2015 destash - Purge Purge Purge, Purge is the word

Small bump. Someone mentioned that the local women's shelter would gladly take books and puzzles, so those are gone. I'm glad to know they're in a place where they'll be used. Also, after months of no interest on some of my Facebook/Craigslist items, today there were multiple requests on a couple. Totally weird, it's almost like people only become interested in an item when they see someone else wants it. Whatever it is, 2 more lots are gone so I'm happy. Now I need to go through my dresser and bag up everything I haven't worn in a year. I have a bad habit of wearing the same items and just grabbing them from the clean laundry basket rather than actually putting them away in the dresser.

I can relate to the laundry issue. I, too, wash a ton of clothes and then it seems like it sits around for days before the clothes actually make their way back into my family's closets and dressers. I placed a basket of clean socks that needed to be sorted in my teenage son's room a week ago and it is still there. He hasn't put them away yet. I am not sure which of us will cave first. I think I might have to take away his phone until he puts them away.

I'm happy to report all paper hoarding has stopped.

Filing system is in place and color coded to perfection.

Attic is empty of the paper hoard and Im down to my last 7 evil boxes of papers.

I would like to thank my shredder for being a champ.

Good for you! Wow! Thanks for the inspiration. If you can do it and survive, so can I!

Brand new to this thread! Hubby and I just started a round of spring cleaning today, and I'm desperate to get more stuff out of our little one bedroom apartment. I love organization, but I'm a paper hoarder, and I really just never learned to deal with stuff that I don't immediately know where to put. So I need y'all's constant inspiration! Thanks for the thread!

Paper hoarder was the last of my org skill that I had to learn.

This link is great for pointing you in the right direction of where to start of what you need to keep.

http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Money/Personal-Finance/Managing-Household-Records.shtml

I also choose not to keep anything I can get online like manuals for appliances unless they are still under warranty.

http://justorganizeyourstuff.com/joys/filing-system-how-to/filing-system-start#.VSCxcvnF-So

What I have learned this year is that there is no one way to do a filing system, keep it simple, keep it do able, for you.

1. pick a day each week to deal with papers - thursday am here
2. open mail over a trash can daily
3. always remember your the only one that can defeat the paper hoard

Last year I switch all our bills over to online, no paper, auto pay. except one that doesn't do paperless or auto, ironically its the trash bill. :rotfl2:

Thanks so much for posting the links!

I, too, think it is ironic that the only bill you cannot do online without paper is the trash bill!

Currently, I am working on decluttering like never before. We are moving to a new home and I do not want to fill it with my old clutter! I recently weeded through my Easter and Fall decorations and some of my Christmas stuff. Easter is down to one bin and Fall is down to two. I need to reduce it to one as well.

Or biggest problem is PAPER!!! Both my husband and I have trouble with it. He even saves the envelopes everything comes in and puts things back in each envelope. He does have many of our bills now online so, that has reduced a lot of what has been coming into the house.

You can do it!!!!

Start with a clean system of where to put all the papers, then dump all papers in boxes and just start going through them... Its long its hard, but once its done its easy to maintain.

I did survive rooting out all the junk in the Disney paper boxes. We had a grand time doing it. I was so stressed that I would cry or just end it, but nope girlfriend support was just what I needed..

They did have a great time loling at all the paper madness I saved from Disney..

I'm free and it feels good!!!!

Hey all! How's it going??? Another cool rainy day here.... perfect for a PURGE DAY! I've got to get some exercise done and then I will be purging and cleaning. Haven't quite decided what area to tackle yet. The garage project has to wait until I have 2-3 days in a row.... so probably not for a few weeks. Today might be the Christmas decor or a small corner of the basement. I'll report back later~!..............P

Did not get rid of as much as I wanted this month with all that was going on but still a good amount of stuff has left the house!! :)

Last year my dh was cleaning out a lot of things but since Feb he has been concentrating on his parents house. His father died in Feb and he has been the only one to work on the house and yard. His mom is still alive but is 87 and can't do much. His sister who lives there with her significant other has done very little and has fought him on throwing things away. He really can't throw anything away until his brother goes through things during the middle of May. He is coming from Kansas so there may be very little that he can bring home with him unless he wants to spend a lot on shipping. My dh says after his brother leaves all bets are off. But that means he is cleaning that house and not doing things around here.

I on the other hand have 2 months to clean out 38 years of stuff in my classroom before I retire in June. Then I can spend the summer getting my sewing space in order so that I can really get to work on my quilts.

I was recently able to declutter the whole house and our storage unit. So exciting! We donated half to the 4H yard sale and the other half we're going to try to sell on online yardsale sites to help pay for our upcoming trip. It's all stashed in the dining room now but it's such a relief!

In the past 2 weeks I have purged about a dozen items from my closet, packed up 2 boxes for the shred day the next time the bank does it, emptied a plastic hanging bin and did another round of papers getting that from 2 boxes down to one.
Oh and I filed away some older bank statements into my filing system which emptied 5 folders and cleared up one corner of my craft table.

Tomorrow DH and I are tackling the warranties. Some of the stuff we no longer have, and some stuff is available online now.

I wish I could be more productive but between DS14's play, DS18's finals, field day, class trip, class night and graduation my free time has been very limited. But I'm already laying the ground work for summer break.

Last month I was handed a great motivator to clean out the stuff in our house - I'm chairing our Boy Scout Troop's yard sale. It's a great fundraiser for the Troop - they make over $1,000 every year. So for the last month I have been accumulating stuff a tiny bit at a time to donate and selling off some of the stuff if I think it had enough value to make it worth my while to post it on craigslist or facebook. Last week my kids were away for April vacation so I took advantage and cleaned out their closet and started filling a box of stuff from their room to donate. Put about 5 or 6 items in the box. The yard sale is a week away and this weekend I drastically picked up the pace. I started cleaning out the drawers under their beds. Well, I now have that box overflowing and have started on a second box. I also have a smaller box of legos (I sold the bulk of them - 30+ lbs - before Christmas) but it's amazing how many accumulated in those drawers. And I have permission to give away all their comic books. Plus with spring finally here I cleaned out their drawers and mine and got several bags of clothes. I can hardly wait for the yard sale. I anticipate having a full truckload of stuff heading out the door and onto their tables.

Do you live near me? Just kidding. I want to learn how to quilt. I am a total newbie, the most I can do is sew on a button. I started watching a few video's on how to quilt, but the video's seem to be for people that know how to quilt. Any suggestions on how to start, or what I should do. I have a ton of material and that is about it.

I've decided that this summer is the attic cleanout. Our Attic is as big as our main living room. And like the living room, it has a vaulted ceiling so it's very filled.

I walked in there today, grabbed a box of Our Generation toys that my DD15 hasn't touched in years and the Beach Cart with the same issue and walked out before I could start freaking out over how filled it is.
I took pictures and listed the items on Craig's List.

I am so dreading opening that door again but next time I go up there will be with a donate box and a garbage box for the stuff on the shelving unit by the door. I think I will tackle from the door area first to give the spiders a chance to run and hide and me a chance to get used to seeing everything piled in there.

It's pretty scary but that stuff needs to go. And with my oldest home from college for the summer, I can grab him to help me.

I FINALLY took boxes to the thrift store today. Turns out that this is my first donation of 2015. :sad2:

I was working some extra hours, which is good for the vacation savings, but not so good for decluttering time. That has slowed down, so I can do a little before vacation, and DH will be home for the summer to help me out after vacation.

We are still planning on getting DS a new bed. It turns out that someone at church has a need for DS's bunk beds, so that is further inspiration to get the bed shopping done.

**ETA: I cleared the empty boxes off of the top bunk frame that DS is no longer using, and our friends picked up the frame and ladder and hardware this evening. One half of the bunk bed is out of the house! :cool1:

Happy decluttering, everyone!

I did a lil decluttering this week
-shredded a stack of receipts
-3 grocery size bags of papers, trash, tags, bags etc
-old shoes
- 2 shoe boxes, curling iron box, food boxes in pantry

Goals to complete by 1st week of June
- go through the boxes of clothes I have stored in the garage. I hope to donate 3 boxes of clothes
- list some clothes and items on Fb page and craigs list

Summer goal
-I have a table in my garage that has boxes of clothes, toys, framed wall pictures etc. I wanted to clear it off and put my foldable table away. Getting rid of the stuff and table will open up space so my garage doesn't look like a hoarder space-lol!

I'm off for the summer so I hope to post weekly goals, otherwise I will be overwhelmed!

And the beach cart is sold and gone! I thought I had someone interested in buying the box of Our Generation Doll Stuff but it turned out she lived in another state and wanted me to hold it for her for a month - nope, no holds allowed. I did tell her I'd ship it to her if she wanted to pay via paypal and pay shipping but she said No.

My son pulled the 3 tubs of camping stuff out of the attic and we will be going through it. We don't camp as a family anymore so I told him he could keep what he wants and that the rest will be sold but that he must take it with him when he leaves home for good.

I also pulled out of the attic 2 lamps and 2 kids boogie boards which are now listed on Craig's List as well as my old aquarium setup. Here's hoping it all sells!

3 bags are on my porch waiting for the VVA to come pick them up! ahhhh.... Now I need to start getting stuff prepared for our garage sale next month. I hope to get rid of a lot of stuff then!

I purged my linen closet today. Tossed a bunch of empty boxes and expired meds.
Only filled a small plastic shopping bag but it looks so much nicer now!

Sold 4 really old wooden chairs.
I had them for $20 a piece, lowered my price 5 hours later to $5.00 a piece and they sold right away.
Just glad to get rid of them. I actually had 8, but my son took 4.
I have a really old dining room table made out of hickory wood and I cannot get rid of it.
I think the legs make the table look old. I am ready to sell it for free, but I know my dh will have a fit.
We actually redid that table when we were in high school together. We both were in wood shop.

sorted my closet again and got rid of 2 things. I feel like I need to get more aggressive with my clothes but I also need to remind myself I have 95% of my summer and winter clothes in one space, so it's not that terrible.
