Chunkymonkey and Chubbyhubby's MAGICal 1st Disney Cruise - a May 2015 Trip Report! COMPLETED

Hi Su-Lynn,

Your report is great. We have talked about a Disney Cruise and your report really makes it sound wonderful. I am following along with much enjoyment.

Thank you Nanaji! I've always talked about a Disney Cruise and finally we went and I wondered why I had waited so long...I was a bit scared of cruising before but it's really different from what I expected and now I am potentially going on 2 cruises next year! (One DCL, and one either RCL or NCL)

After reading through your TR, it's making me want to go on a Disney cruise even more. Glad to see all the things an adult couple can do on the ship. We don't have kids, but are Disney fanatics! Might have convince DGF to change up the WDW trips and go on a cruise. :rolleyes1

Yes! Adults can have fun too on a Disney Cruise! There were a lot of adult activities too...and many adults only sections and bars/clubs. We honestly barely had time to go check them all out, and we couldn't make it to some of the mixology and wine/liquor tasting classes! Plenty to think about for next time!

I'm now caught up with both TRs! :D

Yay! great to see you here too!!

A cruise is such a great extended family trip... it allows everyone to do their own thing AND easily join up to do things together. Your niece is just adorable!

I am very open to the cruising lifestyle now...I know people who cruise 3-4x a year...and I used to think, wow, won't they get sick of it...but I know why they do it now! It's so easy and fun!

She is very cute! We don't see her often enough. Wish we live closer!

Your walking food tour in the Bahamas sounded awesome! That's my kind of tour! :thumbsup2

It was! Tons of fun...it was hot but worth it! :)

I LOVE all your Pirate Night outfits! That dress was perfect!

Thank you!!!
Castaway Cay looks so nice. :beach: I went on a Disney Cruise years ago (before Disney had their own ships) so I'd love to try it again and see their private island.

Wow, I didn't even know Disney had cruises without their own boats! Was it just characters on a cruise ship?

Wow, I didn't even know Disney had cruises without their own boats! Was it just characters on a cruise ship?

Yes, from what I remember. ::MickeyMo

Looking it up online, it appears Disney had an agreement with Premier Cruises in the 80's and early 90's before they started their own cruise line. We went on the cruise in 1988 - I think I'm due for another one!

Awww, last days are so hard! But at least you knew you still had a week at WDW to cushion the blow of leaving the ship. Your pictures are amazing!!! This TR really has me wanting to do another cruise!!! Hmmm February 2016 is sounding pretty good

Read your entire report - love the pics! I love the 2nd steak lunch - that is something we would do too lol!

Thank you! Thanks for reading! I call oursevles Hobbits at times because we love to eat....all day long!

YEAH!!! Feb 2016!! It'll be whole Dis Meet Cruise! Hehehe...
I just realize that cruises are the most fun when you have family and friends on board. But so far...no takers. So we'll see...it was an amazing cruise but it was made amazing by the presence of family. It was nice to eat with them at dinner instead of sharing a table with strangers. Not that that's a bad thing, but sometimes it can be awkward...:ssst::smokin::yoda::drinking:

Definitely think about it!!! :flower1::flower1::flower1:

Thank you so much for this report! We are on the Fantasy in September, so I will be sure to do a TR for you to return the favor! Definitely want to book the Magic for our next one in late 2016. We are trying for our second baby so timing is going to be a factor on exactly when that will be since I think you have to be at least six months old to sail.

Can you post a picture of the necklace? That sounds so pretty! I have a gift card to use on this upcoming cruise and didn't even think about jewelry!

Disembarkation...and on to WDW!!

Our last breakfast was at 7:30am at Animator's Palate. Not sure if this is the same for every cruise but your last day's breakfast is the same place you dined in the night before. It was nice to have one final sit-down meal before being kicked off the ship LOL.

Here we are docked at Port Canaveral in the early morning:

Animator's Palate had a standard breakfast menu - omelets, eggs, french toast, oatmeal, yogurt, fruit...etc. It was a sit-down breakfast and not a buffet. We sat in our regular table, #16. In actuality it was just like a regular rotational meal just not as long.
I thought I didn't take any pictures but it looked like I did!

I had fried eggs, bacon and sauteed onions with a hash brown. It was really good!

Here's Maddie showing Zsolt some tricks of her own:

We all said our goodbyes to Zsolt and Gerado. Hopefully we will see them again if we're ever on the Magic!

When we exited the MAGIC it was about 8:30am. We went out into the terminal and went to claim our bags. It was surprisingly easy, just find your character tags (we were Daisy) and find your bags. There were people to help us and if you tell them your stateroom they will find the location of your luggage.

We walked through immigration and handed our forms to customs. It wasn't long at all. All the lines moved quickly and pretty soon we were outside waiting for our Happy Limo to return us to the airport. We still had some time to wait until our Happy Limo came to pick us up. I didn't really know when to schedule pick up for, but I think if you have the early seating then 9am would have been better. I called the company to see if they could pick us up any earlier but they said the driver was en route and would be there as soon as he could. No problem we'll just hang out and enjoy the view. It was pretty windy around the port that morning!

I'm already missing the MAGIC!

We waited for a while and our driver finally came.We loaded up the van and were on our way back to MCO!

DH and I were headed to Magical Express where we will continue our trip with a week at WDW. Everyone else had flights back home to California but they weren't leaving until later that afternoon. Hopefully they won't be bored at the airport!

Saying our last good byes to Maddie at the airport:

Well except for us...as we're headed to... WALT DISNEY WORLD!!!

My sister, ChunkySis was flying down to Orlando today. We'll meet her later at our resort, the Art of Animation where we got a lovely Cars Family Suite. In the meantime...we're headed on down to Magical Express.

And our journey continues...

New TR: Chunkymonkey and Chubbyhubby Feed the Force!

Come join us on my new TR! We get to experience our first Star Wars Weekends, Flower and Garden Festival as well as the start of the 24 hour celebration at Magic Kingdom! Oh and we ate A LOT (as usual).

Hi Ashley! That's great! So excited about your cruise in Sept! And potentially 2016! :)
I will see if I can find a pic online or I'll just post a picture of it tonight when I get home.

What a wonderful TR!!! Yay :) I've been reading your WDW TR but haven't commented yet so I'm off to catch up on that one now!

I have so thoroughly enjoyed this TR!!! DH and I are already booked on the 3-night Magic in Feb 2016 or we'd totally book on the Fantasy (which we are booked in Sept 2016 so I really cant wait to ready your TR from your Feb trip on the Fantasy!!)

have really loved your TR! thank you for sharing :goodvibes

You're welcome! Thank you for reading!

Thank you! I'm kinda sad it's over, but glad to only have to post on one TR now! It was a lot of work but I'm really glad I captured all the memories...

Thak you! Yay! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Magic! Where is the 3 night going to? That's a short cruise!

I truly enjoyed reading your TR. We were on the Magic in 2011 for Halloween and had a blast. Booked on the Fantasy for this September and just found out that it is a Halloween cruise too.

Awwww, can't believe it's over already! Isn't leaving the ship the worst?! Especially when you see all the happy people getting ready to board "your" ship and their vacation is just starting... :sad2:

Loved the TR!!! And you're really making me want to do another cruise!!! It's been a couple years since my last one... high time I put some action to my plan!

I'm happy you still have your WDW TR going at least! :thumbsup2

We are going on the 3-night to Bahamas Feb 25th. Cannot wait to just cruise for the first time let alone on a DISNEY cruise!!

That sounds great! You will have a great time! I can't wait to cruise the Magic again!

I know! So sad!!! I am going to write a little epilogue just to continue the cruise TR just a little bit longer...hehe. But yes...it'll be nice to just focus on 1 TR from now on! I'm glad I did them both at the same time though, because I needed to write everything down while it was still fresh...I don't take notes so it's all from memories and pictures!
Definitely time for another cruise...the Feb 20th on the Fantasy seems like a good choice...:beach:

Nice wrap up to the report!

Love the pictures from Castaway Cay! That Serenity Bay is just beautiful! I really want o go on a Disney Cruise someday just to go there. I have been on lots of cruises but haven't tried DCL yet. That will change sometime soon I hope.

My 2 little nephews have very adult palates too. I don't know if they like sushi or tuna tartar but they love all other seafood and really like salad!

Cruise Epilogue...

Just so I can continue talking about this cruise for a little while longer (I literally cannot shut up about it to all my friends)...I thought to write a little epilogue of my thoughts on everything.

Things I'm glad I brought/done:

- Fabreeze or room spray. I'm glad a brought this as the bathrooms are small and tight...the shower curtain can get musty so I sprayed it all the time and it smelled much better! Plus our room always smelled nice.

- Downy wrinkle release. I'm lazy and I never iron. I always use this on my clothes to get them back in shape after sitting in a suitcase.

- Hanging toiletry organizer. Very handy and a huge space saver! The one I got was from target. It looks like this:
Orla_Kiely_hanging_cosmetic_2_zps34fab7ca.jpeg

- Reusable water bottle. We got some from camelbak but in all honesty mine started to leak...it's the one with the built in straw. I'd go for a simple one with a wide mouth and non-leaky screw top lid because then you can add ice to your water/drinks. The ones with the straw are nice but it can be hard to clean especially if you drink soda or coffee. I like to throw it in my bag so it's important it's not leaky for me, but if you like to carry it around while on the ship then the ones with the straws would work fine. Oh and double-walled because there is less condensation! Never knew so much went into choosing the perfect bottle but I'm still on the hunt for one. LOL

- I brought some cardigans because it does get cool during the evenings at the shows - one black and one white so they are neutral and go with all my outfits.

- 2 usb port wall charger. Fits into one outlet and charges 2 devices. There are larger ones with more outlets but the 2 was fine for me.
71AN1852W_BA_PF02.jpg

- Ziploc bags - can't get enough of them and I always pack like 3 different sizes!

- Brought stuff to sign and left with Guest Services on first night of cruise. This is probably the best souvenir! Bring t-shirts, pillowcases, frame mats, etc. and markers. It's free (well, technically nothing is free, but it's included in your cruise price) and now I have something pretty to display our pictures in!

adhrszGDkhDTVngyZEieI8dQKcOIHDxjPGwBTm6IqQuv=w965-h643-no

- Experienced ALL the restaurants for dinner. Since it was our first DCL cruise I thought it was important to attend every rotational dinner as long as the menu/theme was different. I had asked on the Dis Boards which night we should go to Palo and almost everyone said Pirate Night. We almost scheduled it on this night but in the end I'm glad I didn't as we loved pirate night at Lumiere's. Maybe it was made better because we were in a group and had family but we had a great time checking out the costumes, taking pictures and having fun with our servers. Even though we ate at Animator's Palate three times, each had a different menu and only one of them had the Drawn to Magic show.

- Brought Disney gift cards, rewards card from Disney Visa spending, etc. The Disney gift cards can be used in the stores and i think the spa as well, but the rewards card has to be taken to guest services to redeem. I had a bunch of dollars waiting to be used which covered my facial at Senses Spa :)

- Stateroom door decor. I'm so glad I did this as I felt like I was in college again...decorating our door made me really feel I was part of this cruise family...

Things I wish I had brought/done:

- A folder to store all the Navigators each day. I brought most of them home but they got all wrinkly in my suitcase

- More fitted dresses or shorts/capris because my flow-y and flare skirts and dresses would literally blow up in the wind on the upper decks...not pretty. I think a sheath dress or a heavy maxi dress would be fine.

- More fancy shoes. Cruises are a nice way to wear those heels! I love the way heels look but rarely wear them unless at work just because it's not comfy to walk in them when you live in a metropolitan area. I only brought one pair of wedges but wish I had brought more! It's comfy to walk on board the ship and you aren't walking that far at all. Plus if your feet hurt just go back to the stateroom and change...easy!

- An alarm clock. The staterooms don't have one and I don't want to keep picking up my phone to check the time. I didn't wear my watch after a while because I got a pretty bad watch tan...so a little mini battery-operated alarm clock would have been nice. (Don't get one that has to be plugged in as you want to save your precious outlets for your phone/ipad/kindle etc)

- Higher SPF sunscreen. I wear 50 all the time but I still got a weird face tan. The sun is really hot in the Caribbean so I think I should have worn 70 at least...and maybe 100 on my face! It has finally faded, so I look normal now. But in my WDW pics, my face is all different shades and I had to try and cover it up so I didn't look so odd.

- Ordered room service. Yup, didn't order it...either wasn't hungry or just not around or fast asleep. It's a shame as I consider it such a luxury...next time!!

- Eaten in one of the rotational restaurants for breakfast. We were very happy with Cabanas breakfast but we may change it up next time and go to a sit-down breakfast just to see what it's like.

- Palo for dinner...I initially did schedule this for our last night but in the end being with family for our last meal won out and we cancelled Palo. I think it's also because it was only a 5 night cruise...definitely would do this on a longer cruise...plus on the Fantasy we have Remy to try as well! So many meals...so little time...

- Ride the Aquadunk! Yes I know, I kept saying I wanted to do this but I just never found the time or was too busy doing other things! I'm not really big on water slides but I will make the exception for Disney...on the Fantasy I will try the Aquaduck!!

Things I brought but didn't need, or did that I wish I didn't:

- Too many lysol sanitizing wipes. I brought some but used maybe a third of what I brought...In all honesty, the staterooms are spotless. They are cleaner than airplane cabins. (which should be wiped down A LOT). I was really impressed with the cleanliness of the staterooms. I can understand a quick wipe when you first arrive though. just so any residual germs from previous tenants are gone. I will continue to bring them but just not as many packs as I had.

- Clothes. I tend to pack light but brought more clothes on this trip because I wanted to be prepared and have options. I could have brought 1/4 less clothes I think. and definitely leave the breezy dresses for below deck!

- I have a hot air brush that dries and styles at the same time. In all honestly I barely dried my hair and the stateroom has a dryer in any case. I think it would be nice if I had more formal dinners. We ended up cancelling Palo for dinner, so in all honestly I did my hair only once on the trip.

- Made spa appointments ahead of time. I booked before the cruise and in all honestly, I saw in the Navigators every day that there was some special pricing on treatments, usually on port days. I'd gladly give up an hour at port to get a nice massage at a discount. I may even try one of their spa sampler packages...so much cheaper than a full priced spa service!

And finally some thoughts on the best things about the trip:

- Best Service: Our entire team! Zsolt, Gerado, Branislav, Inka...they were all amazing and made our time spent on the ship so comfortable.
- Best Food: Palo was the best. I would pay for the upcharge.
- Best Restaurant Theme: Animator's Palate
- Best Rotational Restaurant Night: Drawn to Magic Show at Animator's Palate.
- Best Theater show: Dreams, an Enchanted Classic
- Best Outdoor Show: Pirate Night fireworks!
- Best Character meet: tie between Anna and Elsa, and the random Goofy run-in.
- Best place to take a break: Cove Cafe...air conditioned, lots of stuff to read, and real coffee!
- Best fast/quick service: Pete's Broiler Bites for the chicken fingers and fries.
- Best Port of Call on this cruise: I enjoyed all the ports on this cruise, but if I had to choose it would be Castaway Cay!

I can't wait to do this all over again!

Thank you! A DCL cruise is definitely an experience. I think it spoils you though...I am not quite sure I'd have as much fun on other cruises. It's definitely the characters, the themes and overall Disney Magic.
I think kids palates these days are definitely changing! Although I do know a few kids who only eat chicken and fries, hopefully they can grow out of it as there is so much beautiful food in this world!
