I suspect a lot of the AP price increase has to do with trying to actually bring down the number of annual passholders, since having 900,000+ APs out there has caused some logistics problems for them. With plans for several visits I was able to justify $500 for a premium AP, but an extra $150 on top of that would be really tough, especially since I live over 1,000 miles away.
It wouldn't quite be the same thing as APs, but I wonder if adding a non-expiration option to Disneyland tickets would work?
