Grown ups only! 10 year anniversary trip with lots of drinks, food and selfies-COMPLETE 2/22/16

Great reviews so far! Nothing like an anniversary trip (we did our 10th in NYC!). Can't wait until Dh and I go to Disney on our own....right now we are thinking of our 20th in 2019. As it is for now, our boys are still coming on vacay with us. Although I have to say Disney is lots of fun with teenagers! Looking forward to reading more!

Hi there Natalie :wave2: I knew I liked you as soon as you mentioned getting a Grey Goose Slush lol! My favorite Disney drink :thumbsup2 You are NOT kidding when you say trips without kids are different, DH and I just took our 2nd trip to Disney minus our boys last month. They are completely awesome!!!

Ugh I'm dying to try the Avocado Margerita from La Cava! We tried getting in there twice last month but the lines were ridiculous. I found replacement drinks though, no worries ;) Also want to try the Wave, I don't see too many reviews so it was nice to see your positive one!

Weird about the Boathouse waiter.......

We were seated right away and had an adorable waiter (blanking on his name!). We each ordered a Mai Tai and for an appetizer, we selected the "bacon and eggs" Maple-lacquered Pork Belly with Lake Meadow Naturals Perfect Egg and Tillamook Smoked Cheddar Grits. O.M.G. This was hands down one of the best things we ate all week. The pork belly had almost a pastrami seasoning. It was sticky and sweet on the outside, the egg was poached to perfection and the grits were smooth and cooked perfectly.

That looks amazing! Wow.

We were blown away, seriously. Both of us ordered the salt crusted beef tenderloin which was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were flavorful if not a wee bit on the salty side. The green beans were crunchy and fresh tasting.

This looks delicious- like signature quality. The Wave has been on my list to try.

By the time we got to Germany, we were ready for a nice cold beer. We both ordered the Schoenhofer Grapefruit beer. Scott was not expecting it to be so sweet. I had read reviews so I had an idea. It's kinda like a shandy if you're familiar with those. There's a heavy grapefruit flavor but with a beer finish. I enjoyed mine. I don't think Scott liked his as much. Clearly...I enjoyed mine LOL

YAY, schofferhofer is my favorite! Glad you loved it, even if Scott wasn't as thrilled with it, haha.

Why have I never done the frozen margarita trifecta!? This looks awesome.

THE CRONUT. Oh how I love thee. They are so warm and crunchy and sweet and flakey. All.good.things.

Sooooooo delicious! I don't know if I can pass by the refreshment port without one now.

I had the grossest burger ever. I don't have any pictures, or additional points to make here. The burger was cold, the cheese was sweaty and the bun was stale. We couldn't believe how truly bad that was LOL. Scott actually brought it up yesterday. It will forever be etched in our memory.

I don't know that I've ever heard of cheese being referred to as sweaty, hahahaha. I hardly get QS at Hollywood Studios and I almost feel guilty, like I'm not giving it a chance, but now I see why!

I did not like touching the fish or sticking my thumb in it's mouth so there aren't a lot of pictures of me holding my fish. But I caught about 5 in total and Scott got like, 9! It ended up being one of the most fun things I've ever done in Disney and I highly recommend it as a SPECIAL treat if you like fishing. The price tag was high...but the experience was worth it! Especially if you go in on it with another couple.

I can't say I'd be thrilled about touching the fish either, but that sounds like such a fun, romantic, special experience! I love it. Definitely a great anniversary outing. I'll have to keep it in the back of my mind for a future celebration, it looks like you guys had a wonderful time.

I 100% agree about The Boathouse. I love steak and seafood so when it opened I was thrilled with the idea. We haven't eaten there yet, but we did go in and walk around once to check it out. It looked good but I was also confused with the pricing. I can see why it's not a 1 credit, but is it really worthy of 2 credits?! I just can't justify it. We're going to Raglan Road for dinner next trip and while I wanted to book the Boathouse, I think we'll just do what you guys did and stop in for a drink. I can't believe how that waiter treated you, what the heck!? And especially in Disney, you wouldn't expect that kind of treatment. Wow!

I really enjoyed our solo trip, but I seriously can't wait to bring my kids next year! Thanks so much for reading :)

Grey Goose slush is my jam! It was also strange to not have it melt immediately. Sadly I only had one the whole trip because as soon as the cold weather hit, frozen drinks didn't seem as appealing!

Haha! Yes. The waiter was strange for sure. I ran into that a few times down there where they automatically present the check to my husband. Hellloooooo.....I paid for this trip too! It looked like you could maybe order a few apps out there but one drink was enough for me at the Boathouse.

Fiesta margaritas are the best! I've never had one with just one flavor!

Day 4 (cont) Dinner at Raglan Road
It's been like, -25 where I live, so I've been daydreaming about feeling the sun on my shoulders!!!!!! I can't believe I was in Disney 2 weeks ago. Seems like an eternity! Ok... where was I?

After our drinks at Boathouse we did a little bit more shopping, went over to House of Blues to grab a beer and to listen to the outdoor band. There was a line forming outside and it turns out Europe was playing there later! I am a huge Arrested Development Fan, so I almost got tickets just to hear 'Final Countdown". I love that song lol. Instead we went over to Raglan Road to have a cocktail and listen to their 3 piece Irish band playing outside.

I ordered a Raspy Old Fashioned:Dikel 12 Tennessee Whiskey, house made Guinness glaze, fresh lemon sour and homemade raspberry puree and Scott ordered a boring old beer. I think a Bass Ale? Later he would order the star drink of the night, a Whiskey Punch: Irish whiskey, apple cider, ginger beer, angostura bitters, candied ginger.597.JPG

My drink was delicious but it was VERY strong. This is a "one and done" type of cocktail in my opinion. But I nursed it for about an hour until our table was called. We were actually sat about 25 minutes after our initial reservation. It was absolutely JAM PACKED in the reception area. Actually, I remember Disney Springs to be very crowded in general. I'm not sure if people saw the rain in the forecast and didn't want to risk it ruining a park day, or the new shops and restaurants are really that big of a draw. The new area feels a bit narrow to me, which might have contributed to the feeling of it being crowded.

In any event, we were hungry, it had started to rain and they were running behind. We wedged ourselves at the packed bar and waited for our pager to go off. Out of all the meals, this one reminded me of what it's like to eat at Disney in high season. It was loud, chaotic and people were getting pushy and shovey. I was super glad to have the pager go off right as I was about to throw up my hands and give up on eating dinner.

We ended up at a high top table to the right of the stage. We had a great waiter who was prompt and courteous. Scott ordered the whiskey punch whereas I chose the Magners Pear cider and water with dinner. Scott's drink was incredible. I couldn't even taste the whiskey and the candied ginger made it really interesting and fresh tasting! Definitely worth trying if you're in the mood for a good cocktail. For a starter, Scott had the tomato soup and I just opted for the bread with guinness dipping sauce. The soup was absolutely delicious. I don't even like tomato soup ordinarily, but this soup really tasted like fresh vine ripened tomatoes. Like a burst of summer!

Looking at menus before coming I was convinced that I would get the Keen Eye Shepherd's Pie. But I just wasn't feeling it. I ended up getting Kevin's Heavenly Ham and Scott opted for the Lambo. My ham was delicious (maybe a hit on the dry side) and the mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned. Scott barely said a word during dinner as he was absolutely infatuated with his lamb dish. He maintains that it's the best lamb he's ever had. Sometimes lamb can taste a bit, gamey. But you really couldn't taste that at all until you got to the meat near the bone.

For dessert I ordered the Ger's bread pudding and a coffee.

610.JPG

LOL. Look at the size of this thing! How is this ONE dessert? I must say, I barely made a dent in this, which felt really wasteful. But good grief, it's like an entire pan of bread pudding! It was as good as everyone says it is. But just way too big for one person to tackle.

We paid up and left to find that it had POURED while we were inside. A chill had come through too and by the time we walked to our room, we decided to call it a night. We had Animal Kingdom in the morning!!!!!!

Day 5: Animal Kingdom and Biergarten

A cold front had blown in and temps were only supposed to hit 60 as a high. Now, normally where I live, everyone is in shorts having picnics when it's 60. But in FL it just feels colder. Maybe because it's damp or because you're out in the weather all day but I was really glad to have some cold weather clothes packed! In the mornings and at night it was only like, 48 which is chilly no matter where you live!

Not only did a cold front come in, but so did the crowds! There was a National High School Cheerleading competition of sone sort in the parks. If you ever want to feel old, fat and ugly, make sure you book your trip when they're down here LOL! I have to say, despite the throngs of teenage girls, they were VERY well behaved. No chanting or ridiculousness. There was just a lot of them.

We got to Animal Kingdom shortly after opening and it was already pretty busy. We had some time to kill before our Expedition Everest FP, so we decided to do the jungle treks.

I love these flags!

The animals were really active compared to other trips. Usually they're so hot that they just lay there. But the gorillas were super fun to watch. We got to see the babies which was adorable.
637.JPG

As you can see, I was in the front row because there weren't a lot of people when we first entered the viewing area. As soon as they woke up, a whole mess of people came in. Then they started banging on the glass and waving their arms as soon as the male gorilla woke up. He was literally right in front of me, looked right at me and I put my head down and we just walked on out of there.

640.JPG

FYI: Gorillas don't mess around. I was scared I would literally have a 500lb gorilla busting through that glass. Please don't bang on the glass. Just don't.

After Expedition Everest we went over to Flame Tree for lunch. I got the pulled pork sandwich and Scott got his turkey leg. He said it wasn't as salty as the ones you get in the park.

After lunch we went on the safari and saw Lion King. We made a pit stop at Tamu refreshments for these little beauties

658.JPG

Again, weird to have one of these that aren't 1/2 melted by the time you get it off the counter. It was actually hard to stir the rum because the dole whip wasn't really melting enough. Just cold weather Disney problems I guess! I prefer to have these on a hot summer day but it was still pretty delicious!

The park was a mob scene by 2:30, so we decided to head back to the hotel to warm up and nap. At around 5 we decided to go to WS and walk around before our 7pm reservation at Biergarten.

663.JPG

Cold and sunny!!!!!!!!!

We walked around WS, got some caramel corn and such at Karamel Kuche, saw some mariachi singers (always fun) and just talked and hung out. Stuff you don't really get to do when you've got two little kids! It was really nice to spend so much time with him. I remember feeling really relaxed and happy that afternoon (sigh!).

Scott and I checked into Biergarten a little early. We were able to snag an outdoor table by the fountain. There's a real lack of indoor seating here, and this poor woman was having to stand while she was nursing her baby. Nobody got up to offer her a seat and the employees didn't try and get her one either, so I had Scott drag a chair inside for her but they had already been led to their table. Anyway, I don't have any pics of the food at Biergarten. We got sat with 2 lovely older couples and was busy chatting with them. We made sure to get a pic with our steins tho! LOL. The food was really good and I remember LOVING the housemade pickles and the cold salads.

672.JPG

After dinner we found a quiet corner in Morocco to watch Illuminations. We thought it was quiet until we realized we were standing 5 ft away from one of the firework shooters! We had to put the shrub out in front of us because some of the flames actually caught it on fire! You're welcome, Disney.

After the fireworks, we went back to the room, hit the hot tub and were in for the night.

Hi There! Yes, I'm always amazed at how much walking is done in the parks. The 12 mile days I really felt in my legs and calves, but some days when I clocked like, 7 miles it didn't even feel like work. I guess it helped to burn all the calories we consumed :)

Day 6: Hollywood Studios and Rose and Crown dinner

We woke up bright and early again to a cold, but sunny morning. It was our Hollywood Studios day and because it was so chilly, we decided to take the boat rather than walk, which is what we normally do. Our first stop in the park was Starbucks as I was getting pretty sick of Jeoffreys coffee or whatever the heck it's called. We have a Starbucks in our office building, so I don't DIE over their coffee. I'm kinda over it to be honest. But we had some leftover snacks and I appreciate the fact that they don't jack up their prices just because they're in Disney.

Scott was really wanting to do Rockin' Rollercoaster and I totally did not. Of all the rides at Disney, this one scares me the most. Maybe it's that moment of sitting in the car knowing that you're about to be propelled into pitch black madness, or the fact that a friend of mine had to get evacuated from the ride and they turned on all the lights and she said it was even scarier with the lights ON that puts me into panic mode. I just didn't have the guts to do it this time around. So while he did single rider, I went over to try the infamous Carrot Cake Cookie. Now that Writers Stop is closed, they started selling them at Sweet Spells right on the corner.

683.JPG

I thought this would be a good breakfast choice--you know, there's carrots in it and raisins, so it's basically health food. I really really enjoyed this cookie. There was just the right amount of texture from the raisins and just enough cream cheese filling...not too much, which is what I normally find. It tasted really great and was nice and filling. I ended up eating this for 2 days!

My kids were with Scott's parents for the beginning of the week and my parents house for the end of the week until we got back. We FaceTimed with them every day and they were having so much fun they were barely missing us. It let us have fun knowing that our kids weren't like, crying themselves to sleep over us. Well, unfortunately, while I was sitting enjoying my coffee and carrot cake cookie waiting for Scott to get off the ride, I got a phone call from my mom. My DD (5) had thrown up twice the night before and was crying for me. She's only thrown up twice in her life, and so I imagined she was pretty upset about it. I found a quiet spot to FT her and poor thing looked terrible. Pale, dark circles under her eyes. So sad. Naturally, I was feeling very anxious and sad and missing my kids even more than I already was. Scott got off the ride and I filled him in. We made a plan to go back to the room after lunch and FT her again to check up on her.

Luckily, I made our FP's for the morning, so we went on ToT, TSMM, and Star Tours and grabbed a quick bite at Starring Rolls. Now, as stated previously this is, in my opinion, the only place worth eating at in HS. Although it tends to be pretty crowded and sometimes chaotic, the sandwiches and desserts are really yummy. I think it's a good value for DDP quick service.

I ordered the ham sandwich, water and a Darth Vader peanut butter cupcake. Scott ordered the pastrami on a pretzel roll and a fruit tart. Both of our sandwiches were delicious. Fresh tasting and really big! Scott's pastrami sandwich was the better of the two I think. The meat to bread ratio was better. I took out 1/2 the pile of ham from my sandwich. I don't know why they put so much inside those sandwiches. It's like a 1/2 lb of deli meat.

I was less than impressed with the infamous butterfinger cupcake the last time I was there, and because I already had cream cheese frosting on the carrot cake I didn't get the red velvet. I went for the DV cupcake and was really happy with. The frosting was rich without being sickly and the cake was moist (sorry for using that word!). Most importantly, the temperature was right on it. My butterfinger cupcake was ice cold on my last trip so the frosting ended up tasting like a cold stick of butter. DS actually just ate DV's head the other day as a treat :)

685.JPG

The crowds started to pick up after lunch, and we were getting really worried about DD, so we decided to call it a day on HS. I can't wait to see what they end up doing over there with Star Wars and Toy Story Land. But for us, HS is a 1/2 day park.

We got back to our room and FaceTimed with DD. She seemed a lot better and really just wanted to chat with us. After talking with her Scott and I decided to take a nap before dinner at Rose and Crown.

After our afternoon nap, we got up, showered and still had some time to kill before dinner. So we decided to go downstairs to check out the Crews Cup lounge and have a cocktail and maybe an appetizer. Crews Cup is located next to The Yachstman heading toward the Captain's Grille. It's really nice in there. Has an Adirondack/Lodge sort of feel to it. Lots of copper and wood with craftsman details. Tastefully and expensively done little lounge. I ordered a Mojito and Scott orderd a Long Island Ice Tea. The mojito was a nice change of pace from the very tart drinks I had over the week.

691.JPG

We met 2 really nice couples at the bar that we were chatting with. Northeasterners like us :) We were comparing snow horror stories lol. We were feeling a bit peckish after our nap, so we decided to try the truffle fries. I AM SO GLAD WE DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These fries were soooooo good. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of truffle oil. I feel like places are really heavy handed with it, but these fries had just the right amount of earthy flavor, salt and parmesan cheese. There was a shallot mayonnaise served along side that made the perfect dipping sauce. And for $5.50, it might just be one of the best values in WDW. I mean, these are like, the Rolls Royce of french fries.

Behold:
693.JPG

We were having such a great time, I ordered another mojito and Scott ordered a beer--maybe an IPA? I wasn't really paying attention, but he seemed pretty psyched about the beer selection.

After we paid our bill, we decided to head over to WS to get a couple souvenirs we had been eyeing for the kids and a R&C beer glass for my dad. As soon as we got out of the UK shops, the sky opened up and naturally, everyone ran into Rose and Crown. It was a crowded, soggy mess in there. We had a reservation in about 45 minutes, so we decided to grab a pint and wait. It was standing room only but we managed to find a little corner with a window ledge big enough for our drinks. It had seemed like people were really ready to tie one on at the Rose and Crown pub. The bar was about 3 deep all the way around. We ended up chatting with a group of crazy women that were there for a 40th birthday party. They were pretty wild! But really fun to chat with. What an awesome way to spend your 40th! There were a bunch of conference guys circling them like vultures. It was pretty funny. We had another pint before our pagers went off for dinner.

699.JPG

We had the loveliest waitress named Charlotte. She was friendly, courteous and prompt with our food and bill. We ordered the scotch egg appetizer. It was delicious, but I'm, not sure if I would order it again. It was $9.00 for one egg ultimately.

701.JPG

For dinner, I ordered the shepherd's pie and Scott ordered the NY Strip and fried fish. Both were excellent. Sorry I didn't get any pics, because as I stated above, I got distracted by the cocktail I ordered with dinner. I was feeling pretty warm inside at dinner, and after my beer, it seemed like a good idea to order one more drink with dinner. We weren't driving afterall! I ordered the English Rose: Beefeater Gin, Apricot Brandy, Sweet Vermouth, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, and Cranberry Juice served in a Souvenir Cu. I didn't really read the description because I certainly was not expecting the drink to come in this giagantic cup!

709.JPG

I definitely did NOT need to drink that whole thing. It was really delicious though. We ended up leaving with it after dessert and dumping it when we got to the park exit.

Looking at my pics, I did manage to take a pic of my banoffee tart (Yay me!) I did remember really liking this dessert. I love chocolate and bananas together and the pastry wasn't too thick. It was a nice little dessert.

712.JPG

We had a really fun day/night and with just one more full day, I would say that we were living it up before going back to reality!

Epic dining and drinking!! I love it! You have mentioned some fantastic drinks I am definitely putting on my list, particularly the whiskey punch at Raglan Road (I love candied ginger). I didn't drink very much on our last trip since I had a bad reaction to the heat, but I can see I have been really missing out!!

Yeah...the heat makes it hard to enjoy anything sometimes. The whiskey punch was awesome and I don't really like whiskey at all. It was pretty epic. I'm still drying out 2 weeks later!

Still, all the slushes! I could have been cooling off with Grey Goose or Grand Marnier slushes! I am kicking myself.

That drink at Rose & Crown looks good. Was it very strong? I'm not a gin drinker but I like all the rest of the stuff in it. My husband and I are going to try Rose & Crown for the first time on our June trip. The boys (15 & 12) are not into the menu so we are going to allow them to walk around Epcot and eat on their own while we have a date night.

I love Rose and Crown. It's not fine cuisine by any means but I love it for nostalgic reasons :) We go every trip. The English Rose was really good and didn't taste super strong. But after 2 pints it was too much for me to handle!

Following along and loving your dining report! Seems like you and your husband did a great job balancing doing lots of fun stuff with getting some relaxation in.

You totally cracked me up a few times in the report! First, loved that you know how much the box of wine weighs. I totally sent that little factoid to the girls I'm traveling with in April. So resourceful! Second I thought it was hilarious that you apologized for using the "m word" (moist). I almost used that in my own dining report last night but thought people would be too grossed out so changed it to "not dry." :lmao:

You guys have picked out some really great drinks to try. Last time I was in EP I finally tried the famous avocado margarita at La Cava and honestly wasn't a huge fan. I think next time I'll have to give the cucumber version a try. So many of the mixed drinks at Disney are either super sweet or super tart...I like the idea of having something more refreshing!

My mom is the one who actually weighs the wine LOL!!!!!!!! We have our room beverages down to a science. As a family, we will pack a cooler as luggage that we fill with wine, the big Jose Cuervo margarita jugs, stuff for cheese and crackers...we don't mess around on vacation. Disney cocktail hour is essential.

The avocado margarita looks thick to me. And I've got texture issues when it comes to cocktails. I can't get into bloody mary's because it's weird to feel like you're eating a drink...know what I mean? I would say that the cucumber margarita from La Cava and the Mizner's Cooler (soon to be discussed) were my favorite drinks of the trip. And I think it's because they weren't too sour. They were cool and refreshing. I look forward to seeing what you end up trying in your next TR!
