my ankle holds up to a full day of walking without a brace.

I don't worry about hurricanes too much because there's nothing you can do about them. It's like earthquakes in California. They're going to happen and you can't really predict when or where they will hit. Hurricanes are the same way. One year you get three that cross over Central Florida and the next five you don't get any that come near Florida but you get one that takes out New Jersey. Sometimes they hit in August or September and sometimes they come in November. It's all very unpredictable. If one comes and my trip gets cancelled or shortened I won't stress because I know I'm coming back at some point.

On this trip I did buy insurance and I'm kicking myself about it now. Disney has a hurricane policy that allows you to cancel or reschedule without penalty if a hurricane is coming that way during your trip. Because I booked my flight with my American Express card I could've gotten insurance for $10/person instead of $75/adult that I got through Disney.

If it rains we'll do as much as we can tolerate in the rain in the parks. Absolute worst case would be hanging in the room for a day. One trip in the past it rained the day we were supposed to go to Epcot. We just went to DTD and caught a movie and relaxed. It cleared up later and we just decided to hang at the hotel and swim in the pool.

Whoops.....sorry 'bout that  .

Not something really to "worry" about, but it is prime hurricane season at that point....so definitely something to be "aware" of.

I try to think good thoughts, think good thoughts...:littleangel:
I can't be sure this strategy will help, but this will likely be my last trip to WDW so I can't imagine it being ruined by a huge storm or I would break down and cry.
As long as the parks are open we will be there, and I really really hate rain.

Of course we worry about hurricanes when we go. We've been very lucky the last two times we've gone. Last time we were there in 2011 Sandy was scheduled to hit... And we all know how that ended!

We don't buy extra insurance as we're covered for travel and medical with DH's work plan, and we have some through our mastercard and visa as well.

Our plan is to enjoy what we can while we're there, last time the downpours that came made it fun to dance through hollywood studios without anyone in our way!

We have travel insurance and I had read about Disney's cancellation policy when a hurricane hits. I'm not worried about the hurricanes since all I would have to do is leave Florida and drive home. I grew up in Puerto Rico so we get Hurricanes and Tropical Storms every year. If it rains were good with the ponchos. It's all part of the experience.
