My Year of Disney BEGINS: a little Running, a little Drinking: PTR **1/12-W&D-Day 8**

Commando Trip Day 2 - 7/18

I was up bright and early, despite the previous night, and once again met BFF+Hubs along the way to DL. We made rope drop and even had time to go into Market House (Starbucks) to get our fix for the morning. It had already been decided that Peter Pan was our first priority. We made good time through the castle after the rope dropped, but it was an EMH morning, so quite a few people were already in line. We decided to go for it anyway because the line was not going to get any shorter, only longer. We entered the line right outside the 50 minute wait placard and started timing our wait. It really wasn't too bad at all since it was early and still cool outside. There was some silly excitement at entering the indoor portion of the queue.

We actually got on Peter Pan at exactly 8:50AM. I guess Disney knows their line wait times after all these years. I loved all the upgrades. It looked fresh and new and reinvigorated. :)

After PP we decided to go to the other side of the park with the same strategy I used during my June trip. We cut through the Hub to Adventureland and got an Indy Fast Pass; then we rode Pirates, Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain with basically no lines. We went back and used our Indy Fast Pass and then decided to head over to Big Thunder Mountain. By this point I was getting warm and glad we had to stand in line for a little while. Not long though!

From BTMR we walked through Fantasyland over to Space Mountain to get fast passes for later. At this point we were getting hungry and I'd have been happy to sit down for awhile at Redd Rockett's Pizza Port (not my favorite dining establishment), that's how ready I was for a break. But we pushed on to DCA. My only request was that we ate somewhere inside...and for DCA, counter service + inside = Smokejumpers Grill. I hadn't eaten there since the reimagining from Taste Pilot's Grill, but I really love what they've done with the area as a whole, turning it into a 50's era National Park. I think it's superb. So Smokejumpers Grill it was, where I ordered the Grilled Chicken and Feta Salad. I just could not deal with anything warm at that point. The salad was pretty tasty. The only issue was that they forgot to give me dressing, so I had to go back and wait for a bit at the window to get a packet.

After lunch we got a Soarin' Fast Pass since we were in the area, and then made our way over to CA Screamin' and the Paradise Pier area. We got in line for Screamin' and noticed that it was starting to drizzle. The skies had been growing more overcast and the humidity was definitely increasing throughout the day. So we screamed on Screamin' and afterwards the BFF and I decided to ride the Fun Wheel - the Swinging side. To me, the Swinging side of the Fun Wheel is the scariest ride on property. We rode it. We survived. It was actually considerably less intense than my first ride because they only cycled us through one time, instead of usual two times around, once while loading and then one time around without stopping. Oh well, once around was enough for me!

BFF+Hubs looove Toy Story Midway Mania, so that's where we ended up next. It was about a 40 minute wait but we had enough time before our Soarin' FP return time to get it in. This ride has always been 'meh' for me. It's cute but for my enjoyment it doesn't justify the wait times. And all the shooting makes my shoulder sore. I got my usual dismal score and we exited the Pier to head back to Soarin'. First we stopped for ice cream at Paradise Pier Ice Cream Co. The BFF and I abstained because we were waiting until a bit later to have our very. First. Dole. Whips! :) Soarin' was great as usual, but for the first time it made me a bit nauseated afterwards. It was also the first time I've been in the theater on the left. Not sure if that could've had anything to do with it.

By this time it was doing more than drizzling, it was raining in earnest. Not quite a downpour, but enough to say that it was raining. We crossed the Esplanade and saw some activity right in the middle where the colored tiles make the design. It had been cordoned off and there were officers milling around. We guessed that someone had slipped and fallen when the tiles became slippery from the rain. We pressed on to Space Mountain and used our Fast Passes. From there were went back through the Hub to Adventureland and the Tiki Juice Bar. I'd heard so much, for so many years, about the great Dole Whip. Yeah, it's almost all that. I think it would've had to have been covered in diamonds to live up to the hype, but I really did enjoy it. We ate them in the rain and then going from store to store down Main Street to try to stay dry.

After all that it was still only around 3:15PM. We had a 5PM Wine Country Trattoria World of Color reservation and lots of time to kill. We did quite a bit of Emporium browsing and then headed back to DCA where we looked at just about all of their shops, including Carsland. Radiator Springs Racers was down because of the rain and we heard that Tower of Terror was down because of lightning in the area. Creepy. We got into Wine Country Trattoria a few minutes early since we were just waiting around by that time. I started with the Salad: arugula, fennel, red onion, spiced walnuts, and goat cheese with a fig-balsamic dressing. Very nice. Next was the Seafood Pasta: spaghetti tossed with sauteed jumbo shrimp, scallops with garlic and herbs in a light pomordoro sauce.

004 (640x480).jpg

Finally, dessert was a mini-dessert array. Meh. I'm not a mini-fan. They were, Trattoria Tiramisu, European Macaroons, Caramel Chocolate Panna Cotta and Lemon Cream Puff. The lemon was my favorite because I'm a sucker for lemon. Always. WCT lived up to it's reputation with me. Fine and serviceable, but nothing truly memorable or special.

After dinner we headed over to Tower of Terror to check out the wait time situation. 40 minutes, not too bad. ToT is probably my favorite ride in the whole park, so the wait was no problem for me. The theming and music are so wonderful and add so much to the experience, I just love it. I made sure I was in the very front of the TV screen in the pre-show. When the lights were out and the Twilight Zone feature played I could almost imagine that I was alone in the room. In the gift shop I bought a pretty purple ToT shirt (shocker) and a hotel key keychain.

We relaxed for a little bit on a bench outside the ride exit until it was time to make our way over to World of Color. We got there a little before 8:30PM and took our spots in the second row of people right in front by the railing. I'm short, so my view was already blocked for the most part. Practically minute by minute until the show started, I could feel myself being pushed in on both sides, and forward from the growing crowd. Not a good feeling for me. I tried doing some deep breathing to keep from going into panic-mode and it helped a bit. Finally, the show started (a few minutes late because the fireworks at DL had been moved up to replace Paint the Night, which had been canceled because of the rain) and NPH was talking. And talking. For me, this new version of World of Color dragged. It's true that my feet were in agony and claustrophobia was setting in. And my view was mostly blocked. But I have to agree with the consensus...World of Color-Celebrate! is kind of a dud.

So during the day I'd been making noises that I wasn't going to ride Grizzly River Run. I just had no desire to schlep around all day in soaking wet clothes. The last time I rode it I got soaked, but I'd made sure to make it the last ride of the day. After WoC where I'd felt so constrained and squeezed, I suggested going on GRR because I needed something refreshing to blow off steam. To be honest, I didn't even like the ride itself the first time I rode it, even beyond the getting drenched part. But I needed something. And it was awesome! I barely got wet and the BFF got soaked. I loved it! We exited GRR at 9:57PM and I said we have 3 minutes to get back in line. No takers. Bummer.

We left DCA and briefly started to head back to DL. However, we realized there was nothing left on our list of things to do. So we headed to DTD instead to get some Haagen-Dazs. Then I realized that I didn't want any and it was time for me to head back to the hotel. We said goodnight, I walked back, and promptly sacked out.

I keep hearing good things about the upgrades on Peter Pan ... I can't wait to see it! (Only about a year until I get back to the West Coast ... hopefully)

I'm very impressed that you went on the swinging side of Fun Wheel. That's something I refuse to do. I think you deserve some sort of medal for being willing to do it and surviving.

I loved World of Color when I saw it a few years ago, so I've been pretty sad everytime I read that the new version isn't very good. How could they ruin something that amazing? I'm really hoping they call Celebrate a failure and go back to the old version. At least you got a nice non-soaked ride on GRR to make up for it.

I get the feeling that they booked NPH and then felt like they had to get their money's worth. All the narration breaks really bogged down the show. I have heard people complain that the original WoC didn't have a 'story', but I think it had so much more emotional power than the new version and I didn't like how Star Wars felt so tacked on. Like, oh we have a huge movie opening, let's promote it any way we can type of a feeling. It just didn't belong, especially in a show that was supposed to pay homage to Walt, the man.

Your commando trip sounds awesome! You are seeing so much. I've never been to DL - so it's fun to hear about it. Some day - I might get there. ::yes::

Oooh - and your spa stuff sounds amazing (and expensive) - but worth it, I am sure. ::yes::

Your food and itinerary that day sounds amazing, as well. :)

Those spa treatments sound awesome! That sounds like a great way to relax.

I know! I'm especially excited for the Bubbly Bath Body Treatment. Even my skin will be drinking on vacation! ;)

I can almost guarantee that once you run in your first runDisney race, you'll soon feel the pull of the C2C medal! It's a great excuse to pop over to DL!

Yeah, the spa stuff is a big splurge, for sure. But I remember all the spa days I've had in the past very well and have enjoyed them immensely, so that's how I justify it to myself. I've also got a spa day lined up for my Wine and Dine trip. :woohoo:

So I did my weekly weigh-in this morning before my run. You guys, I am getting frustrated. I have been gaining and losing the same 3lbs for a couple of months now. But, according to the scale, I have lost another 3 body fat percentage points. I am hoping that's accurate and my body is just rearranging itself WRT to fat vs muscle and the actual pounds will start falling off at some point soon. :confused3

Commando Trip Day 3 - 7/19

I started the morning by getting ready and then packing up the hotel room. I typically don't unpack on vacation, so this makes things a little easier on departure mornings. I went downstairs to the lobby to check out and then used my coupon at the bar for a free drink - coffee. Was it too early for me to start drinking, being the vacation lush that I am? No. I just didn't have time for a real drink because the BFF+Hubs were already outside waiting to pick me up. So I got my coffee to go and piled myself and my belongings into their truck. We made the long, 2 minute drive over to the DL Hotel and stopped at the gate to tell the attendant we were there to have breakfast at Steakhouse 55. The poor guy then proceeded to stumble out of his station while handing us the validation ticket and fall on the ground. He was okay, just embarrassed. So then we parked and got to walk through the grounds of my favorite resort of the three at DLR. (Although I have yet to stay at Paradise Pier-which will be remedied in May for Tink weekend.)

We arrived at SH55 and were seated in the very low-key and cool dining room. We were underneath the Charles Laughton and Carole Lombard picture for any TCM fans out there. I ordered my usual Buttermilk Stack with Warm Berries with a side of bacon for good measure. I was pretty hangry after all the walking we did the previous day. Breakfast was wonderful as usual and the Hubs of BFF (like the Bride of Frankenstein) wondered why they'd never eaten there before.

From there we walked to Downtown Disney and BFF+Hubs began their ritual of departure day shopping. What did I do? I decided to relax at Uva...

005 (640x480).jpg

First, I started with the Tiger Lily mimosa (orange juice, cranberry juice and champagne).

006 (640x480).jpg

Next, I went with the Uva Sunrise (tequila, orange juice and champagne float). It had been a long time since I'd had something with tequila IIRC. Long story, short, tequila and I are still not on good terms. My day drinking was over too soon as I got the text that shopping time was about over and I began heading over to World of Disney. On the way, I made MY most important stop - Marceline's candy store. I got some pre-made bags of sour balls and taffy, along with some fudge and a couple of other treats, like the Peanut Butter Sandwich. :worship:

Soon we were all checked out and paid up and ready to hit the road. By this point I was getting really nervous about how my kitties had fared over their lonely weekend. The drive home was a breeze compared with the same route a few weeks earlier - no wildfires or terrible road construction to bring things to a halt. We stopped for lunch at Le Grand Taco Belle aka, Want to Feel Like You Just Ate a Brick? I will admit that it tasted good in a horrible way. ;) A few hours later I was home in 100 degree+ weather (back to reality, oh there goes gravity). I opened the door and there they were, two bratties running toward me. Elektra (the calico) scolded me with angry meows and then ran away. James didn't even make it to me at the door. He just ran into the bedroom and hid under the bed. I checked the food and water and there was still plenty left of both, thank goodness. I was rightly ignored for a couple of hours by both of them, but eventually both of them came up to me and wanted pets. By bedtime everything was fine and I was being cuddled once again. :cat: :cat:

Okay, I'm finally caught up on trip reports. Now it's all planning and updates until Wine and Dine. And I promise to take more pictures on the upcoming trips!

Finished reading this morning but got interrupted before I could say thanks! Looking forward to the next chapter.

Your last day sounds great! All of the food numminess is making me hungry... I was supposed to go grocery shopping yesterday, and I didn't. I should have gone today, and I didn't. Literally - we have 3 things in our fridge. :scratchin Maybe tomorrow? LOL

Your drink sounds great, but I'll be honest - I've never tried tequila that I know of, so I am not sure how well it would set with me?

Glad your kitties forgave you for leaving and you had a safe trip home. :)

I think a little goes a long way with tequila. My bad past experiences have now made the taste of it a bit repulsive to me. So I'll be sticking to my rum from now on!

I completely understand you for that! I've been there before (and I'm pretty sure I haven't lost anything this month with the flipping back and forth for the same couple pounds)

At least you know your fat percentage is going down. Are you taking measurements as well? I find that helps me feel better when the scale seems to just not be working to lose anything for me.

I thought I replied to this yesterday... Not sure where my reply went?

I feel your pain... I've been fighting the same size for a year now... I am really frustrated, even though I say I am not, I really want to be at my goal size I work really hard day after day, and I know a person cannot out work a bad diet, but a person can only refine their diet so much. I guess I really need to just bite the bullet and eat less... Sigh.

So... I guess I don't have any great advice... Just keep working it, you'll get there. :)

I haven't taken measurements. Bad, I know. But my clothes keep getting bigger and I can feel the muscle definition increasing. I have definitely lost weight in my face...that seems to be one of the first places I notice gain or loss. I am very happy about losing 9% body fat in pretty short order, but I'm sure you'll agree, there's just something about that stupid number on the scale, lol.

As much as I talk about food and do indulge on trips, I really try to watch it everyday life, as I'm sure you do. Like you said, you can't out work a bad diet. Right now I'm trying to stick to 1800 calories a day or less. According to the MyFitnessPal app that would put me at a 1lb loss per week. But my number just isn't moving! We are both working hard and I'm very proud not to be taking any dangerous shortcuts. (Liquid diet, pills, etc.) I know we'll get there!

I'm with you on the weigh-ins ... it's really frustrating when the numbers keep going up and down. But from everything I've read, it takes your body a while to adjust to a new routine. As you gain more muscle it might take time for the weight to come off (because the new muscle adds weight), but I think it will happen eventually.

Your last day sounds nice and relaxing ... minus the tequila. At least now you know for next time to avoid anything with tequila!

I agree that it WILL happen eventually. I'm just in a Veruca Salt mode at the moment... 'I want it NOWWWWWWWWW!!!' I should have more patience. I certainly don't want to end up with the bad eggs, after all.

I'm here, I'm here! :cutie: I will warn you, I am TERRIBLE at keeping up, but I do try my best!

Also, I am jealous... I WANT A WHOLE YEAR OF DISNEY, OMG. :hyper:

Hee, hee. Peeps in my real life think that I'm nuts with all this Disney. I'm so glad that everyone here understands! :grouphug:
