Avatar land coming to Animal Kingdom!!

I dont know if I like that. Although I would love to experience Avatar I dont like the idea of Disney buying blockbusters. Disney has always been "kiddie" in their purchases (pooh, muppets, power rangers). They have the comics now but havent tried to integrate them yet. It just worries me. What if they lose the Disney charm? :confused3
They supported naked Vanessa whatshername and Miley Cyrus' underage soft porn. They are currently showcasing Michael Jackson at Epcot.

We've come a looooong way from Annette and the charm of Disney.

Nail, meet coffin...where's the hammer?

The problem is that it's really polarizing--Avatar, while being very pretty, was the sort of annoying environmental extmism that alienates about half of the country. And the sort of leftist who salivated over Avatar isn't a large part of Disney's demographic; they'd rather go somewhere "authentic."

The environmentalism certainly fits in with Animal Kingdom, but is likely to do so less in the "reasonable steward of the Earth" style that permeates most of AK, and more in the nagging "people are evil" style found more at Rafiki's Planet Watch. And that's the reason I don't go to Rafiki's Planet Watch any more.

They should be able to make some good rides out of it, but Beastly Kingdomme or Night Kingdom were better ideas.

WOW, call me leftist then if I care about the environment, and what's being done to our planet. Avatar Land is a great idea. Those who don't care for it, should just avoid this land, and not complain . Better yet, let's all sign a petition for Disney to bring DisneySea to WDW. :thumbsup2

The movie made scads of money. If the franchise manages to continue it's success...it's a nice pickup for WDW.

Wonder if they'll open it in phases, or all at once (around 2015)?

Either way, one thing for sure: LOTS more construction photos will be popping up.

Wonder WHERE they're going to put it? On the pad that was to house Beastly Kingdom?

Sorry, but this is one hard-core leftist who is also a Disney fanatic. We do exist, you know.

I have serious problems with the plot of the movie, and I have some issues with the technology to create it, but you have to admit, this movie is a towering landmark in animation technology. The "look and feel" are gorgeous, regardless of the plot, and far beyond anything that the existed before. And, let's be honest, the finer points of the plot are going to be lost in the translation to rides -- it is the look and feel and the broader elements of the plot that will be the stars

I think that this is an excellent thing..I have seen the movie about 5 times..(I own it) The movie being in AK is the best possible place as well.. The movie is about how we treat mother nature and each other and if Disney incorporates the visuals from the movie it will be mesmorizing.. :cool1:

Their opportunities to integrate the comics are limited, given the contract with Universal.

This would have been a huge draw for AK if it opened 2 years ago.

Yeah, I agree with you. They're about 2 years too late.

ETA: And by the time this "land" actually opens, people will be saying "Avatar who?" This idea is NOT going over well on Disney's Facebook page. ROFL

I've never seen the movie but we all know James Cameron is over the top.
"Over the top" is the phrase people generally use to say "crazy" without actually saying it.

James Cameron took the story of the Titanic and instead of doing the actual, very moving stories that took place on that ship...decided to do a love story with nudity and have a gun chase. :sad2:

Avatar was not a good movie. It had good special effects, which is all that is needed to impress young people today...but the movie actually sucked.

James Cameron does not impress me. At all. Well, except for Terminator. Have to give him props for that.

Oh joy a "Dances with Smurfs" land. Maybe it's just because the movie disappointed me so much. Everyone was telling, "Oh you have to see it..." and they failed to mention that it had the exact same plot of Dances with Wolves on with blue aliens in place of Native Americans. The only thing I did like about the film was it's effects and that it was very pretty in 3D.

I really don't know what Disney can do with this to make it worthy of a full land. I can see a ride, but a land?:confused3 I love Animal Kingdom, but this I just don't get.

Absolutely!!! When I first read the news I was wondering where the "People are evil" ride will go. Beautiful film - to polarizing.

sheesh....

Actually, there is now a contract for 2 more movies, that I am sure will be just as big a blockbusters. Avatar Land is projected to open shortly after the last movie does, so there will be a big kick there.

ETA: And I imagine the contract for the further 2 movies was a predicator of the timing of this. If there were only going to be the one, I don't think it would have been big enough buzz to create a whole Land around.

Which is fine. And, IMHO, you're not far off the mark. For me, they're good popcorn flicks...and I didn't expect any more from them.

The thing is, though...there are obviously SCADS of folks who disagree with you. You just talked about 2 of the highest grossing movies of all time....and while I agree: They're not modern masterpieces of cinema (maybe of cinematography, though), you can't argue about the commercial success they've garnered.

For every person who watches Avatar and Titanic and sees a hackneyed plot with thin characterization and a predictable ending.....there are at least a couple thousand who decided to go multiple times to see it.

I think it was more like Fern Gully on steroids.

Nope, Dances with Wolves was an amazing movie. Avatar was just a rip-off of it, with no original plot points other than adding outerspace and 3D technology. Like I said, everyone hyped it up to me and I guess the let down of actually seeing it just sucked all chances of Avatar love out of me.
