Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout

I hear that they've spent a boatload of money in China, and I know that they're spending lots of money domestically in Anaheim and Orlando. I'm glad that they're doing all of that work. ...but to take a great, original and beloved attraction like ToT and do a retheme on it just smells cheap - like they've spent all their money on those other three projects so they'll just hang Galaxy colored curtains over the ToT. Do people not enjoy the ToT on the West coast? Is it not popular? That's the only reason I can think of to do this.

I've been disappointed with Disney in the past, but this is the first time that I can think of them doing something so blatantly cheap AND stupid at the same time in the Parks. Thumbs down to this move.

DCA's Tower is just as popular as the Florida version. I think the whole point of this overlay is to transform that area of the park into a Marvel land, and the current Tower probably didn't fit in their plans. There's quite a significant space for future development in that corner of the park, so naturally, a Marvel land was destined to go in there. This is just the first step.

I am yes, apologies I should have made that more clear. I think it's the way Disney are going now. We are losing the originality. They want to make things easier for themselves because it's too hard and much more expensive to come up with separate ideas and building new rides instead of making over new ones.

Just my initial reaction, very upset with this news and probably a bit angry about it so a knee jerk reaction.
I can guarantee you it's not too hard for imagineers to come up with originality. The problem is executives don't want to risk anything. Haunted mansion, Pirates, tiki room, big thunder, space, etc. would never be built with today's management. If it doesn't have a major IP tie in it's too risky.

Everest for WDW.
Many don't count that because it wasn't revolutionary and has a broken yeti. While the Everest has incredible theming it's just a roller coaster. Even if you count the yeti that's still 10 years ago.

Reeeeally hoping this is a "change it on one coast/keep it on the other" situation. I'll chain myself to the HS ToT if I have to.

Frozen Ever After uses the same exact vehicles, ride system, and track as Maelstrom. The only thing they changed was the theming of the rooms inside it. There is no way it's more complicated than the proposed changes for ToT. Just based on the artwork, the exterior alone is more complicated...I would normally say, nobody knows what they're going to do to retheme ToT, but with that short timeframe, I would say the answer is "not much" and "slap-dash" and "cheap".
Yes it uses the same vehicles and same ride system but the track is in fact different.

Maelstrom had separate load and unload stations for frozen they combined those where the unload station for maelstrom was. The theater where the Norway movie was played was taken out and made queue space. The area where the load station was became part of the ride. The track was altered and became an s shape instead of just going straight. Two show scenes were then added in that s shape area. Frozen also has some very advanced AAs which makes things more complicated. AAs like that almost need almost 6 months to get tested and adjusted.

Exactly. The Energy Pavilion is begging to be replaced or comprehensively refurbished. Disney, PLEASE do something with it! While you're at it, work over Imagination, Wonders of Life, Innoventions & Oddessy.
Imagination will have to wait longer, wonders of life has a plan that's a GOTG phase 2, innoventions has major plans, but no plans for the Odyssey either.

The rumor is that a Marvel Land is in the plans for that area and the GOTG overlay is just part of the plan. Would make sense that they did the overlay with a lesser property.

The quote about the future of DCS entering a whole new universe would back that up.
Yep major plans in the works for a marvel land at DCA.

We just don't agree, but I think history is on my side. People move on. Period. If that wasn't the case, you'd have had an exodus when they rethemed or removed any number of rides. Yet attendance increases over time.

There's how one might feel, and then there are facts. The latter are on my side here.

I think if this was happening at WDW, you would have a different tune on the matter. And IMO, there has not been a ride removed that is as beloved as TOT to begin with.

Either way, Marvel won't be coming to WDW. It will stay in California.

Marvel very likely will be coming to WDW at Epcot if all goes to plan.

Well this is Disneyland not WDW. This is also not as extensive as maelstrom was. The ride system and vehicles are staying exactly the same. It's just a simple theming change. I'd argue maelstrom was more complicated.
The exterior makeover seems optimistic to finish in that timeframe imo

The universal deal with never stop. IMO it will never happen. Its just not possible unless universal allows them to use the rights, which will never happen.

My personal feelings aside on this ( I find it frustrating Disney seems more inclined to overlay and reimagine rides rather than create new ones), on its own this announcement didn't make much sense to me. ToT was a huge icon in this park that could be seen from all over and it worked because of its tie in with hollywood land. Sticking this in between Hollywood and Bugs would just seem misplaced and way off theme. This surely has to be a first step into a greater marvel expansion. I'm not sure where the expansion would extend and what other attractions would be causalities in this but there has to be a greater overall plan here.

Don't think Disney cares much about theming anymore.

This is 3 rants I was working on, let me just plop them here instead of starting another thread.

We just had confirmation of a Marvel area coming to California Adventure. There are also rumors of Guardians of the Galaxy coming to Epcot. So I have to ask; does Disney have a vision for the parks? Do they have a unified vision of what they want each park to be or are they just trying to capitalize on IPs by just putting them in where they can?

Hollywood Studios has lost every attraction that connected it to the studios theme. California Adventure is only connected by visuals and with the addition of Marvel that visual will become more blurred (Especially since most Marvel stories take place around NY, I don’t think the land is gonna be based on the West Coast Avengers or Runaways). Soon in the future we are expected to hear changes come to Epcot. Epcot a park that was supposed to celebrate culture and creativity. Our progress and our past. The innovations of our imagination and our impact on the planet. Yet rumors seem to be making it about Princess and thrills.

I know Iger said he wanted to make the most use of Disney’s IPs but I wonder if this method is the best way to do so or even if they fit in the parks (they are going in) all. Attractions need to be organic and feel natural. If they don’t fit in their surrounding it doesn’t take away from the ride, it takes away from the park. So far they have done well so far by creating cohesive lands, such as Star Wars and Avatar. This GoT announcements is not that; it is just an attraction with a unique visual style that is going to be plopped into the middle of park. Even when the Marvel land is built it will likely be more earth base so this attraction could still stick out.

Additional I think the majority of Disney’s successful attractions have been original concepts. Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Expedition Everest. While IPs can make great attraction there is a challenge to doing them. That is trying to include the things the audience wants to see into the ride but you are limited by the ride and technology. With a original IPs you don’t have this hurdle. Even though Universal gets plenty of hate for their use of screen they are one of the best ways to achieve this. Screens allow for the easy inclusion of those action sequences and actors (believable ones, I’m looking at you Ellen animatronic) that the guests want to see.

So I hope before any more announcements are made Disney sits down in the optometrist chair and makes sure they are seeing the bigger picture of the parks.

Guardians is not part of the universal/marvel contract. Guardians can be used in WDW.

Hollywood studios is getting a whole revamp and isn't gonna be movie studio themed anymore. I'm thinking it'll make much more sense and be rebranded when everything's opened.

I agree about Epcot but unfortunately the spirit of that park is pretty much lost and stale as much as it pains me to say. As @lockedoutlogic I believe once said, and I have to agree, the internet killed Epcot.

This is so accurate! And a large part of the reason that I'm very frustrated with the current management at WDW. The parks were built on creative rides, built with innovative technologies--things you couldn't find anywhere else. The rides such as PotC and Haunted Mansion will be favorites for years and years because they were well-designed and cleverly thought-out. The newer things (such as TSMM or even The Little Mermaid) just aren't as magical
