smoker in room next door

We arrived in at POR last sunday late. By Monday night, our room was filled with cigarette smoke. I called the front desk who told me all Disney rooms are smoke free. I replied then you need to tell the people next door. Housekeeping brought us an air purifier. It helped very little. Tuesday night the room was HORRIBLE. I can not describe how horrible the smell was. We had to walk outside to get fresh air. Again we called management who said, " we have addressed the issue with the people next door and they will be leaving very soon. We can move you to an equally nice room." I said fine we can't stay here. Management helped us move our stuff but hubby and I were upset that we had to leave our room instead of kicking these people out. It appears Disney cares more about the returning dollar than the safety of other guests.

Management could smell the stench upon knocking on our door. The smell was coming through the adjoining door. And once opening that door the smoke poured into our room.

What makes us even madder, these people were still in their room on Saturday when we checked out. I understand management didn't want to move smokers to another room to stink up another one but.......... if they are so big on rules then they should have been kicked out. She, management, said the rooms would have to be throughly cleaned and all curtains removed.

Is there a fine for smokers?

There is supposed to be a fine of I think $250. I am not sure if they actually charge it in most cases though.

This, unfortunately, has been my experience as well. I had smokers next door to me at Pop Century who insisted upon smoking directly outside of my room. Security was called several times but nothing was done to rectify the situation.

People can be real jerks. I'm curious if anyone has actually been fined for smoking in the room. I've stayed in many non-smoking hotels and have never had a problem with people breaking the rules and I'm VERY anti-smoking so it would really bother me.

I'm pretty sure it's not just at Disney World. Most people carry their bad behavior everywhere they go.
Smoking is a particularly bad habit that some people simply think they're entitled to. We have people in our apartment building that smoke, even though it's a smoke free building. It's the worst in the winter time, because they don't want to smoke out in the cold. When it's slightly warmer they smoke on their balcony which seeps down into our windows if we want to have them open. I'm just glad we're moving away from this building in a couple months. Well... from this town in general.

Hopefully the people got fined for smoking, but they probably still feel justified anyways. I've never had a problem with anybody smoking at a Disney hotel, but if I ever do I will be very frustrated.

We have been visiting WDW for the past 10 years at least once a year and on some occasions 2 times a year. This has the been the first time we ever encountered a smoker next door.

Our baby was suppose to sleep on the trundle bed which pulled out right in front of the adjoining door. She did the first night but the 2nd night there was NO way she could have. It was like the person next door was getting back at us for complaining. Our room had that smoky haze and soured cigarette stench. Our clothing that was hanging there all day had already soaked up the smell. We had to air them out.

ARGH! I just don't understand WDW. Rules are rules right? They won't let me take a stoller up a handicap ramp but a smoker can endanger my safety???? (and yes I had a CM tell me I couldn't take my stroller up the handicap ramp to the train that it would have to be broken down and carried up)

What a lousy situation to be in. Disney needs to be more concerned about their guests who are inconvenienced than about inconsiderate guests who insist on breaking the rules to the detriment of others. Those guests should've been fined and escorted off the property without compensation.

You'd have to check the paperwork you get when you check in - I can't remember what it says. But I think the fine might be the only "teeth" they really have in terms of people breaking the smoking rules. Again, I could be wrong on that - it might say they can kick you out specifically for that reason. And it could be that those people felt that the fine (which is like $275 if I recall right) was worth paying to them.

I think it's not as straightforward to resolve as you might think, which is why they moved you. They wanted to resolve your complaint as quickly as possible, and that's what they did.

It's entirely possible that they WERE trying to get back at you. Unfortunately, immature people are like that.
It sucks that stupid people can ruin things for the rest of us.

Wow, another negative post about POR. What the heck is going on at that resort?

I would write a letter and complain about how you were forced to move, instead of management solving the problem. Did you get the name of the manager you talked to? If so, include that. Maybe if Disney starts to get enough complaints about the managers at POR they will do something.

it is sad. POR used to be my favorite resort. But I don't think I will be returning.

I don't think they should have moved you to "an equally nice room"--they should have upgraded you! It sounds like management handled the situation very poorly.

I don't know what else they could have upgraded me to because we were in building 14 (the closest to main building), first floor, and river view. We moved 6 doors down.

I am furious that these people were allowed to stay in their room!!! I should have called the fire marshall on disney and these people. If this happens again, you bet I will.

While all Disney resorts are supposed to be entirely smoke-free, it makes infinite more sense to leave the violaters in the one room (so as not to risk them polluting up additional/new rooms) and move the offended party. That's what Disney did. THAT'S why they moved the OP instead of the smokers.

They're not going to tell a Guest what action is taken against any other Guest violating the resort rules aka terms of the contract. More than likely, this other party was assessed the cleaning fee every time a violation was noted.

Really? I thought the connecting doors were always on the wall opposite the beds, not the same wall as the headboards. Is it different at POR?

I agree with the above - WDW Resort states that the penalty for smoking in your room or on your balcony is a fine/room cleaning expense. I don't think their policy is to actually evict a guest.

About the connecting rooms - our last stay at the Polynesian, we had two sets of adjoining doors in our room - one by the headboards of the beds, one by the desk/armoire.

We had a King bedroom on the corner at POR and the connecting door was on the same wall as the head board.

I don't believe that is true. People had trouble all the time. And they still do simply because some people can't follow the rules

Not sure what can be done about those who think having a smoke in the room is worth paying the fine (assuming Disney actually charged them the fine.)

When we were at POR last Aug, there was a room down the walkway from us that had the room chairs pulled outside, and as far as I could tell, left them out day and night. Did these people ever go to the parks? They were always sitting out there smoking Unfortunatley we had to pass by everytime we wanted to go out to main buildings to food court, etc.
I held my breath every time I passed them. By the 2nd day, when we were at the main building, I lodged a complaint, and it was taken care of immediatley.
